I've never been affected by the whole "I like the old thing less because I hate the new thing" feeling, I dunno if that's just a personal thing. I dislike a lot of new Spongebob episodes but when I went back to watch old Spongebob, I had a blast and remembered why I loved the show so much, and it urged me to seek out the best of the newer episodes.

I'd actually like to see a lampshade episode where the characters notice their lack of continuity, whether it's metaphoric and they end up in a replica of Bikini Bottom where no one recognizes their previous antics, or literally stating that no one remembers something that one character knows and Sandy or another character tries to figure out why.

I've had similar thoughts with The Great Snail Race. Yeah I know it's one of the least liked Pre-film episodes. I know you yourself consider it a Scumbob Episode and Mr. Enter considers it an Animated Atrocity. But I really like that episode. but I'd be lying if I said it didn't have problems. but I think what some people really hate about it is when you look at an episode like oh say A Pal for Gary, and then you look at The Great Snail Race. Yeah that could have the same kind of effect that you were mentioning.
@jlwebster9
@jlwebster9 9 жыл бұрын
+Dan Gurney Spongebob mistreats Gary in both episodes, but in the snail race he eventually sees what he's done and legitimately feels bad. He stops caring about the race and runs to Gary to make sure he's ok. Sure it took him a long time to see his error, but I still consider it a good episode though I can see why lots of people hate it. I also love how Squidward is smug and condescending the whole episode and Patrick wins the race with his rock. Even if the cruelty in the episode is a bit much, I think the comedy makes up for it.

On a separate note, I really don't get the criticism "I'm With Stupid" gets, especially when there is another classic episode where Patrick is even more of an asshole. I'm talking about "Dumped". I hate this episode- I hated this episode even as a kid- and I don't get why people don't immediately notice how mean and harsh this episode is. At least with "I'm With Stupid", you could argue that Patrick, being as dumb as he is, simply forgot about the plan and really did think that Spongebob was really stupid; that was actually the joke. And it's not like the episode is really offensive, and it's not like Spongebob was brutally tortured; he just got frustrated and that was funny to watch. Some people (like Mr. Enter) take the episode way too seriously. He even said that while some people find the twist ending funny, he just found it disturbing. Mr. Enter took this episode way too seriously, and since people seem to just blindly follow his opinion, the episode is now universally hated, it seems. "Dumped", on the other hand, has Patrick being maliciously cruel and unsympathetic to Spongebob's plight. Patrick literally steals his best friend's beloved pet away from him, and shows no remorse. That scene where Spongebob finally breaks down, sobbing and pleading for Gary to come home, is simply heartbreaking and infuriating to watch because Spongebob is literally having a complete meltdown, and all Patrick can do is vacantly stare at him disapprovingly and subsequently lecture him about how "he needs to stop living in the past". To me, "Dumped" is the quintessential "Patrick's-A-Prick" episode, and I'm astonished that no one ever brings it up.

+RyanX1231 In my opinion, Season 2 was not a very flattering season to Patrick. Although that season is generally good, it still had a handful of moments where Patrick really was a git. In addition to I'm with Stupid and Dumped, The Secret Box and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III are examples of Patrick hurting an episode.

The problem with the show is not really a product of the show itself but of Nickelodeon’s greed. This show made the network A LOT of money. Spongebob as a character has become as iconic as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. I have said it many times and I will say it again here, Nickelodeon would cease to exist as a network if Spongebob were to disappear. The network has pinned its entire reason for being on this show so much so that they have completely ruined Stephen Hillenburg’s legacy. He was very clear that he never wanted a spin-off, let a lone 2 (for now) of the show. Once he got too sick to make any significant decisions about the show he becomes marginalized and made so ineffectual that his decisions didn’t matter anymore. It also didn’t help that Nickelodeon at this time hired the absolute wrong person to be its president. In 2018 they hired Brian Robbins of Head of Class and Tollin/Robins Productions (All That, Kenan & Kel) fame. He was tasked with making the network even more profitable than it was up until that point. I also saw his hiring as the beginning of a big negative shift the network took. With its live action shows it became almost like a clone of The Disney Channel and that’s not a good comparison. With the exception of the Nicktoons already on the network at the time, they created very few new ones and the ones they did create (The Casagrandes notwithstanding as it is a decent spinoff of a pretty good parent show) we’re really bad. Almost immediately they start taking about spinning off Soongebob into what became Kamp Koral. I know the timeline here is a bit sketchy at best but just the idea that these things were being discussed shows the network could care less about an executive’s legacy or their wishes. I’m very surprised Hillenburg’s family didn’t at least attempt to sue the network after his death to prevent both Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show from ever seeing the light of day. Brian Robbins should have known better. I was very intrigued when it was announced he was helming the network. He had spent many years as a network producer working with perhaps the biggest name on the network (Dan Schneider to be exact and this is just a statement of fact and has nothing to do with how I feel about him knowing what I know now) and did so during the golden age of the network. Surely he would know the best ways to keep the network competitive and reel in the children of people who grew up with the network in the 90’s. He was there he saw what the network used to be and yet he has sunk the network to a place I don’t think it can return from. I have seen at least one episode each of Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show and if I were Hillenburg’s family I would be lawyering up as we speak. Money makes people do such stupid things. I know Paul Tibbits came out seething about these spin-offs when they were announced. I wonder how he feels about the show still being on 22 years later. Clearly he isn’t pushing for it to formally end since as far as I know he’s still show runner or something high level like that. However, he can’t be happy with the quality of the show. There are a few great episodes in the recent years (I’m looking at you “Mind The Gap” which could have been an episode in season 3 or 4 and been just as fantastic) but the large majority are not very good. I don’t necessarily think they take anything away from the classic episodes. If anything I have an even greater appreciation for the classic episodes (I don’t count season 4 as part of the classic era since I personally noticed a jarring difference between season 3 and 4 starting with the quality of Spongebob’s voice). These classic episode to me show a masterclass in animation and cartoon slapstick comedy. Had the show ended with the release of the first movie like Hillenburg intended, the show would go down in history as one of the best cartoons of its generations. Instead it has suffered the same cash grab fate as The Simpsons and Family Guy. It has overstayed its welcome and therefore has become a diluted and pale imitation of its former self.

While watching this vlog, I opened up a second tab and played that one sad theme from the classic episodes. Remember that one newer one where Mrs. Puff gets a job at the Krusty Krab and asks Mr. Krabs if he wants to date her, and he just turns her down rudely? That was so sad and such a slap to Krusty Love's face :(I still have hope, though. I think SpongeBob has a chance for one last great moment to sort of "redeem" its "sins".

Most of the older ones will never be tainted by the newer ones for me. I have been hesitant to watch some older episodes like "I'm With Stupid" and "Dumped" because they share aspects of some scumbob episodes, but haven't really made a judgement on those yet. Classic Squidward torture episodes are fine though because I know that his treatment is just, compared to something like "Choir Boys" or "Squid's Visit".

Out of every video of yours I've watched, I think this one was the one you seemed closest to swearing; That rant about Patrick seemed really personal, and I think it's the route everyone's taking, as the character slowly spirals downhill. It makes sense; but, thinking back, some episodes I didn't like as much became better actually, considering the newer episodes. Watching Good neighbors will put me in an annoyed state, but afterwards, watching Can you Spare a Dime feels like a perfect inclusion of catharsis, as well as providing fantastic comedy and even character reversal; spongebob gets legitamately annoyed in that episode, which is a nice pace change and it's all done for laughs. A while ago, I hopped spongebob would just end; but now, I feel like they owe it to the older seasons to at least attempt redemption for a final hurrah; if season 9 is applying that, like some people claim it is, perhaps there's hope yet for the roller coaster that is spongebob to end nicely...

this happened to me with the TV show Dexter. seasons 1-2 were near perfect television. everything that follows ranges from really good (season 4) to some of the most disappointing TV. the show goes on a downward spiral losing its original themes and gripping story telling. makes it tough to even watch those first couple seasons even though season 2s end is a perfect series ending. the fact that there IS more and it goes the way it does doesn't leave my mind. I still consider it great TV just hard to revisit for now, maybe with more time. I think when sponge Bob goes off the air it'll be easier to just like the first few seasons.

I respectfully disagree. I feel as though the older better episodes can make me think less of the newer scummier ones, but not the other way around. There are many shows that I like that went through seasonal rot. My solution is to simply ignore newer episodes that I don't like because, in the the real world, those episodes were made later. I view bad cartoon episodes of shows I enjoy almost as fanfiction. It's great if I enjoy a newer episode, but if I don't I can just ignore it. I do the same with the Star Wars prequels. If anything, newer, worse episodes make me appreciate the originals even more.

You seem exasperated with Spongebob (can't say I blame ya). ^^ It would be interesting if you tackled the opposite side of this topic. Do the older episodes affect the quality of the newer ones? Do we think some crappy newer episodes are better than they are just because they aren't nearly as crappy as the other newer ones? I know we already sort of hashed this out once in the comments but it would be neat to see your thoughts presented in a Square Theory.

personally I feel that the new episodes haven't taken anything away from the old episodes at all, and perhaps some of that is because at some point I began to think of 'old spongebob' and 'new spongebob' as sort of separate entities, when I see a new episode come on that I haven't seen before, I sort of come in with the 'past' of newer spongebob episodes in mind, and worse expectations, and of course there aren't any old ones I haven't seen, but if there were, I'd probably go in with more positive and open expectations, considering the 'past' of older episodes, and maybe that's unfair or something, but I'm pretty sure that's how I'd go about it

I try not to let my opinions on newer episodes affect how much I love the older episodes. I just let these episodes exist in their own separate vacuums. Also, I sort of just convince myself that the original seasons (1-3) was the original show, which ended in 2004 with the movie, and that the newer episodes (2005-present) are just a reboot of the original show. I don't see the two categories as the same show, because it's really not. When the show got uncancelled, the creator had left (sort of), new writers were brought in, and the art style and character models were changed slightly. So to me, it's like a less extreme version of Teen Titans Go: It's a sub-par reboot of a classic show that I loved, and it's horrible, but I'm not going to let that affect my love for the original, because I know that it's not the same show. To me, the original Spongebob ended in 2004, like it was supposed to. Future episodes I just consider to be a part of a sub-par reboot. That's why I don't get the backlash certain older episodes are getting nowadays. That being said, I do kind of wish Spongebob would just die, figuratively speaking, so that we can finally talk about how great it was. But there will come a day when Spongebob will end, and no matter how poor the quality of newer episodes were, I will still be very sad when it does end; even if it is long overdue.

I watched Dunces and Dragons on the way to work this morning, and had vitriol towards S & P's behavior that is commonplace post-movie, as, thanks to these videos, I realized that I've seen a majority of episodes up to Season 6 on my own, but more than that, realizing how much I sat there with later seasons when they first aired, just NOT laughing. Not just not even being amused, but sticking with it because "How can Spongebob be bad?" I can at least say that, like you with Spongehenge, I was able to acknowledge at some point back when I watched SB consistently, but unlike you, it was only because I stopped watching TV in favor of the internet and never cared to look into SB after whenever I stopped, not because a specific episode doing me in. Although, my continued, well, blind support of SB, is a bit justified in how my life around season 6 required me to have a thicker skin, to where bad SB either didn't faze me in the grand scheme of things, or, compared to what I was dealing with, still managed to be enjoyable/ease my greater pains.

I almost rage quit the show after I saw the episode “Pet or Pests.” That to me symbolizes the worst this show has to offer. The gross up close ups of the worms alone make me want to hurl and the plot is inane at best. It infuriated me how Spongebob and Patrick could in any sane universe think the mother worm or any of her babies were cute. I continued to watch the show well after this episode because I was such a super fan of the first 3 seasons that I couldn’t believe my beloved show had stooped this low. I will admit there were much better episodes in later seasons as season 6 was considered to be the worst season of the show ever made but my passion for the show has long since died.

Honestly, the newer episodes don't influence how I feel about the older ones, and honestly, it's because I know there was a shift, I can tell the writing's different and I don't see them in the same light as the newer ones. I can still watch all the old ones just fine, because the shit that pisses me off in the new ones isn't present in the older ones.

I am watching Seinfeld now. Having watched all of Frasier, The Big Bang Theory, This Is Us, The Office, Friends, and more. I must admit, I have struggled to see why this show has the rave reviews it does. It's like the Ready Salted flavour of crisps. The plain popcorn. But I guess it was the "first". After seeing all these other shows, Seinfeld just feels... not special in the slightest. Also, I watched Frasier without watching Cheers, the show that led to Frasier. Once I was done with Frasier, I tried to get into Cheers. It absolutely felt like a step down, or rather a step backwards.

New episodes don't affect the first three seasons for me at all. I recently watched the first three seasons a couple of months back completely having the thoughts of the later seasons and episodes out of my mind. Why? Because later seasons of SpongeBob is basically a different show, and the classics will always be a blast to watch whether you're a kid or teen or young adult. There are a few new ones that were good here and there, but to be fair, it should've ended after the third season.

I wouldn’t say you have to pretend like every season after the first three and the first movie, but just acknowledge that they were meant to be the entirety of the series, and judge the show based off of that.

When I first watched I'm With Stupid I still hated it, that was when it first aired. It was just so... mean spirited, and there's not even a resolution, spongebob just runs off in fury. It really stung, especially thinking that Spongebob and Patrick are supposed to be best friends. Patrick was just cringey in that episode, the way he acted made me uneasy, not even someone as stupid as patrick (and this was when patrick was a lot smarter) could completely forget the entire personality of his best friend and treat him as if he was just there to entertain him. Especially growing up and already having anxiety and trust issues this really made me scared that someone would actually do that.

A lot of cartoons lack continuity. Shows like Dexter's Laboratory and the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy have episodes that end with characters in a certain situation and then the next episode, everything is back to normal, sort of like a reset button. And my personal favorite: the Angry Beavers, also lacks a lot of continuity. Well, the first episode shows how their dam came to be, but there's lots of episodes in the Angry Beavers that have everything reset the following episode. In "Up All Night," they stay away a bazillion years, and they're in the present the next episode. In "Mission to the Big Hot Thingy" they block the Sun and send the world into a new Ice Age, but everything is reset in the next episode. Heck, two episodes, "What's Eating You?" and "All in the Colony" end with the whole world getting destroyed but the world is fine the episodes that follow. See? No continuity between episodes.

Did I hear eck cetera? T R I G G E R E D I think you're spot on with the entire episode PIEGUYRULZ and you highlighted a lot of interesting things about viewer fatigue that also shows the importance of watching shows from the very beginning in some cases. I can go back and watch South Park's pilot and know that it is pretty bad, but it was revolutionary for the time so you have to take historical relevance into account (like your point about Seinfeld). I'm new to the channel so I'm excited to see more of your opinions (and potentially share mine again) and catch up with your content!

Well.... Here's how I see it. I still find the majority of Seasons 1-3 (in terms of it's episodes) funny. I don't think the modern seasons truly tainted the old episodes (as in 1-3) because I like to call modern Spongebob Demonic Bob Scarpants so I don't associate the newer episodes with the older ones sorry man .:/ But yeah hell some of the newer episodes actually make me appreciate the older episodes (even the eh episodes) a hell of a lot more. I have what I call a reverse effect to me when I see something worse than what I saw sometimes it will make me appreciate the older episodes or anything a lot more and make me love the episodes more. Although I did get the Sienfield Unfunny effect from Family Guy. The new episode has fucking tainted the show so damn bad I don't even find the show that good anymore even the old episodes which I liked are fucking ruined and I don't find them that funny anymore. So yeah I like your video and you are a very intelligent KZbinr man because this was a good theory although I disagree with it. It's still a well made video good job Pieguy.:)

Quality of the older episodes don't necessarily become altered by the newer episodes, but merely our perception of the older episodes would be affected. I am well aware of some episodes of the show that we thought were great either didn't age well or weren't that great to begin with, but even with some of the really bad episodes from the newer seasons, they're nowhere near bad episode to ruin the older episodes for me, at least in my opinion. So, my answer would be no, their quality wouldn't be affected, but we would perceive them differently if we saw them today.
