It's interesting to see the generational differences. Because of the age structure of Japan, just looking at the entire population as a whole might not give you a good understanding when it comes to a topic like this. You need to dig deeper. But a lot of information about japan isn't translated into English. So if you want to learn Japanese with me, I will send you Japanese lessons where I teach you the kind of Japanese that real-life Japanese people speak. Click here and subscribe bit.ly/3q9N0rV

@@buahkelapaliar8829 Well, I can partially agree. Japanese people are generally non-confrontational, often choosing to say nothing rather than speak up about something which could potentially cause an argument. Whether or not that means they'd feign support or that they genuinely don't care (in the sense that same-sex people can marry) could be a point of contention, as both things can be attributed to a desire to avoid confrontation. I'd like to believe that Japanese people are more supportive of that, at least the younger ones (think about the diversity in manga/anime regarding sexualities, I don't think it's simply a kink), it's not a super prejudiced country (maybe somewhat ignorant/traditional in certain aspects but not outright hateful). it's not surprising really. just disappointing. imagine someone saying "amputees are disgusting". ok? they can't help being amputees. it's not a choice. i dont care if people are for or against it. that's their own business. when someone tries to force the mentality that "it's repulsive" or "everyone should be gay" that's when i care. just stick to your beliefs, and let me stick to mine.

@@thesen8 There's also the issue of just being tolerant. At some point being tolerant won't be enough, we need to learn to be accepting. Being *tolerant* of black people is still inherently racist, because it's like saying you don't see them as equals in society, only that you'll put up with them like some sort of deficiency that will die out. We have to learn to accept people if we wish to move forward as a society, at least in my opinion.

@@mikkimillie6732 it's impossible to force others to be accepting unless they have a reason to do so. Like if their child were to be gay, or a close family member. Even then, some people will never be accepting, and trying to force it onto them will just make things worse. A big argument against LGBT right now is that the ideology is being shoved down people's throats. If we all just lived our lives the way we want to live them, people would learn to be accepting naturally.

This just makes me so happy. Like, really happy. I've always wanted to go to Japan once I learn the language but have always been afraid of negative reactions to my community in general. However, as many Japanese people don't openly discuss feelings or opinions in general outside of groups of friends, I felt I could perhaps adapt. That being said, needing to hide myself away and emotionally distance myself from others just to blend in would be incredibly lonely. It makes me very happy to see so many people embrace change and accepting that many people are just different in many ways. I try to see it from all sides as much as possible, but the positive reaction in this video is just very uplifting. Very awesome

I am a lesbian and was openly gay from the age of 12 until I left Japan in my early 20s. While I did experience some homophobia (which you will experience everywhere), the main reaction I got from most Japanese people was to complely ignore and never discuss the issue. I think this comes down to the Japanese culture of not wanting to offend anyone with divisive opinions, so it better so just say nothing and ignore the issue. So while I did feel accepted, at the same time I felt alone because I felt I couldn't be myself, as any time I brought up the topic of girlfriends or women I liked, the subject would be changed. Over time I just learned not to speak of it, except with my closest friends. So I would say that you are unlikely to experience any major homophobia, but at the same time don't expect the average Japanese person to be ready to discuss any topics surrounding it.

@n/a There is a specific subculture in Japan (that may exist in other countries too) of men who act super macho and arrogant. The man at 2:09 is perfect example. When they see you with a girl, they get angry and offensive. They think you should be with them and they make sexual comments and rude remarks to you. If you reject their advances then they get even more insulting. You usually find them in nightlife spots and around bars. Most of the homophobia I had came from these kind of men.

The declining birth rate issue is totally different then the marriage equality issue. You want to know why there is a declining birth rate? Because when women get married, they are expected to no longer have jobs and to be a full time house wife, which is not something most women want to commit to. I think instead of worrying that the gays are not going to marry women and therefore not having children, they should re-evaluate the real issue behind the declining birth rate.

yes and i also think that, it's not that gay couples can't have children because they're gay, if they want to, they can get a sperm donor. (or adopt, but that's besides my point) i think it's stupid to blame the gays because homosexuality has existed for forever. (like that one guy said in the video) i think that some of those people are just trying to find an excuse for their homophobia.
@tjqueen_

@@cokebear1337 I agree, indifference is definitely appreciated, but that is only just the tip of the iceberg of possibilities. When a population of people act indifferent, this can be reassuring since it is better than nothing and it's usually framed in a way that isn't hostile or overly obnoxious. However, indifference can be very dangerous if extreme urgency, action, or "taking sides" is required. For instance, if a group of people were being persecuted, murdered, caged, and beaten for something they cannot change, is it morally right or even progressive for the situation to say "It's none of my business. I'm fine with whatever"? I don't want this to sound like I'm attacking you because like I said, I absolutely agree that indifference is appreciated, but that's all it really deserves: appreciation. In cases where extreme urgency is required, indifference could truly be the reason for how humanity self-destructs.

One of the great things about homosexual relationships is that even if they can't have kids they can always adopt one that needs a home. Sometimes we don't need more children... why not help those that are in need already :) Edit: Omg I'm sorry if I started a small rant. I was saying that most homosexual couples aren't able to get children so it may lead to adoption. But most homosexual people are hated due to the fact they can't have children. And I was agreeing that there are teens and small children that need adopting all over the world and most people forget that. It's okay to have your opinions.

@maxinoume
@maxinoume 4 жыл бұрын
@@samhwwg I would say it is not a valid CONCLUSION because it is too much conjecture from not enough data. But it definitely is an interesting discussion to have. In my experience, it is more socially acceptable for women to be "bi-curious" than for men. A lot more "straight" women try kissing or having sex with other women than men do with other men. I don't know why. Maybe women are less straight on average, maybe it's mainly indoctrination. So if we assume Japan is similar to my experience in Canada, women might have more of a first-hand experience hence the "If they love each other". They can personally understand why a person would marry another person of the same sex; because they, themselves, might have felt attraction towards another woman in their lifetime. Whilst the men might have not, so they don't personally feel concerned or connected, or might even not understand the appeal (attraction towards same gender) but they don't care who others like.

You had just a handful saying they were against it. Mostly because they didn't like homosexuality, and one because he was concerned about low birthrates, which was remarkable. I also think in Japan religion plays less of a role in this question than it does in the USA, where religion is the single most important reason for people to make a decision against same sex marriage. This is important to keep in mind when it comes to the differences between Japanese culture and American culture.

@@vr4n4 Yeah, I had the same thought. I don't think there's any openly gay Japanese people thinking "Oh, I can't marry my partner, so I guess I'll leave them and enter into a heterosexual marriage to make babies." Also, that guy apparently doesn't realize that gay people can also have children.

@@MsBabbi There are also other things you need to consider, it may be nice to talk in a perfect world; however, people don't work that way in real life. Children that are not yours are less loved than children that are. A child "ideally" needs a mother and father role, there's a higher chance of corruption if they're missing one. Of course, a bad heterosexual couple is worse than a good homosexual couple. It just shows that it can't be summarised so simply. Life isn't simple. By describing it so simply is the reason why debates will never end as people have different capacities to process complex and simple matters.

miju latza it’s not like being gay is some disease, there’s probably less than 10% of the whole population that’s gay. The LGBTQ+ fight for their right to even exist, and every homophobe has the convenient argument that “because gay people exist, we’ll have less children”, when we just want the right to be treated fair and not get called slurs. Plus, it’s not like there aren’t already 10’s of thousands of teenage pregnancies happening. We’re just fighting for our rights, and the breeders are just blaming us for the lack of “children being brought into the world” (P.S- I am writing this at 1:50 AM, I’m just tired and wanted to make a point, sorry if this was a rant, didn’t mean to insult you in any way possible)

@@thatdude7138 yeah, plus, to the people who say gays are gross and shouldn't exist because of the fact they "can't" have kids are just... stupid. Like okay, even so, at the end of the day, we're still gay, whether or not we'll be able to get married. Its not like we'll magically turn straight and want a crotch goblin the moment same sex marriage is banned :/ besides, there are tons of straight couples who don't want kids or are sterile, so it just doesn't make sense. Their arguments usually lack common sense

@@kimetsunoacademia3528 I think it's a bit ignorant to assume all people who *abandon their child* do it by choice. Some women die during childbirth, or get pregnant young and feel they can't take care of it, so they give it up for adoption if abortion isn't an option. A lot of these orphans come from third world countries where mothers are less equipped to deal with them, then there's other factors like rape etc. Also there's things like disease and famine, so the parents may die before the kid's even a toddler. Don't blame those people because it isn't always their fault. What we should be doing is encouraging adoption and putting children in safe foster homes.
