I was just ranting about this on Twitter. Right now. Twice’s More & More was a devastating era in terms of singing quality. Of all the promotional stages, the ONLY ONE that didn’t have pre-recorded vocals was the one with red outfits, and honestly, it was disappointing. However, it’s all the company’s fault. JYP consciously sacrificed live vocals over choreography and I will never forgive their production team for that. Being musicians, the priority should be that idols are ABLE TO PERFORM their art. The girls can sing live. Take Yes or Yes era, for example. PURE GOLD. They’re amazing, we all know it. But HELL it annoys me when hardcore fans won’t point out their faves’ weaknesses. I don't mind idols not singing perfect, I would rather hear mild backing vocals with their raw singing than a perfect pre-recorded vocal performance. That's why I love 2NE1 and always has, because they focused on singing live and giving a raw performance. I don't mind a lot of playback either if the idols sing live as well with that, their effort is worth it even if they have help, but to completely lipsync, that is just not exciting, that's not why I watch them live, might as well watch their MV.

@@missykami Exactly, it's kind of removing a big part of that intimacy you feel when you see idols live, to not even hear their voice then and there takes away a lot of that experience. I'm a hardcore Once and even I was a little disappointed during More & More promotions, because no stage as I remember was live. When on the other hand my fav stages of them are where they sing live, and they don't sound perfect but to me very good. DTNA on MusicBank hits different than Mnet if you know what I mean. Yes it definitively sets a new standard, but I hope it will become more popular again to be more raw, we have already seen old trends come back so it probably will as times changes, just like with everything else.

A lot of kpop stans use stability while dancing to measure idols' talent but this really doesn't make sense to me As a performer myself I know that even professionally trained performers on broadway and west end use playback so the ensemble sounds better, because we have to sing and dance at the same time. It's a lot easier for a big group to sing and dance at the same time and we still use extra help. In Heathers, for "candy store" there are 3 main singers on stage and each girl has 2 other people singing with her back stage. In Phantom of the Opera, half of the main song isn't even performed live and Christine's final note is lip synced in every single show.

I have so much respect for MAMAMOO for singing live and singer-songwriter type of artists. Talent and vocal training should not be taken lightly and the ability and write and take part in song production. For others who are saying they are okay if idols lip sync, it's because they are idols, it's for your eyes only imo. If they lipsync the whole song all the time, shouldn't they just be called dancers/dancing machines? There are artist and group of artists who are very stable in singing and dancing at the same time (probably not the craziest choreography) and that only means they care about singing and doing it live because of their love for their own music.

It would be cool if K-Pop Idols did what DREAMCATCHER does where they record themselves completely raw and sitting down. I would love to hear more idols do that then having their voice tinkered with.

They also sing live a lot. In most DC performances the choreo is intense so they sing what they can, which I think is better than heavy editing. And then theres breaks from the choreo to give them a chance to breathe like in BOCA. And they openly discuss it too, like Dami talking about how Black or White was hard because of the choreo and her long rap combined. And I remember Sua once said that they were professionals and thats why they sing live with a backing track. They only fully lipsync at maybe the first promotion of a song.

@@dreamywhales I know. I’m more saying that I wish that idols have raw singing videos like Dreamcatcher does without the dancing. Sadly 99% of the live singing is usually tinkered with in the live comeback stages which isn’t the groups fault. It doesn’t mean that they don’t sing live but they just have their voices processed like Dreamcatcher to bigger groups like BTS. However, usually you do need to have some experience in singing to have your vocals processed without it sounding off unless the producer is top tier

when i saw bts at wembley last june i was really happy because there was barely any playback, for some of the more intense songs there was some really quiet but you could only just about hear it if they stopped singing. and for tear, the truth untold and others there was zero that i could hear. I was expecting this because bts are really good at singing live imo (not that i know loads abt singing so dont quote me!) but it was good to confirm it irl haha

Yes! I went too and that's exactly what I felt too. Jimin especially was ill so his voice sounded a little different and I felt like you could 100% tell that he was singing live. They all did a great job, they sounded great but also definitely not studio level.

I totally agree. It's what bts do as well. Especially the rappers. Except when it's a dance riff, or a dance solo. Which I think is fair, because the main focus is in the dancing. It's also true that stability doesn't equal good singing. I'm sure Whitney housten wouldn't have sung like she did while doing choreo either. But it is a skill. For instance, jungkook is very stable. Hence, he is usually center for the powerful chorus. Wheares someone like jimin is much less stable. Still a good singer. But much less stable. So be is less likely to sing while dancing hard.

Is there any proof that they do? They've constantly provide that they don't lip sync with yoongi proving it on stage. The vocal line (and rap line) are always playing with the vocals, you can hear the change when they adjust their mic and when they breathe, and especially the rappers changing their mic positions and movements. Im no musical expert but there are others who have explained this very well. Besides these, where there was proof of other idols lip-syncing (shown on an award show(?) line up) BTS was still written to be live singing. Genuine question because I really think they genuinely sing live

Or, at least, his actual singing is so turned down, you can't hear it. That's totally fine to me. As for award shows, and stuff, unless it's a dance riff, or there are vocal effects, or it's an intro, they sing live. I would say always, but I, unfortunaly, haven't seen all their award shows. Bts are amazing. I love a good live stage. I actually can't stand watching one if the vocals aren't live. And bts is one of the few groups who are so consistent with it. I can only name a few others who are (like, infinite, ateez)

I think netizens have contributed a lot to the push for more lipsyncing. Idols are scared to be bashed for unstable vocals when they're literally doing complex choreography while singing challenging songs. I think lipsyncing and backing vocals are fine, as long as it's used in moderation. For example, concerts aren't really a good place to use a lot of lipsyncing. But if you think how much these idols are doing at concerts, yeah they'll need to lipsync a bit. It's exhausting and rough on your voice. As far as music shows, I think it's finding which shows don't use it as much as others. I feel it's been a lot less prevalent lately on music shows since there isn't really an audience.

I don't know if you'll see this, but another example of a good playback track to fool you is BLACKPINK's HYLT. Their Inkigayo Stages were the exact same track on each day, and even Show! Music Core. Which is known for live singing. Yet It sounds so live.

I think it also has something with health because they sing so much they're performers if they sing too much it also isnt healthy for their vocal chords especially if theyre constantly on the go with no sleep etc Although thats not really the reason i think its just part of it, either way lip syncing on stage is completely normal in the music industry this is just my opinion i sing as well so thats just my guess

I like singing sometimes. But occasionally I send covers to friends. I can't edit anything, so whatever I send is my raw voice. B4 I use to get stressed and discouraged but now I realized it doesn't have to be perfect.

It's a shame that newer idols have a lot of their vocals covered over in performances now because we know how talented they must be to debut after years of training, and it's a shame their talents can't be showcased properly. It's a shame the Kpop industry is so focused on perfection... And using more difficult choreography also takes away the ability to hear them sing more.
