@blueai50223 ай бұрын
I was going to say the same thing! Someone who goes out of their way to learn about the world around them, in spite of their terrible education, are far from dumb. I get that being self-deprecating is natural, but it makes me sad when Rachel says she's not smart--even if it's a joke. :(
@anishinaabae3 ай бұрын
i agree! the concept of smart vs. stupid and how we measure either is a colonial construct, too. schools are a very recent addition to human civilization, and yet somehow we all managed just fine for thousands of years. the bulk of teaching and learning was done through field experience; if you were lucky enough to have an elder who was considered an expert in their respective area, they'd take you under their wing as an apprentice. otherwise you'd just learn from your mistakes as you went! we all have our own skills, strengths, and specialties. just 'cuz we don't pick up everything with relative ease doesn't make us stupid!
@turtlestar873 ай бұрын
It makes me sad that you so often say you’re “stupid” or “not smart” just because your parents failed in their responsibility to make sure you had a comprehensive early education. You have such a willingness and desire to learn, and you have amazing insights that you’re incredibly adept at explaining to others. I mean, I get that criticizing yourself before others can criticize you is a common coping mechanism when you come from an abusive situation (same, honestly), but I think you’re brilliant and doing yourself a disservice!

Hey hi I’m gonna publicly wag my finger at you. You ARE smart. In fact, you are one of the most truly intelligent humans I’ve ever known and it’s a tragedy that your education was stolen from you by fundamentalism because you, ma’am, have the mind of a scholar. And beyond that, you use that big beautiful brain of yours to make positive impact in the world around you. And you’re hilarious lol. You’re an incredibly unique, special person and I am so so so beyond honored that I can call you one of the best friends I’ve ever had. So stop saying you’re not smart!!!! You are so smart!!!!

The Berry Pickers also serves as a lens of the Sixties Scoop which is something that affected mine and almost every First Nations/Metis/Inuit families I know. The stealing of Native children for white families who could not get pregnant or felt entitled to Native children has resulted in the loss of so many of our peoples, who have either had to find their way home, or be forever lost.

Totally agree we need more graphic novels! Unfortunately, publishers do NOT pay enough for GNs, so most artists can't afford to work on them. Its usually $30-50k for a 200 page GN. BUT payment is split into 3 parts, and you only get the 2/3 after turning in final art. Final art takes around 2 years to complete sooooo... you have to survive off approximately 16k for 2 years lolololol

Feeling emotional about stories and characters is completely valid! I think it shows how powerful stories can be, that they can move us to care for fictional people like they were real. (I’m also generally an emotional person, it doesn’t take much for me to cry. 😅) The book that had me emotional recently was The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arakawa! I was getting choked up even trying to explain the story to my mom, it just really resonated with me

Sadly Ruthie's story is a terribly common one. The widespread kidnapping of native kids in the midcentury is commonly referred to (in Canada at least) as The Sixties Scoop. Often it was facilitated by government ministries, hospitals or orphanages. Indigenous Canadians are still disproportionately likely to have their children taken away from them today.

There is a REALLY good comic on Webtoon called Rise From The Ashes. The elevator pitch is that there is a world where ghosts are everywhere and people called the red crows capture them. We start with a wisp named Winter who just wants to live in her house forever but she is captured and becomes bonded to a red crow. I loved it and it has a lot to say about society and people (ghosts) we see as less than us and use for our own benefit. I think you would like it!

Recently read an indie published fantasy romance duology that has queer and poly rep as well as shadow magic (which appears a little in book one and a lot in book two) that I really enjoyed and i think you'd like, too. The first book is called Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha, (a pen name for an author duo) and the sequel is Queen of Dreams. I haven't read A Night and it's Moon, only watched your videos, but there are a few parallels and I think this book does it a lot better. I think it's a lot better written than a lot of traditionally published romantasy so I hope you check it out!

FYI: these Kit Rocha books are published by Montlake, which is an imprint of Amazon Publishing. They use a similar approach to many indie books, such as their ebooks being Kindle exclusive (for obvious reasons), but as they’re published BY Amazon, they aren’t indie. Kit Rocha have self published in the past though, but their most recent two series, this one and the Mercenary Librarians through Tor, are traditionally published.

The Berry Pickers was also 5 stars for me. I was so enraged by Ruthie's "adoptive" parents, but the involvement of her "adoptive" aunts felt like an even bigger betrayal. The way the parents just died not ever regretting their actions left me feeling unfulfilled. Joe just refusing to take responsibilty for anything in his life abd bad decisions was really infuriating to me, but it further shows how much of a domino effect the kidnapping had in everyone's lives.

trigger warning for talking about miscarriage!! just a heads up, even tho it was a topic in the vid i dont wanna catch you off guard given your trauma. Anyway, I just wanted to comment and say that you talking about the Berry Pickers in the context of your experiences with miscarriages, and every time you have talked about it in the past, is really brave and I respect you so much. People don't talk about this stuff enough. I actually originally recommended your channel to my sister, because you have been so open about the topic and she often feels very alone in her experiences with child loss. Not to go into too much detail unsolicited or tell her story for her, but she lost her first child in the last trimester days after her birthday. Since then she's had two kids, but always considers her angel baby her first. I felt the need to comment about this mostly because you were right when you said people don't give those who lose children during pregnancy enough grace. Folks will ask the most inconsiderate questions, and never respect the boundaries of the person genuinely grieving the loss of their baby. Anyway, this is a ramble and all run-on sentences, but I wanted to thank you again for always being willing to talk about the topic in your vids even when it makes you cry. (Even if it makes me cry a little too, haha.) I someday want to write a queer paranormal book with romance elements and one day I hope maybe my book will show up on your channel, too. I promise I won't watch it, either! (unless you say I can ;D) hehe.
