I use a unique layout for HOSAS + Pedals: Right stick Y: pitch Right stick X: yaw Pedals: Roll Left stick X: strafe forward/back Left stick Y: strafe up/down Left stick twist: strafe left/right It's not intuitive at first and took me a long time to get used to. But I like this layout because I have more precision on my strafe up, and throttle forward, than my strafe left/right, which I like. The second layout you mentioned, with throttle forward/back on the pedals, and roll on the twist, may be optimal though.

I had Thrustmaster X Hotas available to use when I first got star citizen. They worked good but were too sensitive when it came to light fighters, making non gimbaled weapons almost impossible to use. I ended up buying two VKB Gladiators when they were on sale. Wow, the controls are so much more precise. I still suck as a light fighter pilot, but I am slowly getting better, and I can actually target ships with them. I don’t have pedals, so I use the left stick rotation for up/down movement. I might buy the slanted adapter in the future so it feels more natural, and maybe pedals. Anyone on the fence with purchasing a stick over Keyboard and mouse, I’ll just say it increases the enjoyment of flying x10.

Awesome video! Great summary. I can definitely recommend joysticks over mouse. The only issue is super-precise aiming for me. As in tracking a pixel-sized enemy that i moving diagonally. I started with Thrustmaster T Flight X Hotas. It was great, but very soon it became clear that I need more accuracy. Plus I needed something sturdier. I went all in and bought Hotas Warthog. It was a huge step up, but soon I found myself lacking axes and controls on the throttle weren't exactly intuitive (except forward and back). So I got myself cheap T Flight Rudder Pedals from Thrustmaster to get some more axes. They were horrible and broke within a week. So I knew I had to go for quality. Precision, movement, durability. I chose MFG as they were the most praised back then. (Had to wait 3/4 year for them...). The setup was getting better and better and finally I replaced the Warthog throttle with T16000M. I am very happy with it. I might upgrade to something more expensive later on, but I find the setup "complete". I have enough control so that my flying is not limited by hardware, only by my skill. A note why T16000M joystick is an excellent choice: It has magnetic tracking. Your deadzone won't degenerate because of overuse. Not as soon anyway. ;) And last note: Seats. Although they do look great and and feel great and increase the immersion by bother level, make sure you have a keyboard and mouse handy. Especially if you are using VR as well. Getting out of the VR chair every time you need to use a keyboard or a mouse is quite a nightmare. So if you're going for a chair, do make sure you have easy and comfortable access to the keyboard and mouse.

Understandable for someone coming from a flight or DCS style background. The logic for SC is based on 6DOF and yaw having the same authority as pitch for aiming the nose of the ship ( in conjunction with roll). Living on the same stick makes an aiming device, similar to having the u/d/l/r strafes on the left stick. In real flight of course, pitch and roll are the primary aiming tools and you don't have mav thrusters to micro aim with strafes.

Another alternative is a 3D mouse, which is basically a joystick with all 6dof on the same hand. I'm fascinated by the fact that no one on this planet seems to use what I find feels most natural. HOTAS (x52 Pro), throttle controls forward & reverse, left index finger mini-joystick controls strafe U D L R, stick forward/back = pitch, stick left/right = roll, stick twist = yaw. Just makes sense to me coming from other flight sims and conventional atmospheric flight. This was a great video, and I'm happy you made it. Hope it helps some folks!
@amadouderza58242 жыл бұрын
Ultimately it's very personnal. I spent a lot of time testing different setups. Dual sticks, where twist on the right is yaw, x is roll, and the inverse. Left twist as up/down. Left twist as throttle (with an omnithrottle conversion so the stick is almost horizontal). rudder pedals for yaw. rudder pedals for roll. rudder pedals for thrust. I settled after months of practice for racing pedals for forward/backward (gas pedal is forward, cluch pedal is back). y on left is up down and x is lateral. yaw on right x. As elegant as x=roll, z= yaw (because it's like airplanes controls, and also because the hand movement mimics the ship's), rolling and pitching in space is just slower than yawing in SC, and yawing with z is both less precise and straining on the wrist. Of course it also depends on what you fly, but for fast, light fighter, it's better imo. I'll see how planes behave in atmo when the control surfaces are in, but I might just swap roll/yaw depending on atmo/space flight

Good short and concise video! You speak very well!!! HOTASAS from the Virpil line. Its a little over kill, but when you just casually running around the verse, the throttle shines in that you do not have to hold a stick in position. I have a set of pedals that I would like to use in place of the twists, but with SC's limit to only being able to adjust the curves and other settings on the first 4 inputs, and SC doesn't allow more than one input on an action, so I can't get things to work nicely. SC uses the order in which Windows recognizes controls. With the pedals active my throttle gets pushed to input 5. Hoping they give us binding options much like DCS soon. I have found folks who have trouble using twist for roll, it has to do with being used to flight sims. Also folks who are new to sticks with SC, often get a little messed up when they try to do the same when moving it into flight sims.

I keep a throttle panel for similar reasons. A lot of us use Joystick Gremlin in combination with Vjoy and a tool called hidhide to hide multiple sticks from SC and just present 2 Vjoy devices. I've put some guides together on it here kzbin.info/aero/PLorfwq-uIpBFF15CjrHtnwMqYDRrDr7ZA

@@RedLir_Live Thank you for that! I'm gonna check it out. I do actually have 5 Virpil inputs actively working in SC. Currently input 5 is a button panel so no issues. But the pedals fall into the middle and push a couple down the list. As I said the throttle gets pushed to 5, then I lose the ability to adjust DZ's and curves. I tried Gremlin in the past to get some odd things I wanted working, but found it overly complicated to just KB bindings to buttons. I found a much simpler software from a DCS member called RS Mapper that works very sufficient. It also does not require VJoy. Its nice to find a CC that understands and discusses with the community the complexities of inputs for SC. I have run across many who were ready to rage smash the controller and or game in frustration. Remember when Windows liked to reshuffle your input order #. Oh dang the pains of that in SC. Its rare now, but it did happen to me last December when 3.16 dropped with a keybind wipe.

odd side note pertaining to the t.16k's: due to the position of the magnetic sensor they use, if you live in an environment with iron rich soil, the magnet will accumulate ferrous material over time, which will start throwing phantom inputs, but fixing it is as simple as opening up the stick and cleaning the magnet, although it's better to just order the VKB sticks as your entry level purchase, cause they're superior in every measurable capacity.

The problem i encountered long ago was being able to transition smoothly from flight to on foot, and as DCS player my throttle and stick are set up in such a way that this made it very difficult to move to on foot, hence i made a custom controller for my left hand that has a analogue joystick as well as 15 keys and a pov hat, and mouse for my right hand thus enabling me to be in the same configuration always and being able to seamlessly switch from flight to on foot to vehicle, takes a little time to build the muscle memory but now its very intuitive for me.

@@RedLir_Live i know! But VKB makes it different! Y-Axis is a Throttle (without springs) and the X-Axis is the the optional Strafe Axis with springs! So you can handle it like a classical Throttle but you can use X and Z-Axis for strafing! And there is no conflict between and feels simply awesome!

I glued some short little tubes to the joysticks on an old PS4 controller..I use the sticks as, well sticks with my thumb and forefinger/middle finger, left bumper is my modifier with my ring finger, the triggers are my foot pedals/strafe with my pinkies, d-pad is ship controls like landing gear...It's a little on the tight side but it saved me from having to buy a whole new setup right away.

Yes...flying ships with dual sticks is far more intuitive than a mouse.
@calybri12142 жыл бұрын
You'd be surprised. It really is much easier imo.
@Suranfox2 жыл бұрын
For heavy cargo ships in tight spaces as opposed to combat in light fighters, the combination of a 6 degrees of freedom Spacemouse/Spacepilot/... and a throttle works very well. You have independent control of all 3 strafe directions, all 3 roll direction, speed and acceleration. Assigning one button on the throttle to cruise mode makes for a nice transition between landing and flying.
@RedLir_Live2 жыл бұрын
Yup, it's a good combo. I keep a throttle panel off to the side for that as well!
@MrSolLeks2 жыл бұрын
@@RedLir_Live do you think the throttle itself is useful if your doing HOSAS? I keep eyeing the virpil throttle but I am running dual sticks and just ordered a set of pedels because i'm finding I don't quite like strafe up/down and roll on the twists. probably going to do a very similar mapping to yours. already have a set of connie alphas, tobbii and the pedels are the ace full foot. I do have a x52 I can use the throttle from if I need it, but that virpil one looks so good man...
@RedLir_Live2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSolLeks I mean it's a 'nice to have' for big ships but definitely not needed. I'd say just use the one you have on the side of your HOSAS to supplement. If you find you REALLY like it, then you can always upgrade.

I do have a virpil hotas with pedals and i find it very hard to control my ship if i use the pedals for rolling. On the other hand binding yaw to them feels more natural and has an easier learning curve. Pedals are not meant for rolling imo.
@RedLir_Live2 жыл бұрын
I'm the exact opposite, but that's what great about having all these tools and options. There's something that works for everyone! Cheers!
@doctorno39122 жыл бұрын
Yeap, imo pedals are not suitable for roll and are a waste on a $200 peripheral. I use mine like one would on a car. I find it much easier to match the speed of my opponent.
@lordfraybin2 жыл бұрын
Try the toe brakes as forward / back strafe. Similar to a car, we drive every day. Dont use the center axis at all. Warning - do NOT bind any 1 axis to more than 1 input. Example - roll on both stick and pedals. The game lags when switching between them.
@Silverbolt19812 жыл бұрын

I swapped the the roll to the left for my preferences. I like to separate it from the pitch and yaw and then the strafe up\down has a rather large dead zone on the right stick since I don't use it much accept during landing take off.

Currently running dual t16kms and Virpil Interceptor pedals, with gameglass and tobii5 atm. I'm looking into upgrading the sticks to a premium set. More important is getting the ergonomics right, I think. I'm toying with mounting the second stick like a collective.

@@RedLir_Live Certainly worth keeping an eye on ebay for the higher end stuff; Virpil have an outlet store front and also most people that buy the higher end stuff look after it really well so there isn't so much of that worry of buying used. I use the Logitech X58 HOTAS, It has enough buttons and switches that I generally only touch the keyboard while on foot or EVA, both the throttle and the stick have analogue mini-sticks, my controls have the right hand X and Y set to Roll and Pitch, the twist is set to Yaw, mini stick is my head movement, for the left hand, the throttle is 0-100 forward, with a thumb button for reverse thrust, and the mini-stick is up-down, left-right. I might consider throwing my flight pedals into the mix, but we will see

Using the right stick left right to yaw sounds like madness to someone coming from a long history of flight swimming. Roll being left and right and either twist or pedals for yaw will make for a much easier transition for people used to that control style

Even if joysticks don't make you a PvP PGM, it really makes the experience more immersive and increases a bit the manoeuverability versus keyboard/mouse (personal feeling here). But what I love most is the pedals, that really improves the experience over just 2 joysticks.
