Though I'm not studying fashion, I'm an NYC art school student who has many friends studying fashion design. I understand how difficult it can be. A very dear friend of mine is like you, not having any sewing or draping experience when she started. The amount of stress she had to go through. Around finals. she would sob her eyes out in my dorm room while I was trying to shove cups of tea down her throat to get her to calm down - every single semester. She barely made it out of there with her degree. Artistic degree programs are so stressful and because most people assume that "Oh, you're doing what you love all day! That's not tough at all", our complaints get silenced. It's very stressful!!! Getting critiqued every class is degrading. Being poked at for our skill level is degrading. Art school can be a very degrading experience for many. However, like you said, art school is one of the best experiences I've ever had. I've never worked harder in my life and, despite the stress I am feeling, I am making things I am so proud of. I'm so excited to finish my degree and get out in the world! I completely understand why you dropped out! I'm glad you're out of there.

It must annoy real fashion designers when some talentless celebs like Victoria Beckham pay promoters to promote them as a fashion designer, when they never spend a day working in or studying the subject, and their designs aren't anything special.

This is my first comment ever XD I can’t wait to get in Bunka next month! It was my dream to study in Bunka ever since I was in kindergarten 😭🙏🏻 I’m actually half Japanese but I studied overseas and never studied proper Japanese. I had to take normal exam for Japanese student but good thing I passed...phew Had an interview too and I brought my portfolio which was the clothes that I made since I was in primary school. The price for Bunka really shocked me but I’m really thankful for my parents to be able to get me there 😭🙏🏻✨ Im also taking 服装科 too and thanks to your videos I got to know what to look forward to and keep in mind Thank you so much and stay healthy ❤️😭✨

just wanted to update this comment. its been 2 days of studying in Bunka. Since its corona we have online classes but we still have to go to school for 3 to 4times a week. And I think the teacher in charge of my class is the same teacher you're talking about 😂😂😂 her voice was so similar to the ones in your videos. I got really tired after coming back from class cuz I live kinda far and I took the wrong bus the other day and had to walk home😭😭😭 I literally died in my bed after that 😂

It’s ok to drop out, especially if it has just a negative impact on your mental health. I graduated with a ba art degree & post baccalaureate license in a field I believed I would work in the rest of my life. I found out through experiences working in the field, I hated it so much. It was nothing like I had imagined, learning & experiencing are 2 different things. It was soo stressful & severally damaged my own mental health & self view. I only escaped the field w/the pandemic. The pandemic got me laid off which was a blessing in disguise bc I fully believed I was going to have a heart attack in that field. Now a year later im picking up the pieces trying to figure out life from now on. It’s ok to make mistakes, it’s ok to drop out of school. Just make sure whatever you are doing, be this myself, a fellow commentator, or mikan, make sure whatever you do is best for yourself & your health. Don’t force yourself to do something simply bc you have a degree in it or think it’s the only option. There is always something else out there & who knows you can love more than what you do now

i go to a european fashion school and online teaching really is an absolute nightmare... you just can't properly teach fashion online, especially in such a limited timeframe. too many physical things, from sewing to drawing and more. with how strict bunka is it must even be worse there, i'm really glad you managed to avoid going through that 😅 and to anyone considering to study fashion, be it bunka or other schools, i recommend you wait until the pandemic is over. it would be a huge waste of money and effort otherwise 💔

Mikan not sure if you'll receive this message but i've struggled with depression and other mental things as well, and i found out i was fructose intolerant. Fruit sugars and soda sugars turn my mental state upside down. There's some other intolerances that can cause depression as well, please check if you got any intolerances this might help! If any of you can upvote this so she can see this that'd be most appreciated, this is something i have struggled with for my entire life and didn't figure out until this year.

I'm so glad you chose your health over another stressful year. I dropped out of my A levels (many years ago) because I realised I had poorly chosen my subjects and they had nothing to do with what I wanted to do career wise. My parents were very supportive with my decision which helped. You have to do what's right for you because it's your life and you only get one!

Right now I’m in a fashion school, and I totally relate. The only difference though, this is only high school for me and not college, and I’m only in first year and there’s still 5 years left, but I’m already so exhausted lmao. And for some reason I hate whatever I make ,and I constantly compare myself to my better classmates, which makes me so anxious and sad all the time. And yeah I had no previous experience with anything fashion or art related either, but some of my teachers expect me to know the basics. And on top of all this shit, I have like math and 3 different types of history and a fuckton of other subjects, and I don’t know how am I gonna make it through this when I’m already so exhausted. My mental health is at an all time low as well, and I don’t really have any friends I talk to , but dropping out is not an option, because this is only high school. So yeah I just try to suck it up, and Ive lately been skipping school a few times, but ye it’s hard af tho even in highschool 🙁

i'm not a fashion student but I'm currently a freshman at parsons and I would say that if you're interested in going to a fashion school, you should definitely have a portfolio. Last year, I got into Edinburgh, Loughborough, Goldsmiths, Pratt, Parsons and CSM- but FYI, there is a foundation year that you would have to go through in CSM. Both countries still take 4 years to finish an entire bachelor's degree and you could technically apply DIRECTLY to the CSM fashion programme but it's extremely competitive since there are students that are also applying from the CSM foundation programme so that's something to keep in mind. Teachers can be critical but there is always a fair spread of different teachers- they're all there to help you improve as artists and you should definitely keep that in mind when you receive constructive criticism. Projects will take a lot of time but you will get out what you put in as it reflects in your work. Art school is there to help you build your portfolio so it's really up to you what you want to get out of it!

I would not enjoy paying a tuition fee and end up having online lectures for months x.x so I think it was meant for you to drop out Mikan, look how much better you are mentally and also studying something super practical and end up having your lectures online must be a bitch lmao.

I was a camera operator for some fashion shows, the catwalks, the different fashion cloths, and the gossip behind the camera with the models.

I'm not sure if anyone will see this but I just wanted to comment: I had a very, very, strict teacher in language school who I felt was unnecessarily harsh on me and when I was complaining to a friend they remarked that that teacher is only strict with students she has high expectations of, and that she was only strict with me cuz she knew I could do better. After that I started paying attention to how the teacher treated other students since I thought my friend was just trying to play devil's advocate, but sure enough: the kids who were just absolutely awful at Japanese she was incredibly kind with and the kids who were decent/good at Japanese she was incredibly strict with. It's definitely possible (and perhaps even likely) that Mikan's teacher was just a mean teacher who shouldn't be teaching but I just wanted to provide an alternate perspective that it could be because that teacher knows you can do better and is trying to help you reach your potential (even if you don't like their way of doing it). There are definitely some mean teachers out there but I think we should all consider (myself included!) whether we have genuinely mean teacher(s) or teacher(s) who are trying to help us grow.

I don't study fashion, I study English Lit, but as someone with serious adhd and possibly bipolar like you, I would like to say online classes are simply not it 😔 I'm like 2 months worth of work behind. I hope I can get some extensions for depression. I agree with you, it feels like an enormous waste of money to spend all of these pounds on online classes

It's great to be early. Stay tuned for this comment to be edited as i watch the video. :) Edit: I feel it was good that you dropped out for your mental health, it must have been fun but it is better that you came out and didn't make it harder on yourself then stuff already was. Bunka seems like a lot of fun and it looks great but with the fast pace I don't think I could do it if I tried. Anyway, you are doing great, continue having fun. 💞

I'm studying Fashion Design in Venice in a public university (I spend 3000euros circa for one year of tuition fees) so I'm very glad I got to get in, since is very demanded. But this all situation of online classes sucks, especially because a lot of professors changed last minute since they didn't want to teach online, so all my school career just got fucked up. And as Mikan had experienced in Japan, all schools are not that well organized, for example our pattern-making/sawing class is just the first 4months and is EXTREMELY INTENSIVE, you learn by watching what the teacher's hands are doing on a table, standing crushed by 60 other people without a projector, only with the notebook in hand. And the homework go from making 5 pants or 14 tops, or 1 jacket A WEEK. And now I'm learning textile making by watching a pixeled call on a hand-loom (╯ ͠° ͟ʖ ͡°)╯┻━┻

I went to a liberal arts school for graphic design. 2 years into my degree I switched from a BFA to BA. If I hadn’t I would have dropped out! I was at school 12 hours at least 3 days a week and never saw my family and I couldn’t do it anymore

Oh, my meds did that to me at one point. I kept trembling all the time and first my voice shook, then it got very whispy and it literally hurt to try to speak louder. They had to switch it out.
