Hi Wido! I've watched many reviews of the Seestar. Cuiv did a very good one, others where also good, but your's is the best review of them all. I've bought the Vespera from Vaonis last December. It's very similar to the Seestar. It uses the same sencor, it also has an aperture of 50 mm and a focal length of 200 mm. But it's much more expansive, and you have to pay extra for a lot of stuff, that's already implemented into the Seestar. The ZWO Seestar is the superior scope with a much better price. I'm selling my Vespera and I'll buy a Seestar for Christmas. I really like these smart telescopes and I think, they are the future. I had so many failures with my standard rigg. Somtimes there's a software issue. Plate solving or guiding won't work. You put out your rigg and in the end you have gained nothing. I think everyone has experienced this in the past. I work in shifts. When I come home from the late shift after 11pm and I see there's a clear sky, I would never think of putting my standart rigg out there, cause it would take too much time to set everything up. But with a smart scope like the Seestar, you can still have some fun. You place it in your backyard and after a few minutes, the first pictures are rolling in. This is just the beginning . In a few years, you will be able to buy smart telescopes, where you can change the camera sencor or you can add a barlow lence to increase the focal lenght and you may be able to use them in an equatorial mode. I'm looking forward to this, cause it will make astronomy and astrophotography much more accessible to a lot of people.

150% agree. I have a Seestar and a Vanois Vespera. Originally for travel. My regular rig is a Esprit 100ED on a HEQ5 mount. ZWO Air+ running everything. Setup during the day. Wait for night. Start all the steps. Maybe 45 minutes later I can start imaging things. I really enjoy just plopping one of these down, ( I put one on the North side and one on the south side of my house,) and in minutes I am getting images.

Now I can't wait for the comparison...S50 vs. Dwarf II
@GenXMCraft
@GenXMCraft Жыл бұрын
I’ve seen one or two side by sides, the Seestar had better quality results imo…. more nuances captured. Seestar has less of a field of view, better for specific objects, where dwarf shows more. Both would be better if you could modify the FOV a bit. Dwarf not releasing iOS full featured was a poor strategy, but understandable. Dwarf can be mounted equatorial and that’s a huge advantage for tracking and stacking. Seestar app runs on Linux. 🤓
@pepponeskie
@pepponeskie Жыл бұрын
@@GenXMCraft I'm waiting for Wido or Cuiv to review these two since they have credibility as well. I saw one guy in Ytube saying he was approached by ZWo to review Seestar S50 but he declined, instead he just did the talking against Seestar S50 which IMO is a "She say, He say" thing and made him lost his credibility. Its hard to decide between the two and I know you can't get wrong whichever you pick.😎
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 11 ай бұрын
OK, I'll get on it as soon as the clouds are gone:-). They are actually two different animals. The DWARF ii is a wider field telezoom lens that in combination with the widefield lens is great as a spotting scope. It can also capture wider field objects like andromeda or ngc7000 in one picture. The Seestar is a full fledged apo 50/250mm refractor and gets better resolution images of the Sun and Moon. But the FOV is limited to about 1.3 x 0.7 degrees. Good for some targets worse on others. I do like the seestar APP design...in short, pros and cons. It depends on your personal preferences. Cheers!

What a great review Wido! Nice and detailed and clearly presented. If I was starting out in Astrophotography for deep space, I would definitely start with this unit. Thinking a bit more, I may get one anyway as my job has me traveling to various locations in Western USA some of which are remote and on hills/mountains. The portability and quick set up of the Seestar would make it pretty easy to pack and take on these trips.

I would suggest them multiday project that would stack the same object with the same field of view and rotation. Multi-night project with many targets, that would be optimized for each target. 1.5h for each target...

Excellent video! Picked up some nice tips in addition to being an in depth review. I've viewed numerous reviews of the Seestar S50 and there is still one thing lacking I'd like to see. ALL the reviews tend to show what one can achieve with relatively short total imaging times (1/2 to 3 hours). I'd like to see what's possible with 8-12 hour sessions on a single target or even stacking images from multiple nights.

Yes, that's the point of a smart telescope. Alternatives in this price range would be the Dwarf II Smart Telescope (see my comparison video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4WudpSje5mYf9k) or a good quality star tracker with a DSLR camera (check: astroforumspace.com/best-star-trackers-for-astrophotography-in-2023/). Just wondering why the price disparity. In the US it's $499, in Europe it's €799 this is a huge difference. I'm used to prices being a little different but this is a vast difference. Wonder what the justification for this is, as the unit isn't produced in the US. Disappointing

I understand that this is a telescope and not a surveying instrument. However I'm curious how close to a theodolite function it could get, given that it can take daylight images, and it has an optical angular resolution of 2.39 arcseconds per pixel, and apparently has fine control of elevation and azimuth. It must measure its pointing angles internally, to implement a goto function to find astronomical targets, but does it report the actual AZ/EL angular position as metadata in saved image frames, and if so to what resolution? Maybe it isn't so great, if it always needs to do an additional "plate solving" step to refine the actual position of the scope to center a given target on the sky?

Thinking of getting this for the 2024 solar eclipse. I see a problem if you want to take a continuous video of, let's say the final 10 seconds before totality and then into total. However I'm wondering if you can get rid of the solar filter when the sun is total?
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 11 ай бұрын
You could, just gently remove the filter and you should be fine.

Are you sure these images are processed through the lens? And not out of a database or so. Is it not fake? Its strange you cant take good shots of the planets.
@michalpetrilak3976
@michalpetrilak3976 27 күн бұрын
It's not fake, and the fact that they can't shoot planets is proof that it's authentic photography. Due to the focal length of the lens and the size of the pixels on the sensor chip, the image of the planets is too small, so it appears as a bright star with no detail.

None of the reviews I've seen discuss how the Seestar magnifies (digital upscaling? interpolation? optically?) or its magnification limits (10X? 100X? 200X?).
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace Жыл бұрын
None of that. It's a telescope. 250mm focal length and a 2.9 micrometer pixel size camera sensor will give you 2.39 arcseconds per pixel with a 2 megapixel resolution. It's not a camera with telezoom it's a genuine telescope with a fixed focal length.

It is excellent for capturing comets, here on YT there are many examples of how comets are captured. But it is inappropriate for the planets. The image of the planet projected through a 250 mm focal length lens onto a sensor with a pixel size of 2.9 micrometers is too small to show any detail.

I've watched several review videos. This is the best I've seen. I've ordered one (right at the end of ZWO's introductory pricing). I am hoping that I will have it by Christmas so my friends and family can see and maybe even use it. I have two very good telescopes but both are set up for astrophotography and really don't work for "outreach" to my family. In addition, I hope to use it for the 2024 total solar eclipse. I am hoping you or others my have some videos for using this scope for such imaging.

Wile I find this very cool, I am not a fan of all ap controlled devices of any kind. Its another thing to charge, another thing that might not be supported a few years from now. I am a experienced ameture astronomer and some other things that concerm me about this scope is a dew shield, or lack of one. Yes astrophotography is pricy, but I would actually just save up for a decent 80mm APO setup if you really wanted to do some high quality work on a budget.

Light pollution filters are still aimed at the sodium street lights we had thirty years ago. Unless you live in East Berlin, street lighting is now broadband white LED-based, and the pollution filter will be nothing like as useful as one would wish. Still a great telescope though, and of course once the add-on lenses start to appear planetary photography will become possible. One simple feature that is missing, and should be added is a standard filter thread for the front aperture. The solar filter could use this for a bit more security of fixing. And one more again - more megapixels please. Sensors have improved massively since these were designed.
