Do Cats Understand Hugs and Kisses?

My cat doesn't really like to be hugged. However a couple weeks ago I was really sad because it was the anniversary of my mom's passing. He could tell I was upset so he laid across my chest and rubbed his head against my face and let me hug him. Cats know the value of physical touch and what it means, I have zero doubt.

Sorry for your loss but believe animals do understand. When my Abby died of renal failure I was inconsolable. Shadow, always the more affectionate of the two, spent the entire day and night by my side. When I went to bed to cry, he stayed with me and continued to show extraordinary affection, touch my teary face gently and became a purring machine. He never let me out of his sight for days. Even now he still shows affection, raising his head to my face, purrs, and touches my lips with his nose. He does it all on his own. We both hit the jackpot!

Every cat I've ever had, has loved kisses and hugs. We give them lots of affection from the moment we get them and they end up understanding what it means when we give them kisses and hugs. We usually do it in tandom with the affection they give us (so returning their affection with our version of affection) so they learn to associate kisses and hugs with love and closeness.

Xena doesn’t mind. She lets me rub her belly, pet her ears, touch her paws. She lets me pick her up. She tolerated literally everything without complaining. I can kiss her belly and she just lays there looking at me. She follows me everywhere I go in the house and always stays very close no matter where I am. Got news for this guy. My Shadow adopted me! He waltzed in 10 yrs ago when I opened the back door, found a cat tree he liked and fell asleep! He constantly head bunts me and jumps on the bed to spoon and actually raises his head for kisses! The vet calls him a love junkie, lol. He's 14 but still behaves like a kitten. My cat loves kisses. She learned over time it was a way of showing affection, and she also kisses you back by opening her mouth just a little bit as if shes going to bite you, but doesn't actually bites you, just touches you around the mouth/cheeks and then closes her mouth. Its adorable.

The mouth slight open thing is a way of smelling (or assists smelling-something like that). Sounds like smelling your face & breath is a way to identify you. Could be assessing your health since some cats & dogs can smell illnesses. Any way your cat shows you affection is great. Nice you have a little morning routine.

Yes! I have a cat that does this too. At times she even grabs both sides of my face with her little paws to pull me towards her face and she’ll kiss me on my face and even my mouth. Some may think it’s gross but I don’t. She’s such a huge love bug! And also gives hugs and likes to be cradled like a baby when I’m laying down. I’ve cats all my life and never had one that gives and wants so much affection then her, not to this extent. I wish all my fur children were like this but it’s ok. They all have their own personalities 💕 and love in their own ways.

Same here I can't help it 😺. There's 20 stray cats that roam my neighborhood and I make sure they all get some love from me - pets, kisses, hugs - whatever they're comfortable with 🤗. Cats definitely understand kisses and hugs. How much they like them depends on their personality. I have a cat that is almost 4 years old. We believe someone dumped her here in the desert. She claimed me, and pretty much doesn't like anyone else. When we snuggle, I give her big hugs, and she just pushes into me. She lets me know when she's done. She also pushes into my kisses. We also have a foundling Kitten. She was abandoned by her mommy at 3 weeks. She probably doesn't remember much about the outside, and was bottle fed and coddled. She is now about 4 1/2 months old. She needs sooooo much love, and must be near one of us for most of the day. She nuzzles our necks, and must be right where we can smooch her a lot of the time. She thinks she's a parrot. I have the scratches to prove it. The most needy kitty I have ever owned in 40 years.

Awwww. That's so sweet. My brother found a baby cat at his work's dumpster. I think they left her there because she has a little cleft-like lip? It's just a little part of her lip where sometimes you see a tooth sticking out. Nothing serious of course. But, she's now my cat and she's the most talkative cat and is very affectionate. She's named Meow-Meow for that reason. She's like 4 years old, has had 2-3 litters in the first couple of years? Although, most of her kittens were still-born. Her last litter was 5 kittens. One had no head, another had a crushed head, the other 2 looked fine but they were dead. Only one survived and I named her Bella. Her nickname is Devil Cat since she's a brat. But, she's also very affectionate. And she LOVES when you sing, gets in you face and bunts you purring loudly before kneading. It's super cute.

my cat doesn't liked to be picked up and hugged, oh boy , but if I talk in a very affectionate voice like talking to a baby or child he begins to roll over and comes to me for snuggles, which usually means setting on my chest and me rubbing his head and chin. I recently suffered the loss of my cat Tofu, she was my whole world to me and I have 5 other cats and they were immensely affectionate to me as I was going through that. I was crying for weeks straight and I just felt so broken (I still do but it comes in waves) anyways, every time I'd be crying, my girls (cats) would come to me and purr as loud as they can, they lay and wrap themselves around me and let me bury my face in them as I sobbed and they'd lick me and give me sooo much love. I am terribly sorry for your loss. I have always seen pets as more than just pets... They are members of our family's, and they all get very close to our hearts. I lost one of my two cats a few months back. Skitterz was such a good boy. When he passed away, his brother could feel my pain, and just refused to leave me alone after that day. I remember crying a lot, myself... I still do sometimes. I know that I'm not alone, though. Not with my remaining cat around. Wouldn't you believe that he still acts like a kitten? You have to have a bond with your cat before they accept kisses, but once they do, they will even ask for it. One of my kitties actually wants me to kiss them underneath their chin on the neck. Go figure, the most vulnerable spot on her whole body. I never thought she'd allow me to do that, but she enjoys it even more than I.

Sagwa, Clarice, and Crystal all loved it whenever I hugged and kissed them. The only time Sagwa didn't like it was when she was mad at me, which only happened once. Sadly, Sagwa and her sister Clarice weren't even 2 years old yet when Clarice died. As for Crystal's sister Clover, well Clover enjoyed my kisses, but she wasn't so keen on being hugged. Clover was also mentally disabled, but she still learned to behave around the birds when I told her how much I love her because my mom tried and failed to train her in 2 months whereas I succeeded in just 3 days when my mom gave me 1 week. My mom's usual training methods weren't working on Clover, so I found a way that worked.

Our 22 year old cat Athena (passed in '20) had her voice inflections down to a science to the point of being on this side of speaking human. We always talked to her in human (no meowing). If you socialize a kitten with hugs, kisses, forehead holds, they learn these are expressions of fondness and affection. It helps if these are combined with other normal cat affections such as face rubs, slow blinks, and pets.

Exactly, and even adult cats can learn to associate it as affection vs just being grabbed regardless of their age if their boundaries are respected (and own behaviors mirrored back.) It’s honestly amazing how much mirroring cats will do and how much human verbal and body language they’ll learn to identify (and reciprocate in their own ways) if gently encouraged to do so. Or how cats will pick up other social behaviors and cries from other cats they share a household with-we had a siamese-tabby cat who often caterwauled entire monologues and play cries, and so the manx learned it from him, and so my cat learned play cries from the manx, (and the siamese-tabby might’ve learned at least the play-cry from a cat who passed before we ever got the manx or my cat, and the siamese-tabby has since passed too.) Or, faucet drinking. One cat learned it, taught the next, who taught the next, who taught the siamese-tabby, who taught the manx. (And the first cat in the line might’ve learned it from me since I used to drink that way as a kid if I didn’t feel like cupping my hands.)

ABSOLUTELY!!! I have raised all my kitties pretty similarly of course. They've all turned out to be what we call "puppy cats" & are VERY affectionate! Each one returns my smooches with their own displays of Caring. My sweet cat passed away a few months ago and I always gave her hugs and kissed her on her forehead. I watched this to see if it was something she understood as affection or if she just thought it was weird. When I hugged her, she'd always lean against me and when I gave her kisses she'd rub her face all over my glasses and try to cuddle and roll around on her back. I'm glad she seems to have understood this as an expression of love towards her. I miss her so much.

Cute story- we got our little guy as an abandoned stray at only 4-6 weeks. My husband kissed him on the nose a lot, and now he does it to us all the time. I agree with what you're saying. It was a long time ago, but there was a perve who lived in our neighborhood and liked looking in windows at night. Well, my cat caught sight and scent of him and she let me know someone was at my window. My kitty cat hunched up, and looked up at them at the side of my window and started hissing and growling. She protected me. I called the police and they confirmed someone was there by the dew of footsteps in the grass. She loved protecting me and my mom. I love all my cats I've had over the years.

our kitty is very affectionate, maybe because i hugged him all the time since he was little, so he got used to people arms. he also trusts other people, like people coming over, especially polite children. he actually opens up his belly for them to pet him, which i consider a sign of trust. anyways, he even asks us to carry him and show the house around from the higher perspective lol. we just love him so much, and we are so lucky to have him, truly a blessing

I've had many cats over the last 30yr. They all ask for affection and give me affection in differing ways, from head butts, grooming and leaving their sent on me in multiple ways, throwing themselves on their back as I am walking thru the house and wanting tummy ribs, merping or trilling at me. I have one that gives me a slow blink when I make a kissing motion at him from a cross the room. And of course they sleep next to or on me. I have found cats to be very loving companions.

With each of my cats I have taken the time to let them be comfortable. Even my older cat who seeks out cuddles can push away at time - at that point I put him down on the ground gently. That way he knows he is safe at all times. It also has become a bit of a joke - where I ask for one more kiss. His expression shows he grudgingly allows it knowing I will then put him down. All of this took time and I can see this with my other two cats. The level of trust shown is amazing especially with the one who has not had an easy life.

We got our kitten and he has become my shadow. I've been kissing him on the forehead almost every time I see him, and he now understands the gesture means love. He'll meow at my feet until I bend down, then he'll push his head into my face for a kiss. Definitely the most affectionate cat I've ever had

They eventually learn, over the course of their lifetime, human displays of affection. Eventually they get to love it and actively seek out the attention. I tend to balance my affections, but actively try not to make them feel too smothered. I give them a space so they don't feel bound and restricted. This gives them the feeling that they can leave anytime. I leave them a space in either front of them, or somewhere so that they don't feel completely trapped in my arms. I have earned their trust by doing this. Cats become a very different animal when you are highly aware of their needs too. It's just as important to gently put them down.

My cat isn’t very social and doesn’t like anyone really, but she’s the opposite with me. Whenever I’m around she comes out of her hiding spot and rubs against me, and before I moved rooms she use to wake me up for school which I loved. She still shows me love, whenever I kiss her she always kisses me back and even if I don’t, she kisses me. I absolutely love her, she could tell when I’m having a bad day or not and if I am then she showers me with love. She is my best friend and always will be.

My disabled ( cerebellar hypoplasia) 1.5 year old cat has translated my rapid kisses to nibbles on my nose, chin, or cheeks. His head shakes and he has a hard time controlling his head movements so sometimes the nibbles turn into a chomp but if I say ow ( he didn't get to learn the proper pressure for play from litter mates because of his disability so I had to teach him that with quick ows like his litter mates would have) he tries to back off into a nibble. It's honestly the cutest thing 🥰

I had to gradually teach my kitty, too. She did have other adult cats to play with when I got her, but I don’t think she got to learn those social skills as a kitten. She’s gotten good with respecting “OW!!” from me and recently how to bat without her claws out. The other cat, however, got his fur pulled out until it progressed into near fights and he stopped playing with her entirely. He’s only started again shortly after she learned how to Mitten Bat vs Needle Pricks with me-and to be frank I think what Finally got Gentle Play to click was having kids over regularly. She has NEVER clawed them, but she’s also intentionally careful when interacting with them (and trusts me to keep an eye on things so they don’t crowd her too much.) So, now that she has a Reason to be careful, she’s finally got a better habit when she’s playing with me or the other cat (which, the other cat’s always played fairly gentle, but he’s never been fond of guests or kids, especially as he’s older now.)

Jason was a solid grey cat, before he went I prayed over his soul and spirit that God would preserve him. When I went to put him down at the vet, I wrapped him in a blue blanket. Miraculously this blue blanket showed up out of nowhere as if God provided. The color blue symbolizes a true soul. When I departed I heard two angels speak in my head, "We got him!" I knew then he was going to Heaven to be with God.

My Abby did the same at the vet office when she was about to cross the Rainbow Bridge (renal failure). With tears, I told her I loved her. She reached out and gently tapped my hand and licked it. She was saying goodbye and thank you. Still makes me cry.

One of my cats learned what a kiss was and has started kissing me back while he's purring. It took me a while to realize he was mimicking me, but he definitely knows that it's a sign of affection. He even started letting me hug him. But I've also always let him go when I'd try to hug him and he'd struggle. At the first sign he wanted away I'd let him away. This let him start to trust that I wasn't going to trap him, and he's a very willing hug partner now. I even have to physically pull him off of his hug when I'm done.

My cat loves when I kiss her, she often leans into them 🥺 also I usually will go find her wherever she is in the house to check on her, and when she notices me coming to cuddle her she almost always perks up and starts purring. We both check in on eachother throughout the day and always have lots of snuggles. My 13 year old cat gives me "kisses" by headbutting me in the face. She's much more gentle now but when she was younger she would hurt my nose by headbutting too hard. If I make a kissy noise at her she will literally tilt her head toward me for a kiss. She absolutely understands it as affectionate and reciprocates in her own way

My little foundling kitty, January, has many ways of expressing his affection for me. He does the head bunting, the rubbing up against my legs, he presses his nose into my nose while purring loudly and we do the slow eye-blinking communication, too. We also have a range of interactive games which we play together. He "tells" me which games he wants to play by finding the proper toy for it and bringing it to me. I have enjoyed the company of numerous friendly cats before but January is especially lovey-dovey. He's a furry little love sponge with a strong reciprocal response. I am so glad he found me. The feeling appears to be quite mutual.

My little girl cat seemed to be accepting of hugs and kisses since she was a kitten. Of course she has her boundaries but she is generally okay with it. My little boy was not the same. It has taken a few years for him to warm up to hugs and kisses and now he loves it. He even jumps up on the table to put his paws up to hug my neck and rub his face on mine for kisses and to be picked up and hugged.

Really depends on the cat and on how much time they have had to learn your behaviors - how they feel about the different ways you interact will change with time. The key is to keep everything a positive experience - never let them dislike something so much that they feel the need to get away. Start little and build up slowly over time.

We adopted our beautiful cat Fluffy from a cat rescue centre just over a year ago. We all fell in love with her immediately and I especially couldnt stop myself from kissing her on the forehead. Shes an extremely gentle cat and never lashes out at you, so if I remember correctly, she just turned her head away from me at first. As we became more and more acquainted she became used to them and now doesnt bat an eyelid. She is very attached to me now, and I am very attached to her. I think she feels the love and realises its a gesture of affection. I always thought that cats touched noses to show affection. Both my present cat and my previous cat do and did this. In fact if I say to her 'kiss fluffy' if she is on my level like on a table she will come and give me a nose to nose, which is what I call a cat kiss. Could this be what a cat kiss is?

My cats love hugs, belly rubs, toe massages ( esp back paws,they spread their toes wide) Bagabones sleeps in my arms all night, he ticks his face completely into my right hand and if scared by a storm he goes in the hall and I get behind him and lay over him with my arms wrapped around him nice and tight, he stops shaking and calms down enough to go into meatloaf position. Both my indoor boys love being upside down either in my arm when I'm reading or on my legs, my outdoor/indoor boy loves when I pick him up out him in my lap and wrap my arms around him, he holds whichever arm is between his front paws scratching his chin and he really loved right snuggle hugs , he climbs in my lap for them. Hutch rescue and every day from kitten to death gets a full massage and grooming . This includes looking in ears, in mouth, and touching them everywhere. If this is done from first day you'll never have problems If they need medical care, I trim all of their nails weekly ( except Sgt he goes puttside) and pulling is easy, instead of shoving it down their throats all three love lying upside down on my lap, feet towards e, head at my knees, it's very easy to can usually drop a pill into their mouth, most of the time they don't even realise what it is. I clean their teeth monthly, all allow it. It's all about training and trust.

My cat LOVES hugs. He will literally come up to me and reach up for me to pick him up and hug and pet him. He wraps his front arms around my neck and sorta lays his head on my neck/shoulder. It is the most adorable thing I've EVER seen. My cat is the opposite of most cats and it's crazy to me. I've never actually liked cats but he was in desperate need of help and I had the means to help him so I took him in. It was supposed to be temporary... lol. 3 years later and he's still my best friend. I NEVER imagined I'd love him as much as I do and that he and I would be as close as we are. He is basically my shadow... I have whole conversations with him about my day. Lol. It's actually pretty awesome. I'm a big burly 31 year old man who has to give his cats hugs every day and has conversations with him like he's a human. Lol.

I think they recognize the affection for what it is as long as it's not aggressive or violating their personal space/physical freedom of movement (ie., don't kiss too hard or crowd them or pet too intensely--over stimulation aggression)

I love cats and their body language is so interesting. I try not to force human affection on animals unless I’m told they enjoy it. I’ve met plenty of cats who don’t like being picked up or kissed and the people around them do it anyway, so I try to communicate by mimicking their body language to make them comfortable. This has worked wonders around cats I’ve met that are wary of new people. My friend’s cat is extremely skittish and, unless you live in the house, he won’t leave his favorite closet until the new person leaves. I stayed a little over a week at my friend’s and by respecting her cat’s space, getting on his level, mimicking passive non-threatening body language, and giving him time, he was rubbing against my leg, letting me cuddle him, and I’d find him waiting outside the bathroom door for me when I’d take a shower before the end of the first week. It really does help to meet them in their comfort zone sometimes.

I lost my baby back in December, not even two years old. She meant the world to me. She understood what my kisses meant and would even push herself up onto her back paws to meet me. I miss feeling that loved. I'm getting a kitten through a friend this Saturday and intend to slowly teach her that kisses and being held, if/when she is willing, are both good things. Its all about the upbringing, I see people that had their cats from kittens and they get the crap scratched out of them for looking at the cat the wrong way, meanwhile my cats demand I cuddle with them and drape themselves over me. If my cat has a bad dream they demand I hug them until they can start purring again. Its all about upbringing and making sure they know what you are doing.

When I got my kitty a few months ago I didn’t force him to be in one room and acclimate. I just let him hide under the couch, lay down on the floor next to him, and show blinked at him until he fell asleep. Within that night he had already fallen asleep on my chest and let me rub his little belly. Now he purrs in his sleep when he’s touching me and weaves around my legs even when he’s not hungry just looking for affection. He prefers being cradled. I’ve never had a cat with this kind of bond, even though I’ve been very very close with other cats. My wonderful 18 year old boy died on halloween and he would sleep in my bed every night, greet me when I came home, and miss me when I was gone, but we grew up together and I feel like he and I were close companions and I’m my new kitten’s mom in some ways.

My older cat is timid in personality but otherwise affectionate to most of the family in my household - especially me since I’ve been the one to look after her adter we adopted her. She likes to lick my hand and purr loudly everytime I reach down to pat her while she’s just chilling. My younger cat is a bit of the opposite - he doesn’t express it much but he still likes cuddles and getting attention - he’s more playful since he’s still a bit young (is a little over a year now i believe). The two also like being carried in different ways. My older cat loves being craddled and will pretty much refuse any other way of being carried - that’s probably my doing since I kept craddling her when she was younger. Meanwhile, my younger cat prefers being shoulder-carried. In terms of interacting together - my older has grown to “tolerate” him, reason being he keeps tackling and chomping her, although now she’s gotten better at anticipating his attack and will just run away if she’s successful. Pretty much an older sister with her annoying younger brother dynamic going on lol.
