Ellen, you stated everything very well. I have been married for 30 years to hearing women and I am deaf. I have experienced many of the same frustrations, challenges, and ignorances of all kinds of people. Coincidentally, it is funny, I happen to be Asian and my wife is Jewish. We have seen many funny things through our marriage. Ryan: you talked about Ellen‘s family and the extended family. It is difficult for a deaf person to walk into a hearing family who do not know much about deaf culture. However my big question is: what about your family? Can you tell all of us a little bit more about your family, your background, and how you were raised. Are they hearing or deaf or mixture? And how does Ellen fit into your family? I’m sorry if you’ve answered these questions many times before but I have not seen them.

I feel the question Ryan asked about fighting over communication is a good one. Communication is important in any relationship, whether you are hearing, deaf, have differing languages, or speak the same language. david it’s true that it’s unfortunate that that’s the first thing people will label you as (the very thing that makes you “different” and sometimes a target), but I don’t think it always means they want to negatively draw attention to you; it’s like when you don’t know their name, so you have to pick out anything that stands out about you to refer to you. “That deaf guy,” “that dude in the wheelchair...” it is still kinda like,, maybe you shouldn’t do that,,, because they’re a person too,,,, but idk I just wanted to clarify it doesn’t always come from a point of malice or hostility. Though I get how it can easily be offensive or a little off, I just think most people don’t mean any harm and are just kinda unaware about how hurtful it can be.

Here's a question for Ryan: growing up was it hard to learn sign and communicate with everyone? My 3 year old son is deaf and has been learning asl for a year and he just doesn't want to communicate. Any advice?
@florida20114 жыл бұрын
Stephen Wright this isn’t coming from Ryan and he might have a different response but from my experience (child of deaf adults and future interpreter) just keep working it. Use asl with others around you while around your son. Try and use a nonverbal approach so if he has any hearing, he isn’t trying to use that over visual and sign. Try and get involved with your local deaf community and encourage your son as he grows to be involved in that. Find children asl videos such as ASL Nook here on KZbin where he can watch stories being told in asl. (Sorry for assuming it is asl but there’s plenty of other ones for other signed languages too.)

My oldest boy is deaf and the rest of the fam is hearing so I have had some experience with this too. When we found out he was deaf (didn't find out till he was around 8 months, he is 21 now) we were lost. We started researching everything. We found a school here that was for deaf and hard of hearing. Once he got in and started learning ASL he was confused. But once we started learning he was excited, he wanted more. It just toke time and patience, lots of patience. He came around to it. He doesnt like to sign with his family but we do anyways. Give it time and don't stop signing. It is such a wonderful community. And when u r out in public noone knows what u r saying. Which is always fun

I don’t have any experience with deaf. But just wanted to say that my 3 year old is hearing and still doesn’t want to communicate. (He can speak, and does sometimes - but just has not had a lot of interest in communicating verbally most of the time). So it could just be his personality and age. Just wanted to sympathise and say 3yr olds can be a struggle regardless 😅

No I learned fairly easily! All kids learn at different speeds. Just keep reinforcing sign with actions. Like when you get milk, sign milk, etc. Hope that helps!

Ayy my moms deaf and I've learned Asl all my life as well, it's just a practice and passion into the language, I'd recommend that you introduce ur kids to deaf people and show them they have a world as well. I'm really glad you didn't go with the Cocolaur implant you get to see a whole new culture as they said 😂

Ryan, What kind of tips were you given as a child or what would you, as an adult, recommend teaching to deaf children. Edit: corrected typo

Thank you guys for this video. I found a girl 6 months ago, and she happened to be deaf too. Learning sign language is really fun and rewarding, few weeks back I was at a deaf party and i was the only hearing person there and it was really fun being able to communicate in their language. we do it this way, if she dosent understand what someone is saying to her, i help her, but i never speak for her, she always wants to try and understand what they are saying, but if she says what, our agreement is that i sign it.

I just discovered your channel and I gotta say. The way you guys keep respect between your relationship is much better off than any "normal" Relationships out there. It's not just love but it's communication and partnership. SO GOALS ugh. If you ever get to start a family, I wanna see you teach your kid with these values. It would be so beautiful and touching.

@EvanSaltare4 жыл бұрын
I needed 4 credits to graduate and language classes were the only ones available that were worth 4. Instead of taking two 3 credit courses, I chose ASL 1 since I thought it'd be more interesting than a spoken language and ignorantly assumed that sign language was universal. It didn't dawn on me that ASL is American Sign Language and different parts of the world have unique forms of signing. Long story short, I loved it. Passed with a 105 since I aced everything and got the 5 points of extra credit. I wish I'd taken it sooner and could've at least taken ASL 2 before graduating. It's been 3 years and I've lost a lot of it because I never kept up studying. I think about taking a class just for fun, maybe retaking ASL 1 at a smaller school to brush up, but the cost and time involved are not feasible at the moment. My advice is take the first course as early as you can, that way you have the time to take more advanced signing courses if you want.

@@EvanSaltare hey in their last video they were sponsored by skill share. Have you ever heard of that? Please don't take this as me being rude in anyway, I just wanted to let you know that you can easily take courses for a very affordable price. You can even try and see if you can use their "code" for the two free months... hope this may help you out.

@@eeyoreismyspiritanimal8761 I never even thought of that. I've heard of it but I lump it in with the kind of services I'd get a hundred coupons for whenever I'd buy textbooks. So I know of it but it simultaneously didn't exist in my little world. Thanks for the tip.

Music is incredibly important in my partner’s life and plays a significant role in our bonding and time with each other. Being that Ellen can listen to music or jam to a song, does Ryan ever feel like he is disconnected from that moment with Ellen? Ryan, do you ever look up lyrics to songs Ellen likes to see what she listens to? Or Ryan, are there songs that you really like just from the lyrics you’ve read (being the equivalent to a poem?)? Not sure if this is a bad question. I think that music is prevalent in most parts of our lives. From the music you choose to be in your videos, to a first dance at a wedding ceremony, to waiting awkwardly in an elevator ride. It is everywhere. So I guess paraphrasing, does Ryan ever feel he is missing out on that aspect? And how does he feel in situations where Ellen may be enjoying a song, but he cannot?

I am a student. A friend of mine, she was not deaf but had hearing problems and had a wired sound and had hearing aid. even though every one accepted her by the way she is, she was always ashamed of herself. She was afraid to interact socially. I always tried to encourage her. I wanter her to come out from her hiding place, i want her to face the world. every one in this world have their own challenges and i don't want her to hide from the real world because it will hurt her later . Everyone accept her but she is not accepting herself maybe because of fear. For me she is perfect. I hope this vedio will help her to realise the real world and to accept her small difficulties,. Thankyou for this vedio . you teach me that deaf is not a difficulty it is a culture.

As a person living with a person with a family from asia -she and her mother speaks my language but her hustband and all the extended family does not. I know some basic words but my girlfriend often helps me with the commuinications when I can't get through. I can see the likeness that it's just as somebody just not knowing the language. I agree with the things I've been through as well -and it might have been more easy to speak the same language but I feel that you grow closer together in someway that you must trust in the other person on another level.. This was a gem of a video to stumble on. And also you are both beatiful looking together. Make it last and have a nice day. :) Greetings from Sweden.
