I have a 2013, bought used in 2021 at 95k miles. Burns a quart of oil every 4-500 miles. Since I have owned it. Doing an engine change at 120k miles. Timing chain went, didn’t destroy the engine. I sold it in July. But just this past Wednesday I saw a post about a blown engine happening along with 2 others commenting on their blowing in the past few days. One literally was on her way home from getting the oil consumption test started at the dealership. They change your oil like 3 times within 5000 miles or something like that to check the amount of oil lost and decide if your engine needs to be replaced on their dime or not based on how much is lost. So she literally drove like 20 miles on new oil and boom.

I’ve had my 2014 for four years and I’ve had to change my VVT solenoids twice because this engine clogs them up so badly. And then when it happens, the car stalls when you’re sitting still. Right after you take your foot off of the brake, and before you push on the gas pedal. Super annoying because you get honked at lol! That being said, they’re easy to change out and $50/part. There are two. One for the intake and one for the exhaust. Intake is in the towards the front of the vehicle and is gray, exhaust is behind it towards the rear of the vehicle and is black. Autozone has these as a lifetime part, so now you can take the one you purchased from them and simply exchange the bad for the good. If you’re in a real pinch, you can hose them off and it will buy you a touch of time. Thanks for the video!!

My wife's 2015 Chevy Captiva has the same engine. It started slowly burning oil after 80K miles. Then at 115 it was drinking oil. Over a qt every 500 miles. Traded it for a RAV4. My 2015 Equinox has 88K miles now and burns just under a qt every 3K miles. I change the oil every 3K miles and it burns a little more with each oil change. The PCV valve should be placed at the highest point on the engine, which in the 2.4 case is the oil filler cap. Simply buy a non-gm oil filler cap, drill a 3/4 in. hole and put in a grommet, and use any PCV valve that fits. PCV works off of engine vacuum . The catch can is the clincher. Attach an emission hose from the PCV valve to the " in " on the catch can. Then tee into the brake booster hose, " before " the check valve which is inline, near the booster inlet nipple. Reposition the check valve in the elbow a little farther down the hose, it still works in the elbow. You also need a brass 1/2 in PEX tee where you tap into the hose near the booster vacuum nipple. ( you can also ditch the brake booster hose, which collapses for some reason near the rad hose, and replace with high quality 11/32 emission hose) ( using any other hose than emission rated is dangerous ) ( clear teflon being the best ) The "out" hose from the catch can attaches to the brass PEX tee, with the tee facing down. Mount the catch can as low as possible ( not touching the ground ) on the pass front subframe. There is a hole there already, for a bolt. After this is done, you will no longer get white foamy goo on the dipstick, oil filler cap, or on the breather fitting on the air cleaner., at lower temps, etc. Drilling into the intake manifold PCV orifice is plain retarded and won't cure anything. Although I don't personally own a Terrain with a 2.4 Ecotec, I know it is a great engine. What's wrong with the GMC Terrain is the human who did shoddy engine assemblage. ( Any engine can blow up or have serious internal damage for no detectable reason, or no detectable sabotage reason. ) If the assembly line were fully robotized, goodbye GMC Terrain forum.

@@timmypstyle Yes, so much dis-information on a simple fix. The plastic vacuum fitting on the inlet manifold where the brake booster hose assembly connects, is the best source of vac for the PCV valve. There is no need to drill holes anywhere. But insert the brass tee 'before' the inline plastic check valve. That little valve is held in with an Otiker clamp which is easily removed; and then you insert the valve farther into the hose to the right. The catch can ensures that only combustible vapors enter the engine and thus prevents valve coking. ( GDI fix ) Lately the big car companies have been making Chilkoot Pass type problems. Big lime-ups at the parts store, ha, ha,... Let's be glad only Ford does the spark plug blow-out dance ? Another peculiarity with the Terrain is the pinched small dia. metal line on the gas filler pipe assembly. Always drop that pipe and deal with the corrosion immediately. It is $189.00 ... ! I currently have a paperweight sitting in my front yard. It strongly resembles a 2017 Chevy Equinox with the 2.4 I4 engine. Bought it with 22, 000 miles on it and put about 74,000 on it (total of 94,000 miles). In January, my wife was driving to work on the freeway. The oil had been changed in late October, still perfectly good. Out of the clear blue sky, she experienced a dramatic loss of power, followed almost immediately by the Low Oil Pressure warning and a loud bang. When I arrived at the car there was ZERO oil in the crankcase and a huge puddle of oil under the engine. I put four quarts in it, started it up, and shut it off right away due to the enormous knocking noise coming from the engine. Dealership was no help, GM was absolutely NO help. Engine is blown and needs replacing, to the tune of about $5,000. If anyone has a link to the current class-action lawsuit (for the 2017 models), let me know. GM and Chevy will NEVER see another dime of my money. All of the Ecotec engines (2.4 I4, 3.6 V6. and 5.3 V8) have real problems with oil control, and GM does NOTHING to fix them. GM is now at the very top of my corporate S**t list. Again, if you have a link to the class-action lawsuit for the 2017 Equinoxes with the 2.4 I4, reply to this. I could use the help.

Only issue, would stall startups, then run fine, never stalled when driving. Found a youtube video saying add a oil thickener, I added bardahl no smoke, about 1/2 the bottle, approx 8 oz, has never stalled since adding the oil thickener. This was 3 years ago I discovered the oil thickener stopped the stalling. If I don't add it after oil change it stalls, so is just part of my oil changes now, uses very little oil between changes. These Equinox's are hit or miss. The newer technology using the high pressure fuel pump and dry air intakes has a lot to improve upon. Intake valves are dirty because there is no fuel spraying into them, the direct injection bypasses this. The pistons get sprayed with high pressure fuel ≥500psi! conventional rings were not made to perform under these conditions. The high pressure fuel sprays the oil right off of the cylinder walls as the piston travels. This causes unprecedented wear on the rings and pistons. I like this vehicle, the best advise is to change the oil every 3K and put the updated vented oil fill cap on. I'm in New England, I let it warm up in the winter before going anywhere, especially when it's below freezing.

GM has replaced bad 2.4L engines and extended warranties on the engines that are in good condition. I've seen some people say they lose a quart of oil after driving only about 100 miles. Again, sincerely glad that yours is doing well. But they are far from being a reliable engine. I've belonged to impala/monte carlo groups for 6 years, ram groups for 10, challenger/charger groups for 6, and f150 groups for 10 years and even an f150 forum for 17 years. In the 6 months time that I owned my equinox, I've even more comments and posts about the same issues on these than I've seen in all the groups on all the common issues of all the other vehicles COMBINED. More in 7 months in equinox groups than 6 to 17 YEARS of all the others. Also the new truck/suv lawsuit is for all V8 engines offered for the past 12 years or so. @timmypstyle2 жыл бұрын
@@danr8787 yup they have weak piston rings. Even if you get a new replacement crate engine from GM right now, it still has the same weak rings. I actually explain what happens from the weak rings in 1 of the 2 videos I made. But yes what you said is kinda correct. Both under warranty and out of warranty, they will have you come in for an oil consumption test. That means, they change your oil, tell you to come back after you've driven a certain number of miles. Then they change it again and document how much oil was lost, and tell you to drive again. When you come back the 3rd time, they change the oil and again document the oil loss. If its over like 1 quart in 2000 or 3000 miles, they will replace the pistons and rings or the engine. Which one is determined by GM based on how bad it is. But that also means that 0.9 quarts lost within those miles driven is deemed "normal" by them. And if that happens, then they won't do anything to help. If you ever need a replacement crate engine, look into Jasper engines. So far, out of all the people ive seen who replaced theirs with a jasper engine, ive only seen 1 person say they've had similar issues with it. I got rid of my equinox before anything started with it. Okay everybody has to draw their own conclusions. I had a 2017 2.4 4 cylinder 6-speed automatic LT all-wheel drive. I just traded it recently with 82,000 Miles on it. It burns zero oil, did not have a cooling problem, original engine and transmission, original timing chain, rear main seal, and zero leaks. When I traded it in the dealership open the hood they said to me everything here is original you have replaced no major parts. I stated there was no reason to it never broke down. The one thing that I did was always on top of preventive maintenance. People would say this is overkill but this vehicle never saw a tow truck once. I did an oil filter change every 3,500 miles and use full synthetic oils. Every 35,000 miles I would change out the transmission fluid, the rear differential fluid, and the fluid in the transfer case. As far as any rust issues and paint qualities I would wash the vehicle by hand minimum twice a month and would do a full exterior detail compound wax Etc. Every 6 months. When I traded it it still looked brand new even the plastic headlights weren't fogged out. It was 6 years old when I traded it and I still got well over 10 grand for it. With that being said knowing that others had major issues with the vehicle and even though I never did it was always a thought in the back of my mind. For that reason I would never recommend it to anyone. But it would be up to the consumer to draw their own conclusions on whether they would want one or not. For me it was one of the best vehicles I've ever owned.

I own 2 Equinox' and one is a 2016 and other is a 2017. I've had 0 problems with both for the past 4 years as I bought both right after their 2 year leases were up. They have been so reliable and I have no complaints about this make and model of vehicle. They've been awarded, I think the top 3 models with fewest problems by independent companies that I can't remember the name of, off the top of my head. But my personal experience has been identical to the experiences others have had with this make and model! I've never had one stall out on me nor give me any starting problems in any weather conditions here in Iowa. I live 45 minutes from the Minnesota border so it does get quite cold here. I would recommend any Equinox in the 2016 and 2017 year of manufacturer date as I don't know how well these newer turbo charged engines will hold up. I purposely bought mine just before the turbo charge engine became standard since anything with faster moving parts will typically have more problems the more they age vs. slower moving parts on anything mechanical. I just didn't like that coupled with the added 2 gears they added to the transmission because in my mind, that's more that can break down as it ages. I'm a guy that bought a 2017 Equinox LT without power seats, nor heated seats, nor remote start, just to reduce the number of parts that can wrong with it though 😄!

I'm no mechanic but I am pretty mechanically inclined and doesn't seem to have any oil leaking from the seals. However I am very surprised this thing was still running with original plugs at 121k miles.. I changed them out for OEM and went from 22 mpg city to 27-28 (I did change the VVT solenoids while I was at it) but I have a interlock device on my car so I can't take some of the connectors off to get to this pin sized hole in the intake manifold. I'll probably check out one of these products. Thanks!

I own a 2017 Chevy Equinox LT 2.4 Liter vehicle. The oil I use for mine is Liqui Moly. I also have a K&N filter in mine factory standards not the cone version and I have E3 Sparkplugs. I've had not 1 not 1 issue at all since I've done that. I check my oil regularly and I don't skip a beat on none. Not even when mine is in Eco mode. I get about 45 mpg in the city and 55 mpg on the interstate. The reason why I use the K&N filter is because it keeps my engine cool and my fuel doesn't consume so quick. I could drive mine from Virginia to SC/GA line and than I'd have to stop for gas only once before getting to Jacksonville FL. With the E3 sparkplugs I'd use Octane 91+ for those. Now I can pick up speed on the interstate from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds no lie ill do a video one day to show yall. No internal problems at all. And my engine has been successful very well. Oh and guys if you have those vehicles the best way to pick up speed is to use the M gears. Dont worry the transmission is Dual so once u get to where u need to be u can shift it back into drive with no issues. Using the M gears to get on the Interstate drop it 2 gears down. So if your in 4th gear drop it down to 2nd gear and up it to 5 once your past 45 mph. It's considered as quickshift. If you have no experience in driving standard do not attempt to use this. If you do you'll understand what I mean

@@crockpot5194 claiming 0-60 in 4.5 seconds in a 182hp 172lb-ft vehicle weighing over 4000lbs is BS when a camaro SS is barely quicker than that with double the power and less weight. A k&n filter won't cool off your engine and might change the intake temperatures by a couple degrees which means no increase in power. E3 spark plugs were aimed for economy, not performance, and have so far been proven to not do a damn thing. Getting 45mpg in the city(over double the rating) and 55mpgs on the highway(almost double the rating) is also BS. Even with the best oil in the world, you won't increase your performance by more than a few horsepower. I have owned 15 vehicles including muscle cars, and none have done 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. Especially when I used to have a 200hp monte carlo SS which did 0-60 in 8.5 and currently own a 242hp monte carlo that does 0-60 in 7.0. On top of that, I have had a near 460hp ram and currently own a 15 challenger R/T which weighs the same as the equinox and has more than double the power and torque that the equinox has, and it does 0-60 in 5.0. There is no way you're doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds unless you have a lot of mods including a form of boost. As for the manual mode, it isn't made to be used as a sport shifter. Its there to hold gears longer fir going up hills or towing. Its not meant to be used every day or for performance. For instance if you were going up a hill, you could manually shift the transmission so you can go up the hill gradually in a lower without flooring it, and that makes it easier on the engine. I have also had k&n filters in 9 vehicles and k&n intakes on 4. Some added a few mpgs but it won't double your gas mileage. I also currently have a k&n filter in my equinox like you do, along with my 06 monte carlo and 15 challenger both having one. They might add 1 or 2 horsepower. Nothing you do to your equinox will get you 55mpgs except driving downhill and nothing will get you to do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds unless you add a turbo or supercharger, which both would require supporting mods. Even the 3.6L V6 with over 260hp won't do it close to that quick.

Yeah check the dipstick often. The sensor that is supposed to tell you that your oil is low doesn't work. That was another part of these cars that didn't work, which contributed to people driving with no oil in their cars. Also my mechanic recommended changing the oil every 3500 miles no matter heat type or brand of oil used. These cars burn oil, and also get gasoline in the oil, which breaks down the lubrication properties of the oil.

Thanks for sharing this video. A big issue that I find with used American cars is how sketchy they can be. If the previous owner disregarded regular maintenance (oil and filter chnages), then you the new owner will have expensive mechanical repair problems to deal with. American cars are more sensitive than German or Japanese cars. I had a friend change out his engine oil on his 2018 Honda Civic every 35k miles and no problems. If that kind of sluggish maintenance were done on American cars, you would’ve destroyed your engine multiple times over. I bought a brand new 2021 Chevy Equinox and have since put 60k miles on it. No issues at all because I get the engine oil, oil filter, and the engine air filter changed out in half the time that GM recommends. The manufacturers are in the business of selling new cars and only want to push the warranty for 3-5 years before selling you another new car again.

@timmypstyle2 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it. But its actually the opposite. You had good luck with a bad design. There have been 2 class action lawsuits over these engines with a 3rd currently open. Over 1 million owners involved in them. And then on top of that, there are many people who did not know about the previous lawsuits and missed out on them that had or are having issues with their engines blowing. Many people involved also saw no money from the lawsuits even tho they were involved in them. There is a Technical Service Bulletin(TSB) from GM about one of the design flaws, which is the PCV valve design. Look up TSB number 14882 for yourself. I have the info in the description. Literally every single LAF and LEA 2.4L engine that is driven in freezing temperatures has the potential to blow the rear main seal at any time when driving with the outside air being below about 20 degrees. That is the PCV design flaw. So about half of the 2.4s in circulation have that potential, plus all of them have weak piston rings, and all of them are direct injection, and direct injection creates carbon buildup a lot faster than older style port injection engines. Also there is actually a class action lawsuit now over the bad design of the engines in the silverados and big SUVs that problems are arising from too.

@@Chevyboiz yeah because 3 class action lawsuits over the 2.4L alone, a Technical Service Bulletin about the PCV hole, an oil consumption test performed by dealerships FOR the oil consumption issue, and many payouts from GM where they paid up to half of the cost of an engine replacement, means people don't take care of their cars... Even people with a full service history from dealerships are blowing engines because of the oil consumption problem. And...now the 5.3L, 6.0L, and 6.2L V8s are getting lawsuits for the same problems happening to them. Those are design flaws, not lack of maintenance. Also GM has it in the owners manual to change the oil at 7500 miles. If you do this, your engine WILL fail. They said to change at that interval before knowing about their design flaws.

Kept it at the dealership for several days and they couldn’t figure it out so me and a friend did. Don’t park then in front of LED lights. They have 22 computers and the LED lights keep the computers on. I put 100 miles a day on mine and there isn’t one problem with it and I now have 99,000 miles on it. It still drives like brand new.

There is a reason why mechanics everywhere universally recommend buying Toyotas and Hondas over anything else. Used Toyotas and Hondas are more expensive than other brands because they are much higher quality, they will absolutely pay off in the long run.

I bought a 2005 in 2006. I still have it and it does have a few issues. I am at 140,000 miles. When I got it in 2006, the engine blew 2 weeks after I got it. Thank goodness, I purchased the EW or I would have been screwed. I was told that my engine is in upside down, which I didn't know. I do now have issues with oil and antifreeze issues. It seems to overheat and I have to like turn off the car for a little while. I do have the 6 cylinder. I am going to be trading it in soon. I was thinking about getting a 2021 but now, probably not.
@timmypstyle3 жыл бұрын
2021 so far is fine. From 2018 and newer, they have totally different engines in them. I have not seen any complaints in the Facebook groups except 2 people saying they got a code for the turbo having overboost or underboost.

Does anybody get the abs and traction control go off at the same time? I'm thinking it's the wheel bearing but could be a sensor
@timmypstyle3 жыл бұрын
Most likely wheel speed or abs sensor. Sounds more like wheel speed sensor but im not sure what the setup is on these. Don't know if it's just a wire or if it requires a new wheel bearing.

Glad to hear it! But if you have the 4 cylinder engine, please still keep a eye on the things I mention in the part 1 and part 2 videos to help keep it running well. Do not go over 3500 miles per oil change, watch your oil level by checking it weekly. Then if you don't notice the level dropping, change that interval to 2 weeks and keep that routine. If it starts burning oil, you will catch it before it does any damage. Also do not use the Eco button, as it has been directly linked to the piston rings having issues earlier than vehicles that don't use eco mode.

The problem is too small motor for that heavy car, the 3.0 I think so doesn't have this probles
@timmypstyle3 жыл бұрын
While I somewhat agree, there have been plenty of engines that had way less power for the weight they were pulling that did ok. The old 4 bangers were like 120hp and less and were pulling around dodge caravans and small pickup trucks. The 2.4 in these is 182hp and 172lb-ft and has a 6spd auto with close gearing to compensate a bit. Plus there are other brands that do fine with similar power. It gets up and goes ok, only has 13hp less than my dad's old 94 V8 crown vic that weighed just as much. Ive also had a 78 f150 that could pull 6000lbs with 165hp, and an 08 V6 f150 that was rated to pull 5500lbs along with its 4350lb curb weight with 202hp. Its not really as bad as it seems when you compare it to a lot of things like trucks and SUVs that can pull quite a bit of weight with not much power. It will also do 0-60 in under 10 seconds which is quicker than most vehicles in the 80s and a lot of vehicles in the 90s. They had a lot less power to weight and most were fine. As for the 3.0, it has timing chain issues but not really much else. But honestly for being a 4 cylinder in the equinox, it really isn't terrible power wise. Its just mostly bad design flaws causing issues.

@@timmypstyle so do triton motors any Ford 4.0, the dodge 5.7 drop lifter retainers, Ford ecoboost have premature turbo failure, and the list goes on and on, every motor has issues like this. But a clogged pcv valve is due to lack or maintenance schedule, get good at servicing vehicles and you won’t have problems
@timmypstyle3 жыл бұрын
@@vicc3337 the PCV issue happens because the PCV is a 3mm hole in the intake manifold. Its not maintenance related, its condensation from cool oil warming up, and that condensation freezes up in that 3mm hole.
@timmypstyle3 жыл бұрын
@@vicc3337 also yes those engines have their issues but the 2.4L literally will start burning oil at a random time, including new. And its a very high percentage of vehicles. The class action lawsuit was over 1 million customers on top of the recall. These cars are probably a 30% chance of having oil consumption issues, add another 20% for living in cold temps to cause the PCV issue. The 5.7L hemi lifter failure is probably a 5% failure, along with the other also being only probably 5%.
@vicc33373 жыл бұрын
You must be throwing random percentages out there because the engines and issues I’ve listed happen significantly more than 5%, especially the 5.7 hemi lifter retainer, my point is every vehicle has major issues after being put out on the market because it is impossible to test every application, the Ford Focus from 12 and up have junk transmissions, the f150s have recalls of transmissions kicking down to 1st gear at highway speeds and grenading entire drive lines, dodge is notorious for junk drive lines like transmissions and differentials until they switched to ZF, most of the vw FSi turbos have huge oil consumption problems, you could claim common issues on every vehicle to steer people away. In my opinion the 2.4 option In the equinox is significantly better than the 3.0 or 3.6 those had huge lifter and timing chain issues that didn’t get fixed until late 2015

I own a silver 2017 Chevy Equinox LT all-wheel drive with the 4-cylinder I purchased it 2 years ago with about 20, 000 miles on it it now has 57, 000 miles on it I change the oil every three thousand miles or so give or take I had one solenoid problem that I had to replace at approximately 42,000 it was causing the service engine light to come on and stalling I have to admit it hasn't been a bad vehicle but I would not do another one. Because of the issues people seem to have with these things I live in fear every time I go out to the vehicle is it going to start as there going to be a problem what's going to happen today ninety-nine percent of the time there's never a problem but I'm constantly worried about it so when the warranty runs out in September I will be trading it in and it will probably be my last GM product which is a shame because since I started driving 99% of my vehicles were GM vehicles but I can't do it anymore I fear this vehicle and there's nothing General Motors produces that I like anymore.
