Sorry you had to deal with that, it must've been annoying. Hearing this made me look at my own behavior, I'll try to be more mindful with others when having conversations like these. People make these type of big decisions because they know it's what's best for them and that's all that matters. Congratulations on the acceptance to the masters program, that's amazing!

Aww thank you! I’m really excited for the masters!! Also it’s nice to hear that you’ll try to be more mindful in the future. I’m glad to know that sharing my story has made some type of impact :)

@@lucywbeckyo this video is so coincidental for me. I’m somebody who is applying to NorthWestern for Early Decision, however initially (like a few days ago) I was applying to Cornell but changed my mind. I hope this goes well

I don't go to Northwestern, but I do go to a school nearby, and I'm glad that you didn't let anyone get to you about your decision. Ivies definitely aren't the end all be all and I wish more people would stress that!!! I'm so happy that you found a school that is great for you

Thank you that’s so sweet! And yesss I feel like so many people think ivies are the end all be all but there are so many other universities that are just as good and even better. Hope you do amazing things in the future as well

Thank you for the video! I just recently transferred from UCLA, about to start my first quarter at Northwestern in a couple of weeks and I've also been asked the same question quite often, my mentality is the same :).

I'm going to start pursuing a BS degree in material science and engineering in fall 2023, and I'm a bit curious how you are able to earn a BS/MS combined degree. Can you talk about your thought process, the program's requirements, and the application process, please? PS: Your videos have been an important guide for me as an incoming first-year NU student, and I really love the honest & direct way you talk about your experiences & thoughts. Thank you :-)

Congrats on NU💜💜💜 I’m so glad my videos have been helpful to you! I chose to pursue the BS/MS because I had extra room in my schedule. My choices were to either graduate early, add another major or minor, or get the BA/MS. I chose the BS/MS because I wouldn’t have to pay extra which could potentially save me $100-$200k (the cost of a masters program if you don’t do combined degree). Also the application process was relatively straightforward. As long as you have a high enough gpa, you are guaranteed admission. I hope that helps!

hey Lucy, I have been watching your transfer tip videos religiously as I've been working on my own transfer app to NU lol. Idk if you can answer this (my regional admissions officer has not gotten back to me on this question), but i'm curious about how exactly admissions officers know that they have my high school materials still, and how/if they know I got waitlisted previously. I was waitlisted last year and received an email about waitlisted applicants experiencing a higher than average rate of admission. How do NU admissions know that they have my old file? And does being waitlisted previously actually give transfer applicants somewhat of an edge? Thanks for taking time to look at this question and I really hope you keep creating videos they are awesome!!

Hi Luke, when I was applying to transfer, I emailed NU admissions and asked them if they had any of my high school materials. They responded saying “As a previous applicant to Northwestern, you will not need to re-submit official test scores or letters of recommendation. All other materials submitted with your Fall 2020 application will be available to the admission committee for reference, but cannot be used to satisfy the transfer application requirements.” This is my experience. I’m not sure if they still do it the same way, so I would wait to hear back from the admissions officer to confirm your situation.

Also, I do believe being waitlisted previously does give transfer applicants somewhat of an edge. I hope that answers your questions! Good luck transferring and let me know if you get in!!

When people asked why you transferred from Cornell, I don't think they were questioning your decision. They were just curious why you transferred to a peer school given what you had to give up, as you mentioned in the video. I bet if the reverse happened and you transferred from Northwestern to Cornell, you would probably get the same question often.
@lucywbeck

I agree that some people were probably just curious. However other people would say “Why’d you transfer from Cornell? Cornell is clearly a better school” or “I would’ve stayed at Cornell if I were you.” So I felt like those comments were questioning my decision.

@@lucywbeck Some people overblow the importance of departmental rankings in their heads; so in their mind, there's no reason give up a higher ranked department for just a peer school. But I think the kind of internships you had has proven that it's not as big of a deal as one may assume. And at the end of the day, it's more important to go to a school that fits you.
