Do Fish Still Bite When Its COLD? Bank Fishing Open Water In Winter

Do fish still bite when it cold? Can you catch fish bank fishing in open water, in Winter? Yes and Yes! Fish are cold, but they still need to eat. I typically resort to live bait like red worms when the fishing is difficult, like it is right now. But the fish are STILL biting! Despite freezing my hands off, I was able to catch a variety of average bluegill in a short amount of time. And, I caught all of the fish on just one worm! I know bank fishing when its cold isn't for everyone. But if you wanted to try it, you can still catch fish in open water! #realistic #fishing

My local ponds are icing over, and options are getting scarce. Good thing I got an ice fishing pole for Christmas last year. I had to improvise recently when I didn't think there was going to be ice, and there was, but now the ice fishing rod goes with me everywhere. The biggest challenge is feeling that super subtle bite in these cold temps. You caught some small bluegill this go-round, but that's just fine. Any day with a tight line is a good day.

Nice job Alex. I fished today at Dead Horse Ranch State Park here in Arizona. Probably not as cold as where you are. I ended up with 12 trout in about 2 hours of fishing. They were cooperating.

This is what being born with the angling gene does. All weather is fishing weather. Good number of fish in those temps but nothing worse than cold hands. You kept it realistic Alex....good man.

EEP! its coming! sub zero in NW Arkansas! Polar Vortex gunna get mean! gunna sea how my sable minor and new young needle palms I planted this spring hold up. Gardening and fishing are both gambles depending on the species you try for.. as for fishing bluegill has always had my love! No matter the hard times a bluegill is your best bet if you really need to catch at least one fish. Especially if you have red worms! and if they are not even biting red worms you still have one other option.. a cold. Catching a cold while fishing counts the skunk out right? you caught something at least..

Winter time is the absolute worst for fishing. I've just never had a ton of luck outside of an occasional slab crappie. It's just hard when fish aren't very active and you have to stand out in the cold. Congrats on braving the cold and coming away with some bluegills because getting skunk'd in this weather is as demoralizing as it gets.

I got a pair of some fingerless gloves from Wally world. They have a little flappy bit that covers your finger tips and folds back out of the way so you can mess with your hook and what not. They were pretty cheap and the magnet sucks, but they work pretty good.

You need some gloves! Even if you just put them on for a few minutes between casts. I went out on Jan 5th in 36 degrees, I really wanted to try this new spot I scoped out on the river. I caught 12 rock bass in 2 hours, many of them half pounders. I broke my pb twice, ending with a 0.63lber. Road runner and bobby garland crappie plastic. One of my best fishing days in any kind of weather. Fish on!
