AI will definitely not going to replace every developers, but it will replace a lot of them especially entry level developers (Fresher/Junior). If you want to survive in this this industry there is no way else but to improve your skill, especially business analysis skill so AI have no way to replace you. Fresh graduates, CS students, or anyone considering a tech career will have a lot of consideration to think about...

Reducing the number of developers is honestly the biggest fear I have. If suddenly only 1 single developer + AI can do the job that previously needed 5 people, most of us won't be able to find jobs anymore. Everyone's talking about AI replacing us, but even long before that it has the potential to completely destroy like 80% of the job market.

Governments need to impose restrictions on AI I'd say. Wishful thinking I know, but that's really the only hope we have if the future is going to be the dystopia we all think it's going to be. Either that or the government would need to provide some kind of universal income.

Thank you for your insight and for laying out your thoughts. I agree with your take. I’m graduating in May with a CS - Software Engineering degree. I use AI every day in my workflow, but I have to admit some days I get anxious about the potential for these systems to fundamentally change the career and industry I love. I always end these days with a stronger resolve to continue forging ahead and making myself a better developer.

I think the contributions of AI will expand and create new real estate that there haven't been before. Yes, a single developer today can do what 2 or 3 devs could do in the past, but now, that potential opens up new areas of exploration that will require 2 or 3 of AI-powered developers to solve that weren't problems that even existed years ago. And one of the beauties of the tech space is that more tech rarely makes the developer obsolete because they're already familiar with how logic and software language works. So they usually fit in very seamlessly into new iterations with perhaps some difficulties, but hardly will they be insurmountable.

We had a discussion about ChatGPT in the dev team and even testet it and we were not able to derive anything useful from it working on a complex app where several departments have to work together.

As someone who’s been following the space for a 6 years. And following the AI waaay before the boom, the trend is going up really quickly, way before we expected it. “Experts” said in 2021 that having a LLM like GPT-4 was for at least 2030. We got it 2 years later. The developer market will shrink a lot in the next 2 years. Won’t need to pay 50 developers 200k$ for one small projects. Won’t be surprised if by 2028 (5 years from now), AI will understand natural language waay better and for small projects (Like a small app) entrepreneurs can just prompt the AI, and for large projects, like social media etc… only a handful of programmers will stay.

I think that the world needs more code than we can imagine, if a developer with AI tools is as efficient as 5 devs, rather than firing 80% of the devs, a lot more code will need to be written and giving AI to all of your devs will just supercharge your company. I do think it will initially have companies firing some of their workforce, but eventually as the companies realize they can envision more complex and larger products because of AI it will eventually correct itself, having companies hiring more developers who are proficient with the AI tools, and getting them to work on larger codeblocks at a time.

I do agree with it 100% because it happened with graphic/digital design: every time a new efficiency tool is released the companies may make their design branches smaller, but it often result in 1. More demand in design from other companies 2. More elaborated products to fullfill the enterprise portfolio and market share The scenario of 80% of the work force being fired is only worrying if we still with the exactly same companies and digital products we have today - which haven't been the case in the past 30 years or so

2 white pills: 1) if AI can completely wreck software developer careers ... it's going to wreck ALL white color jobs sans a tiny amount of law/executives 2) entirely possibly that if access to these burgeoning AI tools continues ... single/small hobby teams of developers could disrupt entire niche industries (AKA way more but smaller companies aka stop thinking in terms of 'jobs' but instead think in terms of how quick can I start something interesting with help of AI)

I've seen predictions that are all completely contradictory. Earlier this year, with the complexity of frontend and backend being automated with BAAS, people were saying frontend will be more in demand. Now people say the opposite. I read recently on twitter people saying UX designers will be obsolete. When I asked GPT what web dev positions AI can't do well, it said UX as one of them because of the human element. In this video, you say leetcode questions will be obsolete, on Medium someone said leetcode and DSA will be more important than ever because your logic and problem solving skills will be the only important thing going forward rather than knowing various technologies (since if you don't know a language well, you can augment it with AI). Others say go into a specialized niche, others say be a generalist. The more information you gather on the future and AI the less clear it becomes.

I think software engineers will become "information and validation engineers" in the future. Where less time is spend on coding and more time about where and what information to gather and how to display it for their application. Humans are still the only ones understanding enough of the context of whats being developed, so they still need to validate anything generated by AI. Even if you can automate the validation steps using AI, you still need a human to indicate what to validate and when its correct.

It will force programmers who want to stay job ready to learn how to use AI to increase their performance and efficiency at the job. Being good or even great programmer will no longer be enough. So in a way, it is "just another tool" you need to learn to secure yourself a job. But unfortunately since everything will require much less actual experience and "manual coding", there will be less need for current number of programmers, resulting in firing more devs all around the world (as we can already see now). It will not replace devs for a long time, I agree. But it will make some people lose their dev job since 1 programmer + AI == 2 programmers, so why pay two when you can just pay one? Job market will change a lot

Can you clear up why backend is more difficult? I've read online that backend is being automated and frontend is more complex and constantly changing. What is it about backend do you see as being more complex? Obviously backend is a very broad term, from building APIs to databases and everything in between. But I wonder what specifically you mean by backend.

To your last point about how AI isn’t gonna improve as fast as we think, I’m inclined to disagree only because AI, with GPT-4 has the ability to IMPROVE ITSELF. If it was only humans that determined how good ai was gonna be then I’d agree with u but THIS? Nahhh, I think AI improvement is gonna be exponential. Would love to hear your pov and any counterpoints to this.

@@jakelexington7610 its not like ai has been around since prolog in the 70s. i mean we totally understand how the human brain works, so a fake azz brain can work better, old news, children have been saying this sine the late 70s, clearly they dont understand how business operates, and how attempting to automate everything will just make consumers bail. i mean theres only 2 employees at mcdonalds and no one goes there nemore bc they tried to automate the drive through and uber eats.

I think both are true. AI will grow but I think it may take longer than people expect. There will be a plateau period and then a period where people say AI was overhyped, and then it will explode again. That is the natural growth pattern everything. Markets, technologies, and everything else. It mainly has to do with infrastructure and speed of human understanding. For ex, it takes awhile for people to see what something is capable of, put it into place bypassing current structures and regulations, and for all of that to impact other structures in a non-linear way.
