Great video, thanks. Just a tip I have learned about reusing jars to remove the smell of the previous contents. 1/2 tsp oxyclean and very hot water... let is sit for a bit and rinse well, it removes pickle odors and salman which both are hard to remove.

I use a soak of Dollar Store White Vinegar Cleaning, stronger than table WV. I add Dawn to the mix, let soak, also use to easily remove the jar labels. I am saving jars, I have zero knowledge of the canning and keeping no matter the method! I do know how to save them for when I do learn

Nice! Here is a way you can release the air much easier on each bottle. Put a thumb-tack hole on each cap and place a piece of electrical tape that is folded on one end with the adhesive covering the hole on the other end. When you wish to release the air, just pull on the folded side of the tape and all of the air will release without having to struggle when you untwist them :)

Place some frozen vegis in the chamber and a valve on the lid to see if it will dehydrate the food as it thaws. Seems to be a 12 to 24 HR process kept in a vacuum. A gage is a big plus to monitor the vacuum over time not just depth.

Well, it is almost a year since you made this video and I have just come on board. Today, it is hard to find masson jars for all the canning I have to do, so you can imagine the interest I have in what you are showing us. I have some large pickle jars that I keep dry goods in, and I would really like to be able to keep them in a vacuum. The problem is in the lids. The lids are old and the rubber seal has deteriorated. I'll be using your ideas to create my own vacuum system, but I'll have an added challenge to rejuvenate these old warn out lids. Thank you for the effort you put into sharing your ideas with the rest of us.

I haven't tried this yet - but I was thinking of running a very thin bead of FOOD GRADE silicone around the bottom of the lid & letting it solidify, to create a seal. (Don't put the lid on before the silicone dries or you will never get them off!) I would guess (but have not checked it out) that Aquarium SS is probably food safe because it is non-toxic to fish, reptiles & turtles. Actually, any PURE silicone sealant is food safe after curing - but you have to make absolutely sure that there are no additives in it, like dyes or mold inhibitors, so I wouldn't use it unless labelled food safe or non-toxic to fish. I saw small silicone baking sheets in Family Dollar & thought they might work as jar gaskets but I haven't tried it yet - it might be too thick to make a good seal between the jar & lid.

Jonathan..ok…I lied…I’m gonna ask you another question. I ordered an oil vacuum pump like you have except mine is 4.5 CFM. In your video you replaced the port fitting on your pump with a barb fitting so you can connect the Vinyl tube to the pump. I thought that would be simple enough. However I saw a lady on KZbin that made a vacuum chamber with these small pumps (like you have except it’s blue). She DON’T remove and replace that fitting on the pump because it’s connected to some pump inside. Is that true..I’m confused. Is there a special way to put on the barb fitting?

Good morning. I haven’t seen that video you mentioned so I’m not sure of their method. The reason I replace the hose Barb on mine was so I wouldn’t have to splice the vacuum line. You could always get a hose Barb for the bucket that was the same size as what you have on your pump and match your vacuum line to those (I’m guessing 3/8 or so).

The website is Out the Back Door Homesteading and Out Door Life if you want to view it. She has good ideas. The fitting on my and her pump requires a screw on hose not a barb. It uses a Refrigerant hose which those hoses are expensive. That’s why I want to replace it with a barb fitting. Did your pump originally come with that screw on type of fitting?

Mine was not attached to a pump on the inside but yes it was a threaded fitting that I just unscrewed and replace with a hose Barb. Is it possible to get a hose Barb fitting to screw onto the fitting on your machine?

Oops I miss understood the question. I think I will take a chance and replace the fitting on the machine with a barb fitting like you did. I don’t know what she’s (out the back door) talking about🤷‍♂️

$50 for a tin can!? 50 cal ammo can half that price. Good idea but not very economical.

Thanks for the feedback. You are correct in that todays prices have definitely increased since I made this video. There are probably other options available that could achieve the same end result. As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention.
