@Clint Cannon yes we get those temps! Last summer the whole province was on fire for over 2 months. There were days that the sun was completely blocked from smoke, it was like hell on Earth. My coral bark died years ago. It couldn’t handle the heat. As for the moose, hopefully this is my year for a tag!

When you talk about high heat tolerant maples you compare to high humidity areas like Texas. It would be great to have recommendations for high heat tolerant maples in dry climates. I live in Nevada and it’s a zone 7 but it’s hard to find a Japanese maple that can handle the sun here. It would be great to have some recommendations for this area.

Here in southwest Australia my Japanese maples would burn to a crisp in full sun. All my trees are in dappled light and protected from late afternoon sun.

In SoCal it's a big fat no. My Chinese maple are doing great though. (Shantung). Hoping they grow and provide shade for my bloogood. The bloodgood is looking very sad right now.

Thanks for your videos, I have learned a lot. You guys saved my Japanese maples. I have 2 Emperor 1s (in full sun, zone 7 borderA/B ) which would not grow for 2 years (< 1 ft tall) until I put a sun shade cloth around them. Since shading (for 2+ yrs) are now around 40+ inches tall and outgrowing the shade cloth. The top are doing well after poking out (now 8-10 inches above the cloth). So I was think of taking the cloth away, (a) do you agree it's time and (b) should I paint the trunk (with a tree 'wound'/graft sealer product) to protect it for a year or 2? Thanks.

What does “full sun” even mean? It’s almost pointless to go further based on the lack of definition. Full sun pertains to 6 to 8 hours of direct exposure. If you live in an area that gets 90+ temps throughout late summer, you’re better off providing afternoon shade and then increasing exposure from there.

I live in zone 7a in the West. I'm up in the mountains at about 6,000 feet above sea level. We regularly get into the high 90's and low 100's during the summer with very low humidity (high desert). The sun is much more intense up here than 100 degrees at a lower altitude though. How does elevation affect these trees?

I'm in a similar situation zone 7b at 5,000 feet elevation. I have planted my Japanese maples in morning sun afternoon shade and they are doing fine except they are green rather than red and Im not getting the fall color show. I keep hoping that they just need to settle in and just give it some time.

@@donnasantamaria8317 I have the same problem with my bloodgood. I have it planted just north of two mature maples and it gets too much shade I think. It gets red, but it's really light and there's still a lot of green in the leaves. This summer I planted two five gallon Emperor ones and I gave them full sun. They get almost no shade at all. They both started green and then turned that really deep red color, but I've noticed over the last couple of weeks that the leaves are on them are turning green again even, though they're still getting full sun.

I live in Dallas, TX. Very hot summer as you've heard. We have a Japanese waterfall maple and it gets full afternoon sun. Some of the leaves are turning yellow. Also, the branches of those leaves have turned gray on the top. What does that gray bark indicate? They still have their brown color on the bottom. We put a popup tent over them temporarily but are going to get some shade cloth today to replace the popup cover. Do you recommend 50% shade cloth or 70%? Thanks for your time. Typically grey bark is just older growth but if it has multiple shades it can be sun burn

Problem is that when you shade them they start to stretch and loose their form, at least here in Oregon.
