Well, not quite optimistic as you think actually...coz more and more Chinese parents are not sending their kids to Chinese school, neither speaking Mandarin or family dialects with them at home. Meanwhile statistics show that increasing % of non Chinese kids are enrolling in the Chinese primary schools...seems it's already reached 20%. And considering the Chinese population is progressively decreasing, not to mention many Chinese families are also emmigarting overseas...so it won't be surprising that one day soon...perhaps more than half of the students in Chinese primarily schools are non Chinese. 😓 Should we be concerned?

If you had interviewed Indians then they may speak Tamil other South Indian languages, Punjabi, Bengali or Hindi. There is a lot of Sanskrit underpinning the Malay language and the rest of South East Asia because of ancient Indian influence which in the case of Thailand and Indonesia is civilizational. Do some historical research and relook the geography and you'll see where it all is .

Unless you live in Japan, it is super difficult to get fluent in Japanese. I guess it really depends on what 'fluent' means to you. If conversational level is considered 'fluent', then that would still be impressive considering the fact that you speak 9 languages. Well done!

Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, etc, are LANGUAGES. They are not DIALECTS. The speak Mandarin campaign in singapore during the 70's labeled these languages as dialects in order to try and push them to extinction. Sadly, in singapore, only the older generation can speak these cultural languages and the young people mainly speak Singlish and an alright level of Putonghua. In malaysia, these same languages are dying too, in fact Mandarin is replacing it all amongst the chinese population. In fact, the chinese population of malaysia is decreasing and will only continue to decrease until the inevitable, the day when malaysia is no longer a multicultural society, but a religious, extremist and homogenous Malay state.

I would argue that the majority of Malaysians can only speak two languages, and only one fluently.

Yes, that is more true because more than 60% of the population is one race, Malay. And they don't feel a need to learn other languages. But most Malaysian Chinese and Indians can speak at least 3 and more languages (which include the dialects). At least, that's my observation.

@@csking6377 Nope, only around 57% are Malays. The other 12% are the Malaysian natives (Orang Asli, and the Sabah & Sarawak natives). Us natives are NOT Malay, understand? Sarawak has more than 27 ethnicities, while Sabah has 42 ethnicities, and the Malay ethnic is actually just a minority group, especially in Sabah. FYI, many of us Sabahans can speak at least 3 to 4 languages fluently: Malay, Mandarin, English & our own mother tongue. Another fun fact, many Sabahans go to Chinese school here in Sabah, even if we’re non Chinese, that’s why so many Sabahans know how to speak Mandarin fluently.

@@ld-n1648 That's nice to know. I just checked Wikipedia - 58% Malays. 70% of Malaysia are classified as Bumiputera. That means 12% are natives. And out of the 12% natives, the great majority are not multilingual like you. So I think that statistically, based on entire population of Malaysia, the statement that most speak only 1or 2 languages still have some truth. The video is about Malaysia, after all, not any particular state.

Chinese dialects are actually different languages, but Malay and Indonesian are actually two dialects of the same language,it is completely the opposite.

@@hamkaboo543 I dont think you understand the bigger picture. Right now, the whole world has the impression that Malaysia is a Chinese country. This is due to the population of Malaysians abroad, like Uncle Roger, Michelle Yeoh, Jimmy Choo, etc. They think Malaysia is just a typical Asian country when in reality, we have our uniqueness of diversity. People here look different from one another. This is also the reason why Westerners are always skip us. Right now, they have no idea about us, so we need to give them an impressive impression of our country’s diversity. We should not portray our country as solely Mongoloid people when, in reality, these people make up only 20% of the population.
