I've always really liked Sandy. Having a Texan character is pretty cool and breaking the stereotype by making her smart was a very good move. I thought it was unusual why they flanderized her just to be a scientist. She had so many interesting traits such as her interest in extreme sports, karate, and Texas culture. You're exactly right, she has a lot of untapped potential.

If you ask for a SpongeBob Torture Porn after the events of episodes like Good Neighbors, Breath of Fresh Squidward, and Boating Buddies, you get episodes like The Splinter, Stuck in the Wringer, and Gone. If you ask for a Mr. Krabs Torture Porn, you get episodes like Pat No Pay or Accidents Will Happen. If you ask for a Patrick Torture Porn, you get Spongicus. If you ask for a Sandy Torture Porn, you get Someone's in the Kitchen With Sandy. PGR specifically says in his Why Do Some Squidward Torture Episodes Fail video that the key to making one of those episodes work is that Squidward has to be in the wrong for something, and it has to be entertaining to us, not brutal. That goes for any character torture porn. If you're going to get SpongeBob, catch him when he's stalking Squidward. If you're going to do Squidward, do it when he's being an ass. If you're going to do it to Patrick, do it when he's a prick. If you're going to do it to Sandy, get her when she's being unlikeable. If you're going to do it to Gary, you need to make him be a disrespectful pet. If you're going to get Mr. Krabs, do it when he's in his more evil character. Plankton, same thing. You get the idea.

+sakuraslicer19 Interesting idea, but I don't know if they could work as best friends. All of the characters' ages are ambiguous, though you do assume that they are adults in the traditional sense. Pearl, however, is written as the "annoying teenage girl" character. So I don't know how much common ground they could possibly have. Here's an idea, though: Team up Sandy and Ms. Puff. It doesn't even have to be a Boating School episode and it doesn't even have to involve Spongebob that much.

Maybe there could be an intergenerational friendship between Sandy and Pearl, with the latter being like the "cool big sis" figure to the former much like how Squidward and Mr. Krabs act as the big brother/father figure to SpongeBob and Patrick, in a way. Your idea isn't so bad, either. It also would be nice for Sandy and Mrs. Puff to have an episode together and not use the Boating School as an easy way out for the latter or something science-themed for the former. When was the last time Mrs. Puff even had a good episode that didn't involve driving and ending up in jail, or Sandy doing karate or something Texan? And it would be nice to not focus on SpongeBob for a bit, but do something better than Patrick in "Rise and Shine."

sakuraslicer19 Yeah, it was nice to see Ms. Puff and Mr. Krabs interact in "Krusty Love" without it being a typical Boating School episode. I'll be honest, I have always thought it was funny seeing Ms. Puff get arrested, but they really overuse it now, and considering how severe Spongebob's antics have gotten over the years, it's almost heartbreaking to see her constantly get arrested now. Curious how in "Demolition Doofus", she outright tries to MURDER Spongebob, and yet that was the one episode where she doesn't get arrested at the end. Maybe have an episode where Ms. Puff is in jail, once again, due to Spongebob's shenanigans, and she meets Sandy, who is also in jail for some reason (maybe the public nudity incident XD), and together they plot to escape, and they combine both of their talents. Okay, that wouldn't work. But I'm actually having trouble thinking of possible episode plots. XD

PieGuy makes a very good point; Sandy has had some episodes before and after this one where she interacts a lot with Squidward and Mr. Krabs, but I have not been paying close attention to what her relationships and interactions with them are like. However, she did make a good pair of enemies with Plankton in Perfect Chemistry. Not Someone's in the Kitchen With Sandy because that is an Animated Atrocities episode where they only interact in the last minute of the story, but in Perfect Chemistry, they are together for most of the main plot and act like friends at first, until *[SPOILERS]* Plankton turns out to be an evil banana who uses Sandy's equipment to teleport him to where the Krabby Patty formula is - until Sandy in return becomes a good cactus who teleports the formula back to Spongebob where they are in the Chum Bucket, so now Plankton is stuck in an empty bottle. The show in general is very guilty of not exploring the possible relationships between the secondary and reoccurring characters. Most of them only have a defining relationship with SpongeBob and Sandy is one of those that suffers the most.You`d think that wouldn`t be the case with such a limited cast.

Finally, you addressed my main grip with the show. The fact that Sandy has not been made to nicely fit in with the rest of the cast. The neighborhood and Krusty Krab, as you mentioned, are the two main locations of the show and Sandy doesn't fit into those locations. Also, how would Sandy and Squidward interact? Sandy probably wouldn't annoy Squidward too much, except with her Karate or something. It would be tricky to pair them up, but the show has gone on long enough, it needs to happen.

I feel the exact same way about Burns and Smithers. While Mr. Burns is the far more interesting character of the duo, I feel like Smithers should get more character development and love, too. On the contrary... I still have no idea why Mr. Burns didn't appear in "Halloween of Horror", "There Will Be Buds", "See Homer Run", "Moe Baby Blues", and "The Nightmare After Krustmas". Smithers appeared in those episodes. But then again... There have been times where Smithers wasn't seen in "You Kent Always Say What You Want", "She of Little Faith", "Homer Loves Flanders", and "Havana Wild Weekend".

Pretty much the fact that there's not a lot that ties her too the other main characters, Spongebob not included. No one else is interested in Karate, no other main character is really a daredevil or action type. Which limits the amount of interactions she can naturally have, without it being a little contrived. One idea I had was . .Spongebob doing Karate around the Krusty Krab when it isn't busy, and Mr. Krabs sees it thinks it's silly (despite there being no continuity it'd make sense considering Karate Choppers.) and teaches Spongebob some fighting moves that he learned while he was in the Navy. Spongebob uses said moves against Sandy and does well, but she notices that he wasn't using Karate and asks Spongebob who he learned it from. Once she learns it's Krab's she goes to him and they argue it out and probably fight, and they can throw in some gags about Mr. Krab's old age. Just some random thoughts.

I remember a long time ago where a poll was done where Sandy was listed as the most unpopular character. I could be wrong but I remember distinctly many comments where I saw people wanting her gone. Spongebob to me falls under the sad trope where the male characters are more fun than the female ones or at least people want to see them more. If you see this reply I would just like to know if your take on it. Going through my head I can name one or two full episodes featuring Sandy that I liked. Other times it would be scenes where she's part of a joke like when she messed up Patrick with the trombone. One other theory I think is that they don't want to emphasize any romances in the show. It seemed in earlier episodes Spongebob was at least fond of her but then retracted, especially in a official Nickelodeon article where he admitted liking her...kind of. Same with Pearl now that I think of it with him taking her to prom. I don't know but there were definitely more episodes early on where he clearly cared for Sandy or wanted to impress himself in front of her. More so in Ripped Pants and kind of in No Weenies Allowed.

I think the reason Sandy isn't used as much is because she isn't necessary to the story. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like her as a character, but she doesn't really fall into an archetype like 5 of the other 6 main characters. SpongeBob: Main character Patrick: Side kick Squidward: Straight man whose reactions to stupidity make it all the more funny Mr. Krabs: Boss of SpongeBob Plankton: Antagonist Of course, all these roles are very general and there are plenty of exceptions to them all, but the only other main character the show could go on without is Gary, and he doesn't appear that much either.

Pieguy, What's your favorite Sandy episode of Spongebob and why? If it help you can do one pre and post the franderization of her character. Also we have kind of seen her and Squidward together and how their relationships work in I think two episodes but it didn't focus on them, which I think is a great idea. Sandy and Squidward both have a higher intelligence so I see them teaming up would be like Roger and Steve from American Dad for some reason. Trying to solve a crime (maybe Spongebob's spatula goes missing) and Squidward has his usual pessimism and Sandy is forcefully dragging along in her optimistic way. I think that would be a great team up. and the show needs more Pearl.

Honestly that's a fantastic reason. She kind of stands outside of everywhere in her own world and the closest I can think of is maybe the riding school which really only has Ms. Puffs but every time he is there there is an easy gag. Pretty much just going to Sandy's is to hang out or something, it's not an natural location.

I’ve been doing a fanfic that rewrites various bad SpongeBob episodes for 2 years now, so I can certainly speak from experience. One of my goals with it was to make better use of all the main characters, and as a result, Sandy wound up being given a prominent role in a lot of episodes where she was originally either absent or just a footnote (like “SpongeHenge”, “Squid Baby”, “To Love A Patty”, “Bummer Vacation”, and so on), and it honestly wasn’t particularly hard to get her involved in a lot of these stories without making her presence forced. In “Squid Baby”, SpongeBob seeks her out to help with Squidward’s condition, in “To Love a Patty”, she naturally worries about SpongeBob’s sanity (cuz he’s dating a sandwich) and teams up with Krabs and Squidward to hold an intervention for the former, in “Bummer Vacation” she helps SpongeBob actually enjoy his vacation and so on. I also came up with reasons for why she seldomly interacts with Krabs and Squidward. With Krabs, it started out as a dark running gag, but I ended up characterizing him as being xenophobic towards her for being an air-breathing surface-dweller and also because of his fear of modern technology (which I think falls in line with his old-fashioned sensibilities). The latter also applies to Squidward (as I alluded to in “Squid’s Visit”), mainly due to Sandy’s tendency to play god with science, and more specifically, the events of “SquidBob TentaclePants”, which has left Squidward traumatized and very apprehensive of her.

*after video* Hmm, that's thinking outside the box, PieGuy. I had just assumed that the writers would come up with the plot conflict first before writing the opening scene, because knowing the main conflict of the episode helps frame how it should start. But then again, if they have to crank out 25 of these a year or something, I can see the writers just siting at their desks, chewing on their erasers, trying to visualize the setting of an episode before coming up with what the plot is. Who knows. Another reason I wish they'd keep going back to the books for ideas for episodes.

4:12 PieGuy, that would be an excellent idea for a new Spongebob special or TV movie. Squidward and Spongebob are on break and while they were on break at the Krusty Krab and Squidward thought of passing the time by playing his clarinet. In fact, he plays so poorly that he actually destroyed the Krusty Krab by accident, causing him to get fired, all because of his bad clarinet playing skills. And Sandy will be one of the customers in the Krusty Krab. After that, Sandy and Spongebob thought they cheer up fired Squidward by helping him walk with him to his house, but Squidward doesn't need Spongebob and Sandy to cheer him up because he's glad that he got fired. But he barks to Sandy and Spongebob because he does not believe that he plays bad clarinet since his bad clarinet skills caused him to get fired. To prove it, Squidward plays it again, and his clarinet playing skills cause another accident by having two police officers in their police car get so frustrated and annoyed by Squidward's clarinet that it cause them to get into a boat mobile accident. Thanks to Squidward's inferior clarinet skills, the police officers were injured and someone had to take over for them while they were in the hospital and that someone is Sandy and Squidward. Spongebob wants to be a police officer too and join Sandy and Squidward so he can be the Good Cop and Squidward can be the Bad Cop since Squidward is grumpy and moody. But nope. He gets taken away by Mr. Krabs because his break is over and since Squidward got fired for destroying the Krusty Krab with his bad clarinet Skills, he teams up with Sandy and they both take the job as Bikini Bottom police cops. Since Spongebob is out of the picture, Sandy is the Though Good Cop and Squidward is the.....Grumpy Cop. They'll go through a police training camp so they can become official police officers and they'll solve their first major crime. And later in the episode Squidward can use his bad clarinet playing skills to save the day. I'll call this Spongebob TV Movie..............Good Cop and Grumpy Cop What do you think? Is it Good? Is it Meh? Is it ScumBob?

It was a joke, because for some reason, SpongeBob referred to her as Sandy Squirrel rather than Sandy Cheeks. It was definitely a mistake of the script. A similar error happened with the description of the season 1 episode Texas.

Just think that Nickolodeon is presuring the writers so much that they don't have enough time to write an episode about Sandy because with Sandy, you got to use your brain because with an episode with Sandy, you better expect something different. In Pressure, you got a competition based episode, in Planet of the Jellyfish you have a Sci-Fi B movie episode, in A Flea in Her Dome, it's a survival thriller episode, and in Kerate Island, you have an Asian Kung Fu movie like episode.

I know what really does not help here is that Sandy Cheeks is a land creature when everybody else is a sea creature. That is why I plan to write a new main female character into Spongebob Squarepants in 2024, who is a sea creature like everybody else, and has a new voice actor from the same generation as the rest of the cast - Tabitha Saint Germain as Zoey Fisher. In the years to come, Zoey will appear a lot more than Sandy and Plankton, which is good because Tabitha Saint Germain is more well-known as a VA than Carolyn Lawrence and Doug Lawrence. Spongebob Squarepants does not have a lot of regularly-appearing characters, but it has made the most out of what it has with them for 22 years before we got The Patrick Star Show, and Squidina from Goons on the Moon and The Goofy Newbie became a main character in that spin-off. However, I still think Spongebob could use some new energy after 25 years, and that is why I believe that is the right time to add a new character. I really want to ask somebody who worked on and developed Spongebob Squarepants with Stephen Hillenburg why their most appearing female character is not a sea creature like everybody else. With Spongebob's street - Conch Street, and the Krusty Krab being the two main locations in the series, Zoey will be an additional character who naturally fits into the latter category. I am sure the female executive Vice President of talent at Nickelodeon among other people there would like my pitch to add in a new part, as long as I can prove I learned from all of Butch Hartman's mistakes with The Big Fairy Share Scare. Zoey Fisher is a blue fish with a green apron-dress hybrid who knew Spongebob back in Poseidon Elementary School, and wants to work with him again when Mr. Krabs is forced to hire a third staff member. Zoey is a helpful new team player who keeps Spongebob and Mr. Krabs in line so Spongebob does not let Mr. Krabs overwork him without a second thought of being underpaid. The creation of Zoey will help me and other writers do a lot of new things with Spongebob Squarepants characters, but I will not let Zoey be a Mary Sue who outshines the original male lead character like Chloe Carmichael was to Timmy Turner. She will be just as entertaining and humorous to watch as everyone else in SBSP, male or female. My mom and two girls I know from school, Payton and Allison Brown, like my idea of adding in Zoey Fisher when Spongebob Squarepants turns 25 years old because now Spongebob will have a new female companion who breathes underwater like him, so why stop at Squidina Star? Every prominent sea character in Spongebob (obviously not counting Sandy or Karen) is a different type of sea animal, but the wonderful thing about Zoey Fisher is that I chose to give her a standard character design similar to most of the background fish, so now one of them ordinary fish folk with stripes across their fin-arms can be part of the regular cast. Even though Tabitha lives in Vancouver, and Tara Strong is the only main cast member of MLP: FiM who lives in Los Angeles, Tabitha Saint Germain is the only main cast member of MLP who was born in the US instead of Canada, and that is why I wanted to give her a part in a cartoon film or series with a cast based in Los Angeles. Spongebob Squarepants is one of the biggest kids' cartoons in the world right now, and Tabitha probably would not want to pass up a big opportunity to have a new role on that show just as memorable as Minty, Wysteria, Rarity and Princess Luna, if it means she can help reach out to Spongebob's female viewers - because I do not think Spongebob Squarepants was just meant for boys in the way that Friendship is Magic was meant for girls. However, lots of boys, including me, also watched that show, so that is why I wished to have Party Favor join the Mane 6 and Button Mash join the Cutie Mark Crusaders since Spike is a dragon and not a pony. Why stop at Sandbar? Andrea Libman could record her lines from Vancouver when everybody else was in Los Angeles in The Missing Links of Moorshire (a DuckTales episode), so that should be possible for Tabitha to do with Spongebob Squarepants. Wow. This actually reminds me of The Vampire Diaries(let me explain). It is a show that adds new characters just for plot devices instead of building on different combonations of character relationships. For example, everyone in both shows are supposed to all know each other but some combonations do not get any screen time. Ex: Bonnie and Tyler, Sandy and Mr. Krabs. They just do not interact. At all.

Mairead Malesco Adventure Time still focuses on Jake and Finn being the lead duo, and while the comedy doesn't center around them from what I can tell, it's still a bro-bro action type comedy. Now Gravity Falls and Steven Universe may be exceptions, I will admit, but they are still the minority. I appreciate that things are starting to turn around, but as of now, for every 1 of these original cartoons with effort put into them, with a more diverse cast, you still get 5 or even 10 more of these buddy(is an idiot)-buddy(is an idiot) type cartoons. They're churned out to the point that it feels like they're being printed out on a template with a "what's popular right now?" filling for the mold. While we've had shows like Ren and Stimpy and Catdog, which seem like the same thing, for years, the difference is one of those characters was the rational one, if not a complete stick in the mud, which balanced out the zaniness of the other.

Hey Pieguy, I got an unrelated to this video question. (Sorry) Are you going to watch season 7 of adventure time or the stakes mini-series? Yes I know you have said you wouldn't but I have high hopes for these. Tons of shows go through bumpy seasons and to be honest season six feels more like an experiment than an official season. From the episodes confirmed, it looks like they are going on a lot less dumb side-character episodes and focusing more on Finn and Jake. I understand if you're completely done watching it but it would be really awesome to see you review parts of it. I mean, its a lot more tolerable than something like "Teen Titans Go". :D If you really don't want to take the chance I get it, I enjoy your videos either way!

It's possible that the writers didn't think of her, but it's also possible that they're just afraid of making her overpowered. Her flaws aren't as immediately apparent as most of the cast's, and the lack of emphasis on them in recent episodes is only reinforcing that fear. In addition to what you said about locations there's also the fact that in early seasons she was frequently found at Goo Lagoon, which is rarely used now.

I always thought that Sandy should have been a more main character to play up the fact that she could be a straight man. Squidward is always the straight man when Spongebob is acting silly but he's very put upon and doesn't always fit. Despite the show recycling episodes and ideas they've actually wasted a lot of potential content with the shows own universe.

Hmmm...maybe what you said about Spongebob's home and the Krusty Krab being the two main settings of Spongebob Squarepants is why Kamp Koral put a lot of characters together at the same summer camp, so we could see Sandy far more often and it would be easier to have Mr. Krabs, Plankton and Mrs. Puff together like they were in Game Night, or easier to have Sandy interact with other characters rarely seen with her in the original Spongebob Squarepants. I dislike Kamp Koral for the same reasons as Mr. Enter because, even if Stephen Hillenburg did know of the Kamp Koral spin-off, it sands off potential that Spongebob as a character originally had. While it does add potential for other characters that Spongebob knows separately to come together more often, it is rarely executed very well in Kamp Koral. I might like The Patrick Star show a bit more because it does the opposite of Kamp Koral by adding more potential to Patrick's (and Squidina's) character and the wacky comedic situations he could get into.
