Really 32gigs of ddr4 3200 to 3600 is pretty much all you need even for 4k video editing. If you were working with large database files 64 or 128 would be to your benefit but that is a very small fraction of a percent of industry users. You do need to know how to set your RAM speedt in BIOS too, as for a given CPU the BIOS defaults will be 2166 or 2666 typically independent of the speed stated on the kit. Given that none of the advancements from 22nm to 7nm for AMD allowed for stable repeatable faster speeds than the 3200 or 3600 kits, and going to pre-10nm 14+ 10nm circuitry for Intel only just this year got them to 3200 native speed realistically the technology is at a stall. Yes if you were doing advanced animations, AI or other data intensive work you may need more RAM but you'd really be better off using a render server at that point and then you are using a CPU type that is slower than desktop and uses slower memory so again no benefits there. Sure the up and coming DDR5 may save you a watt or two, then you get your hands on an RTX 30xx card and you wont notice that power savings and there are no CPU's out now, and not likely to be any CPU's out any time soon, that will be able to do more speed than what is already done. Not unless, of course, AMD's next gen Ryzen pulls a rabbit out of the hat, wouldn't put it past Lisa to do so :)

Ensuring your mobo is running ram in dual channel or better is a huge improvement.. I had 16g running in dual channel, added another single stick of matching 8g ram totalling 24g.. mobo switched to single channel mode and everything felt more sluggish than 16g in dual.. not sure if something like this is already in the comments but hope it helps..
@ArtisChronicles
@ArtisChronicles 2 жыл бұрын
that exact issue is why I added another 16GB in same timing ram from a second kit. still retained dual channel and got extra capacity. I also did this with an older system, but it was a second 8GB kit to total 16GB. both systems retained dual channel as a result of this. so all 4 slots are populated on both boards with basically the same timings across all the ram. sometimes you can mix brands if the timings are close enough as well, I just personally don't do it if I can avoid it since all my ram instabilities came from mixing ram.

@@stalbaum Absolutely; vast majority of people don't need fast RAM or NVME. I game and I got a 2TB NVME because it happened to be cheaper than an SSD, but there's no discernable difference in load times for games, (like maybe a second or two faster). My friend however is a music artist so when he's rendering, editing, and saving massive raw audio files or editing videos he can actualtually take advantage of the RAM and NVME. He'll also utilize RAM because he'll be using multiple programs.

With my setup, Rog Maximus Extreme MB and Corsair Dominator DD5 ram I can run 32GB (16GB x2) at 6200MHZ or 64GB (16Gb x4) at 5400MHZ and they perform the same in benchmarks and in games at 4K. It might be different at lower resolutions but not 4k atleast for me. I ended up keeping mine setup at 64GB as DCS has some servers and maps that have went over 32GB of ram usage. The ram was two sets of Corsair 32GB 6200mhz kits I tried together and not as stock 64GB matched kit set so it was not ideal but works fine with manual setup. So things may be different with DDR5 as for now but the advice is spot on when it came to my older DDR4 rigs.

If you mix rams with different speed would it affect the cpu's speed for example limiting the overclocking
@kingston
@kingston 3 жыл бұрын
The BIOS and motherboard determines the speed and timings the memory will run at. If you mix two different memory modules the memory will normally run at the lower speed of the memory that is installed. Ideally Its recommended installing a matching memory kit to avoid performance issues.

It would be nice if you would get into Rank and Configurations as this can be confusing. Specifically, what are the differences, advantages or disadvantages of them? Examples: 1Rx8 vs. 1Rx16 or 1Rx8 vs. 2Rx8 or 1Rx16 vs. 2Rx8 ? This can also be hard to determine as the sellers often don't reveal this data.
@NFNERF
@NFNERF 3 жыл бұрын
LTT had a great shotgun analogy where 1Rx8 would be a single barreled shotgun with 8 pellets in each bullet. The RAM ‘shoots’ this at the CPU, where it is used, and then the RAM has to reload. Expanding on that, 2Rx8 would be like a double barreled shotgun with 8 pellets. This ‘double barrel’ lets the RAM shoot more bullets before reloading. The difference would be of latency, but this is off the top of my head so don’t take my word for it.

I like the analogy of the info highway with each Channel having lanes depending on the type of ram since every cycle on the clock there is a performance grade that doubled ddr-2 to 3, doubles, ddr3 to 4 it doubles again. 1,2,4, with each new generation we double the ability to transport data to and from the ram.

This actually answered almost every question I’ve been having. I built a new PC two years ago with an ASUS ROG Maximus Hero XII. The sticker says it’s rated for RAM up to 4800+ I currently have some 3200 sticks and am wondering if I screwed up not getting 3600 or higher. When I look at a lot of 3600 ram, it says it’s for AMD. Also, when multiply the clock rates by the latency numbers, 3200 appears identical to 3600 on some vendors. Super confusing. I’m tempted to just swap for 3600 and benchmark both.

What's the real difference between MHz and MT/s and is there a conversion rate?
@kingston
@kingston Жыл бұрын
Thats a good question. Megahertz (MHz), which historically used to describe the frequency/data rate of the memory module, was a standard metric for million cycles per second. Megatransfers (MT/s) is now the correct term used to describe the data rate (speed) of all DDR memory modules, which transfer data at twice the frequency. But most people will not care about this. You would need to be doing intensive tasks to be needing this info. My customers are given the whole truth about RAM. I just bought 3600mhz speed DDR4 ram but I use the speed intensively processing videos at 4-5K very regularly. The Speed of the RAM is felt more during multitasking but how much is it really noticeable unless we are constantly using a stopwatch? If we need to constantly have background applications running, we are using applications like Adobe Premiere or any production apps, then this video would be the very best. I acknowledge that her explanations are very easy so far to understand. I would like it if someone would run two PCs with the same configuration side-by-side and run an app that allocates RAM like Adobe CC or 1-2 VMs and then show the differences in performance. It might be necessary to take ram that is even slower and cheaper because the contrast is easier to recognize. Too many will buy RAM and say to themselves that they can put less money toward the RAM as it is less important than let’s say, a larger SSD. After studying Core 1&2 A+, I now say, if I want to see better production results, then get great quality RAM and Kingston is pretty decent as a brand. It is easier to upgrade RAM later vs spending hours on upgrading SSD or NVMe later down the Road.

No matter how fast the ram you purchased it will go down to 2400mhz if you get 4 slots populated on a non “k” processor, so latency and size are more important if you just want 128gb ram size and performance at the same time but don’t want to spend extra bucks on “k” processor. My ram speed is 2400 and cycle latency is 9-11-11-25 and processor is 11400f

When assessing your memory needs, consider three things: the minimum memory capacity requirements of your operating system, the motherboard channel architecture requirements and the memory demands of the applications you typically use. Check with your system's manufacturer and the programs you primarily use for recommendations. If you need further assistance please visit us here: kings.tn/3TxkGlz Thank you.

You can buy half tb sticks of server ram now. I’ve read of 1 tb sticks but I have never seen them in the wild, not for sale, and not even anywhere claiming they have no stock. It’s supposed to exist but you can’t buy it. Kind of like gen4 optane. It’s supposed to exist, it’s supposed to be the best fastest storage around, but it simply doesn’t exist anywhere for sale. I bet it’s all bought up by massive conglomerates like Facebook and KZbin. Technically they are the only people on earth that could actually use it and get any use from it.

@Lock Unknown its not really overclocking when the latency increases too. Your RAM is running slower than not "overclocking" the XMP. Also look at your ratio your probably running in the 2:1 ratio instead of 1:1.

So you talked about latency, but never went into what the 4 numbers mean. If low latency is better than higher, why is there so much stuff with higher numbers out there? Is there an average range or window of latency recommend for say gaming VS rendering, VS database stuff? Thats like saying some vehicles have 4 lug nuts, others have 5, and some bigger ones have 8 to 12 or more.... OK.. And?
