Using the DIY vacuum bucket to vacuum seal old screw top jars, lug cap jars, big jars, small jars or any jar that was once sealed.
Here is a link to the gauge I bought from Amazon.

Real good alternative to expensive vacuum sealers (after buying the vacuum pump). I would add a relief vavle to release the vacuum so that you don't have to disconnect the hose. It can be added to the lid of the bucket.

I've used a vacuum pump from an old AC service cart to pull a slight vacuum on expensive automotive clearcoat hardener containers to remove any moisture once I've opened it to prolong it's shelf life. Also to check for porosity or leaks when rebuilding engines. A word of caution though is if you let your pump run to the maximum vacuum it can pull it can easily crush your can and potentially shatter the jars. I know you know this by how you limited your vacuum to 10 inches of mercury. At sea level and full vacuum there is close to 15 pounds per square inch of force on the outer surface of your containers. It's a great tool that deserves some respect too. Thank you for sharing!

So you think you're so smart? Showing us extremely useful information. Even had a plot twist at the end... I'll be honest, I had NO CLUE it would do that to the jars! I kept wondering if you were gonna put a valve on the 5gal to close it off to hold the vacuum. I'm storing rice, flour, and sugar in 55gal plastic drums... I'm gonna throw desiccant, O² packets, and vacuum. Thanks so much man. Never apologize for working clothes. That's how I knew I could trust what followed.

Nice! Here is a way you can release the air much easier on each bottle. Put a thumb-tack hole on each cap and place a piece of electrical tape that is folded on one end with the adhesive covering the hole on the other end. When you wish to release the air, just pull on the folded side of the tape and all of the air will release without having to struggle when you untwist them :)

Thanks for the great video: Hint for those with HVAC gauges...you can just use your gauge set to to the bucket with a a 143a barb installed on the bucket top or even the bucket side. a much deeper vacuum can be achieved with sealed purpose built hoses and not clear hoses. EDIT: Be careful though! Too much vacuum can collapse the bucket and can also collapse the jars...a very dangerous situation.

I, too, appreciated this video, and even bought the same bucket and parts to make my own system. THEN I researched the amount of vacuum needed to adequately protect food, and I read you need 22 lbs. If this system only pulls 10 lbs, it doesn't seem safe. But a couple of commenters said their buckets collapsed when they pulled more than 10 lbs. Has anyone else been able to get to 20 lbs or so without collapsing your bucket?

I like this. Any less Saturday bucket would collapse. When I vacuum seal a jar with a brake bleeder I was told that 10 lbs of pressure is good and safe BUT that is assuming that the gage on the brake bleeder is correct. I think I would feel safer with this. I'm going to contact a scientist on KZbin that would know about this. Thank you. You might want to know that the dial on a typical vacuum gauge displays inches of mercury vacuum, not pounds. Thus, if you pull a vacuum and the gauge reads 20 it is reading 20 in Hg Vacuum.

Very nice solution for when you have access to electrical energy. At some point, we might not, and if the Solar flare is intense enough, it could also mess with the wires of Solar panel systems. I like the Pump N Seal system because it doesn't require electrical energy, is relatively well priced, and pulls a surprisingly strong vacuum (more than most food saver type sealers--pulls about 28" Hg). I'm trying to develop much lighter jars/containers than the typical glass ones. I'm thinking modified bamboo containers might work. They need to be modified to not be so gas permeable. There are different ways to do this. But I need to do some tests before I could recommend anything.

I've done enough research into electronics to know that the people who work on electronics would have the most essential systems back up and running within less than a year but we wouldn't have current gen electronics until 2 years. Everything would be severed into pockets of different levels of randomized tech from 70s tech up to current gen. Some chipmaking machines rely on metal cutouts as an analog version to programming. Many are out of commission but wouldn't take much to bring back online. Also enough people know how energy generation works. Winding coils and running a magnet across it is very basic for modern times. Figuring out what to use to to move it only takes a Medieval mindset because it's been done since early civilizations, batteries were around back then too. Hollywood screws with minds and blinds people to true human capacity, it's hard to watch after doomsday movies without spotting people walking by items that could easily fix their power issues. Instead they travel to a power station somewhere that's somehow surrounded by dangerous things which could have been avoided by collecting items near home that produce power. Even still solar flares wouldn't effect power generation that much to begin with. It would just affect devices with digital computers on one side of the globe.

However I would be interested how long it is possible to store fresh meat or cheese or fresh vegetables or fresh fruits in the vacuum. Would fruits be squashed?

There's a YT video where they pulled a high vacuum (almost 29" of Hg) on a railroad tank car. The vacuum catastrophically collapsed the tank car in a spectacular fashion. 10" of vacuum on one square foot equats to over 1400 psi of pressure. That's why cans are round and eggs are the shape they are.

Yes you have a vacuum seal on the jars.....but you should take them to 30 Hg....not 10. Food saver takes the jars to 20Hg....but for long term storage 30 Hg is the best....that's the top of the guage....not just 10 Hg.

I have a small vacuum sealer made of a 5"(?) PVC pipe and a Twist Tite end pipe sealer. To be sturdy enough, maybe the space around the jars in a pickle bucket would have to be filled in with stones?? I dunno.

1 sq inch of a column of mercury 30" high weighs 14.7 lbs. You are correct. Pressure is psi, vacuum is inches of Hg. Vacuum on one side of a seal can be equated to pressure on the other side of a seal. I believe climbing a 20,000 ft mountain and sealing a jar, then take it down to sea level is the same as drawing 10" of Hg. But who will go to that effort to vacuum seal a jar?😏
