Can you please tell me if when adding up your receipts do you total it before or after sales tax? I really appreciate how generous you are with your time and knowledge. I know I have told you that many times but I really do!!

Thanks Sandy! You would take the total after adding in the sales tax, that just becomes your overall cost or deduction.

The 1099s have the price with the sales tax on them already. So you just use that for the gross amount to give to your accountant and then just give them a list of business expenses including what you paid for the items you sold, right?

great video. So...the names of the product does not equate to that being the business. Also the name of a website does not equate to it being a business. Unless the names of the products/website is used on invoicing, or to enforce contractual obligations then it would be a dba scenario for the llc?

How do you sign contracts with DBA as a sole proprietor? Do you always put your name first, then add dba name next?

Okay so if I fill out a W-9 as an online content creator and I put my real name on line 1...but I never disclose my real name to public who pay to subscribe to me... do I need a DBA? My social media handle for the paid subscription is something I just made up to be anonymous. IRS of course will be given my real name and ssn on the w-9. I’m just trying to figure out if I need a dba in a state where sole-proprietors are suppose to get one if you use a fictitious name and if i need to supply that on line 2 of the W-9.

Hi there! I have been looking all over the place trying to figure out the purpose of DBAs and whether I need one. I’m just a sole prop with a small ETSY shop that uses a name that is different from my legal name. So as long as my banking documents and whatnot are still using my own legal name, I don’t need to register my Etsy shop name as a DBA?

can you do a video on bookkeeping? ive looked at quick books but it didnt seem what I needed. I know I can do it in google sheets and its been the best way. I just would like a better way for taxes and all that. QB didnt seem to do what I wanted. I just want Item cost, Sold and profit. Id like to be track automatically because manilly takes forever. Maybe manually is the best way.

My LLC is under the name I'd like to keep on all my documents and show to all my customers however under this name I am doing multiple unrelated things such as candles, board games and etc but again, all under one name. Though each product itself will have a name I want to sell everything under the scope of my LLC name. Someone please tell me if this sounds like a situation that requires a DBA?

I wouldn't say it requires a DBA, unless you actually want to do business as a different name. Having a product or a brand with a different name does not require a DBA typically if you still show the LLC name on the official documents.

So, if I’m an independent insurance agent, and my website /business cards have a “business name” just for marketing and establishing some credibility, but I am doing all transactions in my own name, sign contracts, receive payments, as just my name, I don’t need a DBA? I can legally just use my “business name” as a cute little brand identity kind of thing?

So when I registered my business with the irs I put a dba because I wanted to name my reseller business on eBay something else other than my name, I’ve heard u must pay to use a fictitious name for tax purposes so u won’t claim another company name on accident is that true?

I get what you are saying about the DBA.....kinda. Did you get a DBA for Tew Financial LLC, since your name is Mark Tew, not Tew Financial or is the Tew enough to not need a DBA since that is your last name. But, then I thought I also heard if you have the same name on your LLC, bank account, and tax ID, then you don’t need a DBA even if it isn’t your name. I’m sorry. I found it confusing.

I did not get a DBA because I already "do business" in my official company name, meaning that's the name on my invoices, contracts, bank account, etc. I would only need a DBA if I wanted to use a name other than my official company name on those documents.

Correct, that's because you are a sole proprietorship by default. No need to form a sole proprietorship with the state as you would an LLC.

Two totally separate things. The DBA just gives you the right to operate under another name. The reseller exemption is the ability to purchase inventory for resale without paying sales tax.

You can use your SSN, an EIN is optional for sole proprietors

I got an EIN to not mix business with personal. It’s also free to get an EIN don’t fall into paying like $200 for one it takes less than 30min to set it up.
