I think the speed of sound through the liquid also affects the pitch, resulting in a higher pitch for hot liquids where sound travels faster. What I want to know is why the pitch continued to rise while the water was being poured for the hot water, while it descended as the cold water was poured. I would intuitively think that both should descend since the size of the resonator (i.e. the water level) is increasing, which should give a longer wavelength and, in turn, a lower pitch.

In the bottom of the cup, the airborne droplets of hot water are baffled by the walls of the cup, but as the water level rises, the sound spreads out laterally, making it easier to hear. (Did that sound convincing?)

Alucard They mainly drink coffee so I'm guessing they're american, and kettles aren't really popular there. People don't usually drink tea and have coffee machines for coffee so kettles aren't really needed.

See, she said the hot water is higher pitched but I thought hot water was lower pitched and picked the first one because I thought it was lower. Hot water sounds heavier, deeper.

It must be so ingrained, I've never given it a moment's thought*. I said 'hot' before the first playback of cold, then thought, 'Ooh, I should have waited for the next one', but it just confirmed that I'd made the correct decision. *It might also be that I'm incurious.

When I turn on my shower it runs cold until the hot water arrives through the pipes. I can tell when it is hot because the pitch of the water falling onto the shower tray changes.

thisdamnthingy Their tone was no less aggressive than your sarcastic comment about the future of this show. QI has always had extremely silly facts and jokes, mixed with serious things. In fact, so far I would say these episodes have been less silly/inconsequential than Stephen's standard. if you only watch the show casually, then why on earth would you think you know anything about how the show is going to last? You clearly don't actually watch full episodes.
