dear 老外. 外 also means distant. in the content of 外婆, it actually means grandma that lives in distant. traditionally, women are married far away from their home, even in the case of nearby, the wife usually lives and joins with the husbands family. when the child is born, the grandparents from mother's side will be in distant. that is how the name implies, about distance not "foreign". 外公外婆 (grandparents)are definitely part of the family and 親人.

yeah, it is something to do with our inheritage system, 父传子家天下,the asset and the name will only inherited to sons, especially for the empire Kings. That is why we call Kings' wive family as 外戚,also, means they are out of the range of the King's power's candidates' list, in other words, they are away from the power. So, in a word, 外 was not only for foreign, and in fact, foreigners, being used as a term, 外国人,was coming out very late and recent

My question : Why do you call you "second cousin, second cousin". Is he or she the second cousin that you know of, after the first? Try answering that and you will know how silly it is to ask a 5000 years old civilization to change they linguistic definition.

The words "grandmother" 外婆and "grandfather" 外公do not mean discrimination, they are just to distinguish the mother's family from the father's family. We eat fish with bones because basically all the fish we produce in China are of this kind. Ancient China was a land-based country, and the bones of animals were also very nutritious for our growth(we Chinese think so). The heating systems in the north and south of China are different. The north is the hot air system暖气,炕kàng and the south is the stove 火炉. China's diverse ingredients and cooking practices originate from China's unified multi-ethnic regional culture and hard-working Chinese people.😊

This is another part of the sophistication of Chinese language. It generally goes with this: the more primitive a language is, the less clearness in defining those kind of things such as grandparents from father side or mother side. In Chinese, you can know exactly those difference. In some African countries such as Guinea, it's very difficult to figure out even some simple relationship between people of the same family.
@timmychan6282

You are not completely correct about 外婆. 婆婆 means the grandmother that lives with the family, while 外婆 means the grandmother who lives outside of the house, therefore "外". Then 外婆 later got attached to the meaning of the mother of a mother.

Why leave the bone in the chicken is a good question. It’s because it taste better. It’s similar to steak or pork chop with bones. The meat adjacent to the bone is tender and juicy. A chicken is best when slow cook whole to well done or 90%. Fish is a different matter, a lot of them are river fish that are small and boney. The bones cannot be removed before cooking. But think of all the things you can do practicing your tongue skills. Go get some Chinese kisses and find out.

"Mian Zhe" means face. To give someone "means zhe" basically means to give consideration to others, to have empathy for others. "Foreign grandparents" refers to grandparents on mothers side. Westerners literarily translated directly from Chinese. There are many Chinese expressions the meaning of which just can't be translated literally. To "beat down someone " means to defeat someone. Not to physically beat up someone. Foreigners shouldn't try to translate Chinese expressions without proper knowledge. If the translation makes no sense, it's because the foreigner did it wrong!

Personally I don't like the term "Foreign Grandma" either, this is mostly used in the southern part of China. I much prefer the term being called in the northern part, "Lao Lao" & "Lao Ye". Grandparents from different sides don't have to share the same addressing to establish equality. Matter of facts, all relatives are being categorized with much more precision and details than in the west. However, the word foreign does sound like it's bit more distant, more dividing, and less involving...Even when "foreign" might not be the true explanation of the name, but the chance of it being misunderstood is just not worth it. I think the root cause of this word, is the fact that females were once considered to "distant" to her birth family after marriage. Similar as explicitly changing family names in the west, Chinese women, in the past days, were predominantly regarded as member of her husband's family after marriage. To put it simply, she would become a leaf node in the family tree of her birth parents., and her bloodline continues only in her husband's genealogy archive. Things definitely change, and daughters are being cherished no less than the boys these days. As for me, I think these terms can be changed too, but people are just getting so used to it, to the point that they don't double think about the word as "adjective + noun". Most just treated it like a fixed term and that's it.

The「外」in「外婆」means “outside”, NOT “foreign”. In a paternalistic concept, “maternal” - as in “maternal grandmother” - is indeed considered「外」- it does NOT imply any farther distance than a “paternal” grandmother, but is to specify the relationship in subject. The American woman here, sounding critical, is obviously stereotypically ignorant and arrogant.

I just like to reiterate here that Chinese prefer to have the meat with the bones intact because of taste and nutrition. Many people here have answered this question. Actually, on the other hand, Chinese usually ask why do Westerners remove all the bones in something which Westerners think is the obvious thing to do. Imagine your fried chicken wings without the bones. Sometimes, Chinese debone the meat but you still have the flavors of the bones. 其实中国人吃的比西方人还要有讲究的多了,比如中国人用筷子就是最好的一件事了!

Food culture is part of the civilization of a country. China has about 5 K yrs of history therefore her food culture must be sophisticated as well, its ways of cooking and way of grabbing food and eating. Chopsticks must have been used long long time ago. It reflects what kind of food they eat and how they think about grabbing food sending into mouth. If you eat hotpot you definitely cannot use your bare hands to grab food and fork or spoon won't work well either. Just looking at how many different cooking styles and dishes on Chinese tables you can have a pretty good idea about this country's civilization level in a historical perspective.

Bones add sweetness and more umami to the dish when cooked together. Actually It isn't that hard to eat fish with bones. There are ways of removing the meat from the main spine so that only few of the bones would detach. The positives of eating fish with some bones still in it, is that whilst you will have to eat it on its own (to avoid choking on a bone), it allows you to better savour and appreciate the delicate sweetness of its flesh. In many parts of the world, people would cook meat with bones in them. Most Western countries have everything filleted and sanitised for them into a headless, boneless nondescript piece of meat.

It's very interesting to investigate the emerged feelings. I somehow get annoyed by the questions of some of them and feel comfort with some other opinions. As I start to realize, many times we may think those are very "stupid" questions, but since we never thought about it we never asked why about it, that's why people get annoyed, because we don't know how to answer. But I also have to say that, being sensitive to sarcasm and with China that has been criticized unfairly for so many years by the western mainstream media, maybe the sensitivity towards the sarcasm comes exactly from there. It's what stops me from a conversation where maybe I was ready to reveal lots of different points of view and insights. I think everyone would feel the same in a similar circumstance. Maybe at the end it's not really because of the question but has to do with a certain kind of attitude. Still navigating into it..

Foreign is call different ... Country Human . Grandma have 2 each is father 's mother and mother 's mother . In China father's mother is call Grandma but Mother's Mother has another name for 区分 different Mother . And China has a man Rights of Culture Country that Father is main of family . So Mother's Mother has another name but it is not call Foreign ! 此外不是彼外。So if father is main = first , mother is second . So 外婆 is Second Grandma .

As an expat myself let me predict this, most of that people at some point will return to their home country. Why? This is my answer based in my experience: when you go to live abroad, you can go either as a turist or as an immigrant. Turists never really mentally leave their country of origin, they learn the basic customs but they don't integrate, that's why they are puzzled about different customs. Tourists can live in a country for years, even decades, but they always be turists. If you seriously go to a country be an immigrant and integrate, don't be a turist.
