Do Japanese girls find beards attractive? The short answer is no... Japanese people generally don't like beards, except for a few people.
So here's my question: how many girls will actually find beards attractive? This video will answer that question.

Generally speaking, Japanese society in itself doesn't quite appreciate beards. A lot of jobs require you to shave and they won't even hire you if you don't agree to do so. So it's not surprising that many Japanese girls don't like beards. Well, actually, I was pretty surprised that 30% them chose photos with a beard. Fortunately, beards are something that you can just shave. So if you want to live in Japan, you may consider that. (I'm a rebel so I don't let the society tell me what to do with my beard lol.) But do you know another thing that you can do to make your life in Japan a lot more enjoyable? Learning Japanese! So if you want to learn Japanese with me, I can send you Japanese lessons by email. @@KakaOfTheRealMadrid Culturally speaking (for Japan), Male beauty standards point more toward androgynous males. If you look at host clubs in Japan, essentially all men are clean shaven. There are definitely a market for men who have beards, but it's much smaller. As for why women didn't shave public hair, it was because it was a sign of maturity and adulthood. The trend of trimming and shaving it only became more recent probably due to western influences. Japanese men for the most part didn't mind the full bush until possibly recently (and a lot of Japanese women now do shave their pubes) Stop judging other countries customs based on your own values. The results seems difficult to interpret. We might guess that most like "B" or hairless faces, but "G" is also hairless and no one really picks that one. I think these girls are picking attractive faces more than purely looking at the beards. In real life, you can't separate the beard from the face. I have hunch that people liking beards or not depends if they think that person is more or less attractive with their beard style. To get better results, I think the questions should have been "does this person look better or worse with a beard?"

@@thedarkknight9021 It because of their history and pop culture there. For many many decades it's been the case where anyone young in movies or TV is clean shaven and only older men have beards. So basically all girls just want guys with no beards because in pop culture having a beard means you're old. Atleast that's what i've noticed in Japanese movies over the past 20+ years. Like no male actors under 40 have any kind of facial hair, unless it's a period role or comes from an existing material, like an anime or something.
@kn2549
@kn2549 5 жыл бұрын
What foreigners seem to not understand is that facial hair in general is viewed as being unprofessional in Japan since majority of the companies dont allow any kind of facial hair. Your appearance is something that indicates what you do living, and this is very important if you want to connect(make friends or date) with native Japanese people. You will be judged on whether you are “appropriate” enough to be introduced to their family and friends or even just walking alongside together. Yea i know it may sound like it sucks for foreigners who are not used to this, but Japan takes professionalism very seriously. Now its different for people who are either entertainers, athletes, or people who own their businesses. They sort of get a pass, but these people are the minority in Japan.

I once had a group interview for a teaching position in Tokyo. One of the first things the school said to us all was that they had a zero tolerance on facial hair! Around 4 of the other candidates opposite me were highly experienced, mature teachers with neat beards! The look of disgust on their faces was priceless. Another company I worked for in Nakano had a policy where if you didn’t look good with facial hair you were told you looked dirty and must shave. I was never singled out, but some of my colleagues, who I thought looked fine with trimmed stubble, were interrogated if they didn’t shave for a few days. It was ironic because the office we were working in was run down and dirty. Smoking inside and in front of clients was no problem for them, but facial hair? No, no! Smoking? Daijobu:)

Some of them called us bearded men "unclean", "dirty" because we just happen to have facial hairs. My question is;- You think long haired females are "clean" and not filthy? Hell, as an Asian guy (Married!) with a full beard I got a lot of flak from mostly Northeast Asian ladies i.e Chinese, Korean and Japanese who said I look dirty and old but THEN I got a LOT of complements from Southeast Asian ladies who said I look great, matured and definitely should keep my beard. The hypocritical irony is that MOST of the "saintly" sages of old such as Confucius and etc have beards and they were WORSHIPPED? What sort of ironic hypocrisy is that?

Or are you suggesting since Japanese society leans against facial hair that means they should dislike all body hair because they’d be hypocrites otherwise? It’s possible to not like facial hair but be okay with pubic hair; they aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s like saying people who don’t like beards should be bald or else they’re hypocrites.
@UshioKiss
@UshioKiss 5 жыл бұрын
To be fair, shaving pubic hair (or your leg hair or armpit hair really) isnt actually more hygienic or anything. We grow hair there for a reason. Besides, the hair basically grows back instantly and scratches like crazy, especially if you have coarse and pointy Asian hair. And I would hope that your pubes arent getting anything on them. Meanwhile a beard does catch food in it... Not that I personally dont think it's any different from just having to wash the hair on your head everyday, which Asian people usually do. It's normal to take baths every day so I dont see why you would think they are very dirty at all, even their pubes. At least in comparison to the west anyway.

I would be interested in knowing if this survey would possibly skew the other way if the women were shown pictures of foreigners rather than Japanese men, because there's a girl I follow on Twitter who recently stopped over in Japan while going through her honeymoon vacation, and she and her new husband made Tinder profiles just for fun to see who might get the most matches. The girl and her husband are both American; the girl is thin and relatively short, and her husband is a fair bit taller than her but also has a lot of facial hair and body hair. I expected her to get more matches, but her husband actually got way more than her. I know that no group of people in any part of the world can be called a monolith, but I was actually aware of this general preference that Japanese women have, so I was surprised to hear that her husband won over her in Tinder matches. But something else I noticed with the Japanese women when they expressed interest in beards is something that is generally true of women everywhere: beards that are well maintained and not terribly long are better received than those that are not. The girl's husband I mentioned has a beard and mustache, but while his beard could be considered long, it is also very well maintained. I think that would be a good follow-up video for this one, Mr. Yuta: foreigners with beards and without, which are considered more attractive, and whether beards alone or beards with mustaches or mustaches alone would win our over the other. Also, I don't remember which region of Japan they visited (although I would imagine it to be one of the more popular ones), but I would also be curious to know how much this preference would vary depending on where in Japan one finds themselves in. Love you videos, Mr Yuta, please keep them coming! 👋

5 жыл бұрын
Well it’s not like Japanese men are genetically able to sprout massive dense facial bushes that extend all the way to the neck like middle eastern and European mean. So to Japanese men and women, the goatee and stubbly beard look are considered hairy in their index. While a more androgynous look is popular for men in Japan and makes them look more kind, peaceful and beautiful, unlike the image of delinquents and tattooed yakuza members who commonly have beards, there still is more reason as to why women and men prefer the beardless look in japan. The west praises masculinity, even in women, while it shames femininity, even in women. East Asia appreciates femininity in men and women and the ways that men express masculinity is very different. Rather than hitting the gym to become a beefy dude while getting some cool tats, an undercut, and growing a beard seems like masculine goals in the west, Japan believes that masculinity is about sacrifice, intelligence, being reserved/patient, working hard, having a good and stable job, not being a criminal nuisance to others, and providing for their family. Naturally, it doesn’t matter what physical expressions they display because that doesn’t impact how manly they feel according to their societal values on men, whereas western men need to be muscular and grow beards like marvel superheroes to feel that their masculinity is validated. Not only that, Japanese women are extremely feminine (which makes them popular among western men), so Japanese men being more feminine as well doesn’t really make things complicated because they are both in their respective masculine and feminine roles, just that women are hyperfeminine and the men are more feminine than western men. Respectively, American women are very masculine and American men are super mega masculine, both in the masculine and feminine roles, but with a little more manliness added to each of them. Additionally, rather than sexiness or sultriness, being cute or beautiful is more praised in Japan, which is why their men appear more cute and docile now and the women look like real life anime characters. Western ideals look for a woman who is curvy (big breasts, skinny waist, huge ass) with a nice tan, a ambiguous ethnic background, has lip injections, shows off her body in a skimpy bikini, and wears a thick layer of makeup on their face. In East Asia, such beauty standards are impossible for them to attain due to their naturally small body frame and size, so their ideals look more like a petite woman with small and perky breasts, a tiny waist, small hips, and a small but perky butt. Add in pale skin (tan skin doesn’t look good on asians, plus the sun gives us spots on our faces when we get tanned), big doe-like eyes, reserved fashion, and a reserved posture akin to the mannerisms of Edo period japan, and you get a cute woman who appears a bit too childish in appearance according to western perspectives (this is why people think asian women don’t age, because they’re comparing them with western women who dress older than they really are). In terms of the environment rather than societal ideals, the clean shaven look is also so popular in japan because it has extremely high humidity levels and gets uncomfortably hot in the summer. Imagine swamp ass levels. Sporting a lot of hair in that kind of weather is going to make you feel a lot hotter in temperature and risk passing out from a heat stroke, which is very common in Japanese summers. So naturally many women wear ponytails or cut their hair to a bob cut/pixie in the summer and the men stay as clean shaven as possible to keep the environment clean due to the bacterial levels being ridiculous and needing to keep that in control (Japanese people clean like crazy, if you ever live like you do in America, a cholera outbreak would occur in Japan) and because it just looks and feels hot to have a beard. On the bright side though, the high humidity levels gives the women youthful and plump skin that doesn’t dry out like if you lived in a Deseret. The people who live in the northern parr’s of japan especially have great skin because it’s humid AND cold so that allows for their pores to be small and their skin to retain moisture without drying out and wrinkling. I have met many Japanese people who live in the dry parts of the U.S. and their skin doesn’t look so good after a decade or two of living in Arizona, Nevada, etc. so it’s not like I’m pulling this stuff out of my ass.

I thought the selection was pretty good since it's a Japan specific video. Option "I" was a bit much (the only men that might wear that are what, 20-30 years above the age range of the women in this video?) but otherwise pretty realistic options. Putting, say, a giant Scottish man with a dwarf-like beard of absolute manliness would be out of place here.

I know that culturally japanese people regards beard with uncleanliness and/or owtlaws but times have changed. Schoolgirls are probably attracted to clean faces because idols and stuff are like that. Something I learned through my long experience is that Japanese/korean girls dont like Beards, Muscles, Tattoos; they rather prefer Tall and Skinny. That's it. We can often see them dating a guy that would be considered totally ugly in western countries. But the look is really no big deal. According to many surveys, at least in korea, Money is by far the most important factor when picking a man, then comes his Mind and character; and only after his Look and appearance.

Only in Japan is having a bowl haircut and acting like a little girl acceptable for men but having a beard is EWWWW.

It's almost like Japanese men don't have a primal urge to show off how manly they are to anyone and everyone.

@@gaiusjuliuspleaser Yeah.. it wasn't always like this, though. I've lived in Japan for a few years. Most girls I've dated here were pretty surprised at my small amount of chest hair and I'm not even THAT hairy by Western standards. A few told me to remove all of it. Japan is a strange place sometimes.

Sacha Daenens more like they can’t grow beards so they only need to shave once every week or so but we have a different pilosity, for example I’d have to shave once every morning and it’s too much of a pain in the ass plus I look better with a beard. I live in japan tho and no one has a problem with it or are less kind because of it

Honestly, I think it's pretty rare to find guys who look best with a full grown beard. I don't think I can pull off a beard, as my facial hair naturally curls all around and just looks trashy. I figure it's better to lightly shave so that everyone can see that there is facial hair growing, while also showing that you're trying to take care of your appearance and that you aren't testosterone deficient.

For anyone with a beard who is worrying - before I came to Japan, I was legit worried about this "can I get a job if I have a beard? Can I get a girlfriend?" - the answer to both is a yes. It's not a problem.

Yes! They don't really mind foreigners having beard, even if it's messy (not traditional businesses though), as long as it is not as bizarre as "I".

The best way to conduct this test is to have a single person with multiple styles displayed, then do the same for 3 more candidates. This way we can get more reliable information.

That's actually smart. Also, I've noticed that the answer might be different if they were asked independently instead of in a group setting pressured by what their friends would think of them.
