I discovered tonight that, if you want one of these telescopes in Britain, the VAT and other duties increase the estimated purchase price by £177. This makes it about £610, depending upon currency fluctuations and any other charges which can be added by the couriers. That's a lot to pay for 'free delivery'..

you sold me cuiv. selling my 2k rig and buying a seestar. ill use your link to buy it. yea.. sighs. my mount was over 1k. my camera was 300 bucks for a 585. guidecope was 350 with mini zwo. autofocuser another couple hundred. then actually add in a telescope. then you mess with nina, messing with guidance, mess with focus, mess with on and on. then you want something to cover it with outside or a roll off roof observatory and a pier. when for 500 bucks you could have almost the same photos. it just doesnt make sense really. this thing costs almost as much as pixin$ight. i mean. come on. i hope this little guy helps lower the prices on all these competitor products. it would help the consumer but im sure the manufacturers have a pure hate for this thing. it even does daytime photography. i jsut wish it had as nice of tracking as the dwarf. oh.. and soon it will do mosaics. hehe. oh yea. no more hauling out 40 pounds of gear to take some photos and plugin it all in.

This is so helpful, Cuiv! My Seestar finally arrived yesterday. I unboxed it before going to sleep and plugged in the charger. Coincidentally I watched Lukomatico's review/tutorial earlier in the day, and I bought at his Etsy store the filter holder, Bahtinov mask, and something he makes that you didn't mention, an S50 lens cover. I started in this hobby when I was in my late '40s. I'm now 73 and hope to have a good number of years left to enjoy this new technology. To save my back, I'm selling my CEM40 and buying an AM5. Having this S50 will enable me to share the night sky so much more easily with my children and grandchildren. Thank you again Cuiv for this video. I can't wait to begin photographing and experimenting. Cheers and all the best! So glad to be one of your patreon members. 😁 🔭 🌌 😁

I am in New Zealand and have been watching your channel ever since I became interested in this little gem. It arrived today and I can't wait to put it through it's paces. As I live 35 degrees south, I can see stuff that I could not see when I lived in the UK ( a long long time ago). The LMC and the SMC, Omega Centauri, M83 etc etc are high in the sky here at times, so I cannot wait to image them in the next few days. By the way, the main reason I bought it, was not astro' photography, but that I could once again do my super-nova patrols, I have an extensive catalog of galaxies as a reference, they were made specifically for this purpose by my friend Greg Thompson in Brisbane Australia. The maps are 40 years old but just as relevant as they were then. I was impressed how quickly the images showed stars down to 15th mag, and that made it a lot more cruisy than up a step ladder looking through the eyepiece of my 12 inch go-to dobbo.

When I decided to get into astrophotography I made the #1 mistake you should never make: Went out and bought about 15k worth of equipment. After about a year of being mired in the extremely complicated set-up, operation, post-processing, etc. I realized I'd lost my pure elation for star the hobby as it had been replaced with the many concerns that arise during an imaging session. Thank God ZWO created the Seestar! I love that I can set it up to image, then move to one of my other scopes and stargaze the night away! Later I send pics to the family/friends. Thanks for the helpful tips, I just ordered the filter bracket!

I saw your first video on the seestar and just felt your excitement about it. Now that I have had mine for just over a month, I don’t know that I am as excited about it. I’m a beginner astro person that still has tons to learn. I know there were some things I expected the seestar to not be great at because of price but I actually feel kind of disappointed about other things. I do wish the FOV was just a bit bigger but that wouldn’t be so much a problem if the camera could be rotated. I want to get the veil nebula but so often because FOV is same orientation it cuts off the nebula. I did enjoy using the seestar for the annular eclipse we had in the states a few weeks back. I was near the center line. Love the accessories you shared in the video. I did learn about the focus arrows on the left of the screen. I didn’t understand what they were for so thanks for that.

Tip: Many people will use a different tripod to get a higher viewpoint to clear walls or trees etc. Its vital that when the Seestar is attached to a different tripod it doesnt foul the base and prevent the Seestar from rotating, this could easily damage the motor and gearing. If you look under the Seestar when its on its tripod there's a 1-2mm gap to allow it to rotate/track.
@denodan
@denodan 11 ай бұрын
If you look under Seestar, the part that rotates is slightly razed so mot flat to the base, so should be fine

I got one finally a month ago. Within 10 hours of use the altitude spindle bearing went bad. Flopped laterally about 10 degrees. Nice pics while it worked. Got a replacement. The backlash in altitude is bad enough that after every dither step that moves away from tracking in altitude, several frames are lost due to star trails while the drive backlash gets taken up. I’ve alerted ZWO about that issue. It seems they might need to redesign the drive to either mechanically take up backlash (as with what you did for the AZ GTi in your excellent video), or else measure backlash and then take that up during slews and backlash. That might be a possible software/firmware fix. I suppose one could translate the sensor to accomplish dither, that’s what some cell phones do to decrease pattern noise when taking photos with track and stabilize. Anyway, once one has a good copy, the SeeStar S50 is great.❤

Cuiv, another informative video! Lukomatico sure has gotten out of the gate early with these accessories for the Seestar! Do you plan a video comparing using the filter add-on vs the onboard one? Also, a suggestion for these different lens accessories, how about using a camera cap leash type setup? Maybe stick a little hook on the side of the S50 and leash the accessory to it so if you do forget it's there it won't fall to the ground.

From ZWO's history, they've been pretty good about firmware update supported on all ASIAir for instance. I can't say for sure obviously, but the Seestar has the capability to do mosaics from a hardware perspective, so my guess is that ZWO would add it as a software update to current Seestars

Thank you for the informative videos on Seestar S50 I have some question on this device: 1. When I save all frames, does this device will have enough memory space? Let's say I want to be out in the field for about 6 hours: Does Seestar S50 have enough storage space to save all 6hours worth of frames? 2. So for the bahtinov mask, If I set up the focus at the beginning , am I good to go for the whole night without re adjustment? Even if I change objects?
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek 10 ай бұрын
1. I did so, and yes. 6 hours of 10s frames is just 2160 frames. Each frame is around 5MB. So total space taken would be around 11 GB, out of the 50+ available in the unit. The problem would be the battery life, but that's easily solved with an external battery. 2. Maybe, maybe not - if there are large changes of temperature, focus may change during the night. Changing objects though shouldn't matter

Hi Cuiv, is there (or will be) some stuff to put the S50 in equatorial mode, in a way similar to DwarfII, to avoid some field rotation? Thanks for your videos!!

Not at this stage! I don't think they're working on an équatorial mode at this time

Not yet, but I heard they're working on it (now whether it actually makes it into the software or not is another question)

The only issue I have with adding filters is not only are they 48mm, but the filter holders that push in also drop the aperture, so take a slight hit. Filters on top of filters is not a great idea, lose even more light and contrast. I bought my Seestar to have an aperture and use full aperture of 50mm, not 48mm or less, giving slightly less performance.

My wife has ordered this telescope, impatiently waiting on it. Has anyone found a way to image Saturn or Jupiter with it? Was told maybe a 2x lens with a 3d printed adapter may help. Or is this just something out of the range of this telescope?
@CuivTheLazyGeek

Maybe a 2x lens would help indeed, it still would be a pretty small image scale

I wouldn't buy this. This is basically a half finished throwaway starter scope. The review missed some glaring faults and software issues. For a complete beginner this scope is good enough, but anyone who knows anything about astro photography would outperform this with very little effort and similar optics/mount.
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek 6 ай бұрын
I disagree! Of course I can trounce this scope with a refractor + astro camera + mount + guiding. But it sure as heck won't be $500! And I don't think this scope is an astrophotography scope, it's an EAA scope - assisted visual effectively. What glaring faults and software issues are you referring to?
@blobrana8515
@blobrana8515 6 ай бұрын
@@CuivTheLazyGeek As a complete beginners scope it is ok. A pair of binoculars and an astronomy app is perhaps just as good for a beginner too. I don't want to list all the software issues and do your job for you. Others will probably make videos that will highlight them. One drawback just now is the small imaging chip which for example can't encompass the whole of the Pleiades cluster. But no doubt they will improve the chip and software in the future. Just now it is effectively a beta product. But we will see many others adopting this hybrid or automatic approach and these types of scopes will just get better and better.

To keep the filter sandwich from falling out you might want to try using black gaffers tape to secure it to the Seestar. It is formulated to minimize adhesive residue when removed. It is a basic staple for film crews so they don’t damage property and can be quickly removed. You know that filter wants to find its way to the ground.

Thank you Cuiv, very informative and well presented! I bought my first telescope in 1974 at 12 years old (Tasco 3'' reflector, not the best but gave me my first dates with the planets 😊, still got it by the way!), always had my head up peering at the stars, but since I lived most of my life in or near a big city, I did not invest in better equipment. The Seestar changes everything and will surely be my next step, I feel so lucky to have reached this technologically advanced era, giving me the possibility to relive the wonders of my childhood stargazing...🌃🌠

Something I'd like to see is a straight shoot-out between the Dwarf II and seestar s50; same settings or comparable, straight out of the two (no post-processing), everything as constant as possible over various DSO objects, from easy to insane. See what the numbers really add up to in resulting imagery.
