Well, not quite optimistic as you think actually...coz more and more Chinese parents are not sending their kids to Chinese school, neither speaking Mandarin or family dialects with them at home. Meanwhile statistics show that increasing % of non Chinese kids are enrolling in the Chinese primary schools...seems it's already reached 20%. And considering the Chinese population is progressively decreasing, not to mention many Chinese families are also emmigarting overseas...so it won't be surprising that one day soon...perhaps more than half of the students in Chinese primarily schools are non Chinese. 😓 Should we be concerned?

If you had interviewed Indians then they may speak Tamil other South Indian languages, Punjabi, Bengali or Hindi. There is a lot of Sanskrit underpinning the Malay language and the rest of South East Asia because of ancient Indian influence which in the case of Thailand and Indonesia is civilizational. Do some historical research and relook the geography and you'll see where it all is .
So people in Penang mostly speak chinese varities + malay and english, (must be the same other chinese populated areas like Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Singapore, etc). But about the malay people or tamil people in Malaysia, what language do they know ???🤔

Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, etc, are LANGUAGES. They are not DIALECTS. The speak Mandarin campaign in singapore during the 70's labeled these languages as dialects in order to try and push them to extinction. Sadly, in singapore, only the older generation can speak these cultural languages and the young people mainly speak Singlish and an alright level of Putonghua. In malaysia, these same languages are dying too, in fact Mandarin is replacing it all amongst the chinese population. In fact, the chinese population of malaysia is decreasing and will only continue to decrease until the inevitable, the day when malaysia is no longer a multicultural society, but a religious, extremist and homogenous Malay state.
