195,000 miles on my 13 terrain. I use bardahl no smoke with stop leak. Reduces the oil consumption to about 1/10 a quart every thousand miles. Every 1000 miles as well remove the intake and clean the oil that collects inside the manifold. Car runs beautifully with a lil tlc.

Good to see you posting again Luke! It's always sad to lose a good friend or family member. Although none of us will make it out alive, it's still sad. Knowing someone like that makes life better, because they will always be a part of your good memories. As to the car burning oil, I hope the Seafoam works for you. I've always had to replace the rings to solve that kind of problem. I was glad to see the larger tires solved the bottoming out problem on the Buick.

Yes, there are very many great memories of her. She raised my wife and was an adopted mother to her. Her, and her friend would always make dinners any time one of us had a birthday, or for Christmas. I'm going to really miss that. As far as the seafoam, I think it has helped. We drove about 130 miles yesterday with the seafoam in the crank case, and then I changed the oil. It had used a half quart in that time which is an improvement. I'll do an update after a thousand miles or so.

Excess pressure in the crank case. Drill a hole in the oil filler cap and install a PVC valve. This excess pressure also contributes to premature failure of the rear main seal

These cars burn soooo much freaking oil! I have a 2017 and my wife started using it for door dash and this car goes though 5QTs a month. The oil consumption issue with this 2.4 eco-tech engine is a huge problem. I have to check the oil once a week and usually had 1/2 to 1 quart.

Yes they will burn oil. The Seafoam cleaning and adding in a pcv valve seems to have almost stopped the oil usage. I still check it every second time I drive it but it only uses half a quart between oil changes now.

It might be easier to add the seafoam to the gas when it is at about 1/4 a tank of gas. That is 16 oz per 4 gallons. I did that and used CRC GDI valve cleaner. I think it gets through and cleans the rings as well. Now to see how fast it goes through oil.

@lukeFugate

@ericzerkle8486 actually after I looked it up carbon deposits can cause dieseling. The carbon holds heat and acts like a glow plug. The seafoam probably knocked some of it loose and it's letting it diesel. I think it was carboned up pretty bad and might need another treatment through the vacuum line.

Chain is correct.
@sbond1963
@sbond1963 Жыл бұрын
You got it backwards. Unlike standard fuel injection, this 2.4 engine uses “direct injection”, which contaminates oil with fuel starting the day of the oil change. Fuel dilution limits the lifespan of oil. Failure to change the oil at 5k leads to a breakdown in the oils ability to lubricate and clean. Which wears down the links in the chain, lengthening it. So.. the chain is a symptom of the problem. The problem is the owner not performing the maintenance.

The oil burning has stopped completely. It doesn't use enough now to see a difference between oil changes. If I ever have to pull this engine out, I'll be putting in a different one. I would probably go with a 3100 V6 and transmission from an older Chevy car. I have an old '95 Lumina that the unibody frame rusted out It still has a strong running engine. This Equinox is way too heavy for a 4-cylinder. Also, I really don't like the transmission, kind of feels like a ticking time bomb, with so many gears it is always shifting and doesn't even have a dipstick to check it.

Thanks for your videos. Just bought my 16 year old daughter a 2012 equinox with 118,000. Got a good deal and now I know why. It just had a fresh oil change when we bought it and after the first full tank of gas, it used almost a quart of oil. Also the blow by was strong from the oil cap like yours was. I changed to the pressure relief oil cap to prevent any main seals blowing. I also added 1/2 can of seafoam to the fuel. I plan on doing seafoam in the oil before the next oil change. I did the test of plugging pcv hose to hear the whistle and I did not get one so I’m guessing I need to drill a hole and clean the orifice. Is the drill hole precise or just pretty close to where you did? It’s hard to see from the video of exact location of drilling. Also… would you suggest adding a pcv valve in original oil cap or just staying with the new cap with the pressure relief built in and clean orifice every 5-10,000 miles?
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate 9 ай бұрын
So far this has been a very dependable car, and with the oil burning problem solved, it should last for a long time. I think I would recommend the PCV in the cap. I think that pretty much makes the hole I drilled useless. I haven't worried about the hole since I did that and in a way wish I hadn't drilled the hole in the intake. If you do still want to clean out the hole, The hole I drilled was pretty much in the center of the space. If it is off a little it won't matter that much as you can feel around with the wire to find the hole. Good luck and hope your daughter enjoys the car for a long time.

Hey Luke great to see you doing a video again. Not that I haven't watch the others I just don't understand a lot about the alternate fuel thing. This interest me because I have a little bit of a different problem and wondered if you've come across this and what solution you might have to try outside of surgery! Lol My 4-cylinder 1997 Suzuki sidekick has a bit of a different problem. It was running rich and had a misfire we've gotten that taken care of but apparently fuel is somehow getting past whatever and dumping into my oil a lot. So when I do an oil change the oil appears very thin and smells a lot of gas. When I start it up after the engine is totally cool down or upon first start up in the morning there will be some smoke. I have been using Lucas high mileage oil treatment oil change trying to add thickness to the oil and more lubricating properties. But I worry about it and I've spent a ton of money recently on repairs and don't really have money to spend yet I don't want to have to replace an engine either! Any ideas for additives or things that I could do that might help? I have to change my oil every 45 days because I drive 3000 Miles and that. Of time. I've always been religious about changing the oil.
@lukeFugate
@lukeFugate Жыл бұрын
Good to hear from you again. Sounds like it could be either stuck rings, or just plain worn out rings. The problem with running really rich is washing oil off the cylinder walls causing loss of lubrication. It could have worn the rings, or scratched up the cylinder walls. I'm not sure if that engine has a mechanical fuel pump, probably not being a 1997. I have seen the diaphragm go bad in a mechanical fuel pump and dump fuel into the crank case. If it is still getting fuel past the rings, it may still be running rich or the oil rings are gone. I would suggest getting ahold of a borescope to look inside the cylinders. It would show up right away if they were scarred up. I have used some stuff called Restore it comes in a silver can and I think Wal Mart has it. Heres a link to see what it looks like. amzn.to/3P1ZXT0 It has worked for me to free up rings and increase compression. It doesn't always work though. I think the engine is getting worn and will probably need to have the rings replaced at some point. The running rich is probably what accelerated the wear.

With the mods I have done to this it doesn't use enough oil between changes to add any. I am going to add a gauge soon. I'll make a video of it when I do.

I honestly don't think it burns oil. See, the front crank shaft seal needs to be replaced roughly every 30k-40k miles. It starts out leaking about a quart every 100 miles or so. Whats happening is the timing wheel/harmonic wheel is spraying the oil downwards to the ground. If you look behind the passenger side tire on the engine you will see oil all over. This is after a long period of time without fixing it. If you don't replace it the car will start to buck a bit as your driving and can also buck real bad at stop lights. Im gonna make a video tomorrow. Unfortunately this car is our family vehicle so it must always work🙏 I will NEVER buy a G.M. product made after 1999 ever again...I have a 88 one ton G.M.C.and it is truly like a rock💪💪💪🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲💪💪💪🏆🏆🏆

Yeah, the older GMs were great. This treatment seems to have fixed my Equinox though. It only uses about a quart per oil change now.

It let it out after we got on the main road. Looked like a smoke screen, I couldn't see anything behind me. It could have been clogged and the Seafoam cleared it out.

I guess you skipped through lol. I said at the start that I put up a version that was straight to the point in the description. The longer version was for my regular subscribers.

My man not only had to become a mechanic in order to own a 2.4 but also had to become an engineer and inventor. Kinda makes you wonder why smart people like this buy these turds in the first place. I wonder this about myself. But my 2017 terrain will be paid off soon( owe $2,500) at 90k miles and burns 1.5 qts in between 4,000 mi oil changes . It will be sold/traded in for what ever I can get and I’m washing my hands with GM. And even American made vehicles from now on. The quality is trash. Sadly enough, if a man wants a reliable vehicle now days he’s gotta buy a foreign.

Well in this case, I didn't buy it. It was inherited. It's sad to see that in 2017 they still hadn't fixed the issue. I probably would never buy anything this new, just not my style. After seeing how much stuff there is to go wrong in newer cars, screens, and buttons everywhere, even on the steering wheel. The computer controls everything, including all the lights and plastic covering the entire engine compartment. I looked at my brother-in-law's 2020 Camry, it's the same way all bells and whistles and fancy stuff that will break and just become a nuisance. I'll stick to my older stuff with actual style and easy to work on. My wife loves it though so I guess I gotta keep it on the road. That being said after doing these mods I have to admit it doesn't use any oil between changes now, and starts up every time without fail. It is still a slow and badly balanced car though.

This Seafoam cleaning and the PCV mod have completely stopped the oil usage in this car. I don't have to add any between changes.
