The science in this video is awesome Rachel! I'm loving it. Lose Electrons Oxidation, Conductive VS Convective heating, Limiting reagents...

This was very handy. I knew none of this information about heat packs. Not that I ship fish, but, should I order online, this will give me another yardstick to evaluate the seller by.

Great video Rachel! Very informative to us who aren't on the trade side of things. Cutting towards yourself with that knife gave me flashbacks, I've got the scar of my arm from the very last time I ever did that!

I guess that kind of explains the order of daphnia from Florida this spring got cooked. When I opened the box I could feel the heat and that's not a good sign. I got a thermometer and the temp was 110.3!! Of the 1200 daphnia less than 5 were living and 3 of those died. With 2 I raised a colony, oh and I definitely got a refund! That's why I try to give as much feedback to shippers when I get orders. I'm don't look for anything but I feel it helps shippers evaluate their methods. I think my last order from Rachel came in at 71.2* for less than 24 hour ship. Not bad at all!!!

hey Rachel I was wondering if you added a heat pack due to your current weather conditions what would happen if the temperature in the area you shipped to was significantly higher? Wouldn't this cook the fish/plants?
@RachelOLeary8 жыл бұрын
+Kala C I have 1030 am delivery time to most areas, so it's generally ok as long as overnights are not super warm. It's a difficult decision sometime es, and often comes down to what species, and what route the package is expected to go. If I am worried, I will use an oversized box and extra packing materiald

Hi Rachel, I shipped several boxes this Monday. Paid for 2 day delivery. One of the packages says Estimated delivery on Thursday and another says Friday. I should not have shipped on Cyber Monday I guess but I dropped off first thing in AM like usual so figured would beat the rush. Did not use heat packs as it is still in 60's and 70's where I am shipping to. What do you think chance of survival for an extra day or two in the box will be? I box up very carefully using Styrofoam liner and the shredded insulation from Lowe's.
Does shipping by air always mean a heat pack is needed? Does that relegate cold packs to ground transport at warmer times of the year? It seems like the overall transport experience is likely to have both hot and cold spells and in-between. How does one prioritize?
@RachelOLeary7 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think cold packs really work well, at all, and rarely use them. Heat packs are not ALWAYS required, but have a more predictable heating curve so are reliable to use, with some research
@FishBehindGlass8 жыл бұрын
Very interesting video. How did you learn all this. I know you said it's trial and error, but did you find these things out on the fly? Did you ask someone who did this already, or through research? I can picture you being the kind of person doing heat pad experiments with different boxes around the house too.
@RachelOLeary8 жыл бұрын
I did a LOT of research and DID have boxes sitting around both in my fishroom and out on my porch before I started shipping in winter. I used empty bags of water and would test the temp with a heat gun.
