Just to make one correction, Laura: "Count" is not a term used in the British system of peerage and nobility. That is a continental term and the British equivalent is always an Earl. Ironically, an Earl's wife (and, I imagine, a woman holding the title in her own right) is always a Countess and the rank below is Viscount (and then there is a viscountess).
