If you are going to use your datejust for alot of physical activity DONT!!! get one with a saphire crystal. The crystal sits higher than the bezel and break easily, I am a watchmaker and fix many with this problem. We have to service the whole watch because many times pieces of the crystal go to the movement through the date window, and many times scratch the dial. Also...their is no comparing a vintage pie pan dial to a flat one. If the bracelet is an issue, buy a stainless steel jubilee on ebay for 20dlls. And put the authentic one away in case you ever sell your watch. This seamed like a good video but lacks important information

Ok, so I’m going to get my first Rolex this year, and I want a 1601. Your points are valid. I’m not arguing that, but this video is definitely for someone who is new to watches. Anyone who’s been around for more that 5 years and has gone down the rabbit hole of this hobby, would know all this. I like the charm of an older watch, and I find that buying used or vintage has more appeal. The new Rolex are nice, but they lack the charm of a vintage. Also, you can get a vintage DJ with sapphire, you just need to get one that’s not as old. I think the 1603’s have sapphire. On the point of getting a new 36, that’s good if you can even get one. The only way you’re getting one now is if you have a long buying history with an AD, and even then you’re going to be on a waitlist. After that, you need to go to the grey market where you’re going to end up spending over retail. That’s just not a smart option. I’ll go with the vintage where I have more options and can shop around for the best deal.

I want to clarify some points that you mentioned. Firstly what we call vintage rolex are made by only hand not any robotic machine as today so it gives much more precise and uniqeness. Secondly imagine the old cars or old cottons in fashion industry made years ago, they are so good because they hadn’t implemented any cheap materials that makes production cost much less today. Actually I want to explain much more but unfotunately language barrier makes me use simple words :) sorry. Last but most important thing is the marketplace keepers especially brands force us to buy new things. We need to think that are those new watches will last 30 years and keep their durability. Vintages proved that and they still precise. A mechanic never brokes if it is well lubricated and used carefully. Thank you.

HAHAHAHAHA ...! Here is yet another superficial charlatan who has no idea what the real concept of quality is..! In the 70s, it took almost a year to complete the creation of a DJ, also because it was finished by hand in numerous phases...Today watches (including Rolex) are almost entirely produced with sophisticated laser machinery, and when they leave the factory they have a high level of manufacturing perfection but no craftsmanship, to confuse this with quality is to be ignorant of what quality really is...As a white-haired expert and owner of vintage and modern Rolexes, I can tell you that vintage is even superior to modern, but it would take a long time to explain why...
@Chris-mm5gi3 жыл бұрын
Good thoughts on what to expect going vintage vs modern. One point that was overlooked is Rolex’s tendency (and sometimes requirement) to replace big components during a factory service. It’s possible to go vintage but get a watch with a recent service that looks close to new but which still shows some charm from the years/miles on it still. I recently picked up a birth year (1983) datejust with a gorgeous silver service dial and a clean date disk that combines (for me) both aspects of what I would want in my “perfect” datejust (vintage looks and heritage, without unpleasant damage and with the assurances that come with a recent Rolex service). It’s an interesting sector of Rolex collecting since true vintage hounds tend to turn up their nose at service replacement parts in a vintage watch. But for a customer wanting heritage, reliability, and beauty, you can find interesting options if you look around.

You buy it because it’s beautiful, you have to appreciate the old first because there is where they started. For me it does’nt matter the quality. You can’t compare a brand new watch to a 70’s or 80’s watch. Im still buy a vintage Rolex to begin my journey in this watch world 👍🏼

I have a 1979 datejust. Is it waterproof?
@DEXVD6 жыл бұрын
Any vintage watch essentially becomes a de facto dress watch. It doesn't matter if its a Sea Dweller or a Datejust. As the parts to service these watches become rarer or irreplaceable, often these watches loose the durability or water resistance they once have. My vintage Rolex watches have been serviced by RSC and are supposedly water resistant at their original ratings but if anything happened, the replacement of damaged original parts like the dial and hands would significantly decrease the value of the watch and much of the charm it may have held as a vintage piece. Its like having a vintage Land Rover, you aren't going to take it rock crawling with modern Jeeps, you are more likely to spend your time with it at car shows or polishing it or using it to do things a Honda Civic could accomplish (staying on maintained road ways). With vintage prices coming close to meeting or often exceeding the cost of new, you have to make a conscious decision that you value the aesthetic of a vintage watch over the function and versatility of a new piece. I built a collection of all vintage watches but it has become a point of annoyance for me to own over a dozen high end swiss watches but nothing I can wear in the pool or to the beach or during any activity that may damage one of these pieces. Its motivated me to start paring down my vintage pieces to make room for some versatile modern pieces that may lack aesthetic or story but will provide more function while still communicating my appreciation for horology.
@EverDayBest6 жыл бұрын
I've never understood the people who care about watches being waterproof. I just don't wear a watch if I know I will be going swimming.
@DEXVD6 жыл бұрын
I suppose the utility of higher water resistance is related to the amount of time you spend in or around the water. If you sail, row, kayak or participate in other watersports in your free time or spend a lot of time at the beach, pools or hot tubs, than to always be removing your watch for all of these activities could leave you spending a lot of time outside of your workplace or home without your watch. If you are more of an indoorsy type than sure a vintage watch or dress watch makes a lot more sense for your lifestyle, you won't gain significant benefit from having a watch with water resistance. For the indoorsy type that still likes the look of a sports watch a vintage sports watch or something like that 38mm Panerai with 30m water resistance could make sense.
@EverDayBest6 жыл бұрын
True. I generally like 1940's - 1960's dress watches on straps. I am an active person in shape but don't do any watersports. From my observation, I have a feeling that a large proportion of the people interested in water proofing aren't necessarily going to get any use out of it, but rather peace of mind.

As a professional watchmaker...you pretty much get what you pay for until you get REALLY old Rolex, such as a bubble back, in which case you will pay a lot of money for a watch that doesn't work well. My concern with vintage watches is parts availability and movement design. There are some movements I wont touch like the 1161. As for vintage datejust designs, parts are available though most will be after market and the watch itself is designed with the watchmaker in mind and are a dream to work on. Just be careful of what you buy
@benross29014 жыл бұрын
This video is silly. A vintage Datejust is a thing of beauty, we all realize it is not a modern timepiece when entering the market for an older watch based on price and time gone by. One of the worst reviews I've seen.
@waltersmith39266 жыл бұрын
You make some good points. Your content is balanced and rant free. Perspective is the key. As is the case with vintage cars, modern tends to outperform vintage. But sometimes vintage just looks so cool. I have a vintage 1973 .750 gold Oyster Perpetual. The case is 34 mm. It has the original Rolex lizard strap with the Rolex buckle. It is a classic dress watch. Now days watches are larger and less understated. But the times, they are a changin'. This watch touches all the bases for me. And it cost significantly less than a brand new Rolex with same setup. I prefer the vintage look most of the time.

One more thing guys.... The thing about vintage watches is that you cant help but feel their fragility. I received my 1986 DJ today. I am in love with it but oh boy oh boy if anything were to happen to it it would cost a fortune to repair. The bracelet is like a wizard's sleeve, the screw down crown needs to be tightened strongly or it just springs out (Dunno if thats normal) and when i adjusted the date it felt slippery, like i had to rotate more than normal to move onto the next number some times. Are all these problems normal? Is it possible that the bracelet breaks? Please help

Don't agree with most of your rationale here especially when you say the technological gap in quality between vintage and current models, yeah yeah, but when you compare prices say $ 2500 for an early 80s datejust and the $8-12K sticker for new then dollar per dollar it makes sense to go vintage I mean the Price gap is huge compared to the quality gap (just my opinion).

This is a great topic! I am into air-cooled Porsche and have been lucky enough to have been in the game since my late twenties. The older cars can't touch the new cars with regard to Performance or fit and finish... not even close...but they have some exceptional charm! I had the ability to buy a newer model when I first started doing the car thing and I almost did but I just fell in love with all of the imperfections of the Vintage model which I found quite interesting and now I could never go back. If I were to buy a new car it would probably be something like a performance Audi sedan and I was stick with the air-cooled Porsche as the toy. I think the combination of a vintage datejust with a modern diver or something like that could really fit the ticket for me! Great content and a unique video!

Though, even though I have some very early Datejusts which I do wear, after 1984-1985 will have sapphire crystal which generally modern or usual watch guys enjoy. @philipyong65845 жыл бұрын
Hi. I totally agree with you. But you forgot to mention one most important fact in this video. Modern rolexes or preowned 10 years old are luxury or status symbols. You just can not tell people you are wearing a luxury watch when your watch, eg. A vintage rolex, costs like us$ 2,000 to us $3,000 to buy and made in 70's or 80's (4:08). Also paying up to us $ 8,000 to us $ 9,000 for a new rolex watch gives you warranty. That is a piece of mind. My point is most people are more educated nowadays to know the difference in price between new and vintage 70's and 80's. Also how about a modern watch like a TISSOT, ORIS, HAMILTON and if you are willing to pay more, you can get a modern TUDOR 65 Black Bay and TUDOR is owned by ROLEX. If still can not afford a modern ROLEX in cash, you can always pay us $3,000 cash and financed it with a credit card.

You forgot to mention some vintage DJ do not have quickset date. It is a PITA to wind the date from one side of the month to the other. Also, the waterproofness might be gone. Here’s the problem with this take. You could say the same about any high(er) end watch. I have a DJ 1601 and am in love with it. Of course the quality of a modern DJ is miles beyond that of vintage models. I also have a vintage Omega Seamaster Deville that is beautiful. Of course a modern Seamaster is of higher quality. If that was not the case Omega and a Rolex would not be the prized watch brands they are today. I got a sense of judgement from this video. As if the person looking to buy a vintage Rolex is simply buying what they can afford. As if buying a vintage Rolex is beneath a true collector. While I’m sure some people do buy them with that motivation. However, to assume that of every buyer is extremely arrogant IMO. People I know who buy vintage watches appreciate the history of the brand, of the model, or even of the individual piece.

Why does the vintage jubilee bands feel so light and cheap compared to the latest DJ?

I just pretended to be “that guy”, and went to Chrono24, looking at silver dial Datejusts filtered on two years, 1970 and 2015. The latter were almost all at least 50% pricier than the former. While I agree that the modern ones are better built, “that guy” has a budget, and must buy within the budget, so better to get into the hobby with vintage, at his budget, than not at all. I think you’re also underestimating the powers of discrimination of debutant collectors, who will go through photos and descriptions like a private eye to make sure the watch is for them. Sure, the pitfalls get deeper and wider, the more vintage you go, but you gotta start somewhere.

Great video. I just had the pins replaced and stretch fixed for 150 bucks in the USA. MY 16200 ROLEX CAME BACK NEAR PERFECT I had it serviced for 200 USD. TOOK only 2 weeks. Buffed and polished. Great video. Ask if you want the name of guy that did this work. Neal

John can you elaborate on the technicals workings of a vintage datejust. I mean, will it run for another ten years or is it just as risky as buying an 30 year old car? And how accurate will it be ticking? I mean will it still give me the accurate time after 6 months or will I have to adjust the time every other week?

what you said applies to ALL vintage watches. BUT i think vintage datejust are soo much more reliable than other vintage watches.

excellent, excellent, excellent! as the owner of a 1974 two tone datejust i bought new and wore very sparingly you are spot on! it has never been serviced (it was only 400 dollars new!) and has major crystal scars, needs a new crown--threads are iffy if usable' the bracelet is foldover links with gold center links (jubilee). it has been in salt water and while still beautiful--definitely not a watch for a young buyer looking for years of service. a used watch is like a used car--get a new one from a real dealer unless you understand and can accept dissappointment--yes, they are much more expensive, and in my opinion not for most people unless you can pay cash!

Is buying a vintage 1601 for 2k and buying the dial you like a bad idea?

Datejust is one of the most Iconic look or design for Rolex watches. Vintage datejust keeps their values with time also. If purchased at the right price, they never lose value over time. Its a very hardy and versatile watch. Above are my view although I don't own a datejust. Thank you

My first DJ was an unexpected experience. A friend owed me $500 for rent and offered me his 1987 16253 to settle up. RSC told me the crystal, face and hands needed to be replaced, so I gave them the go-ahead. Total service price came to $1,350. The bracelet has a lot of sag to it, but I've no complaints about having a vintage Rolex that cost me only $1,850.
@3rumaih6 жыл бұрын
well. based on my experience. you must buy a vintage Rolex. I bought 2 watches 1st one is 36mm 1603 stainless steel. costed me 1450$ "auction on ebay" 2nd one is 26mm gold plated 1960's. costed me 800$ "Rolex service center told me to get rid of it because there are no spare parts for it. but i kept it anyway because it's cheaper than an iPhone.

Good analysis John...what is your view on picking up a Batman? Looks like the price has coming down although slightly...is this a long term collectible keeper in your opinion?
@JohnPWatches6 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph, it all really depends on the circumstances. For example, for someone that has ample expendable income, and likes the Batman, sure- I would recommend buying one now, wearing it, and holding it forever. Though, for someone that wishes to have one of two watches in their collection, and is not that into the Batman, I can not recommend it as there are more versatile watches on the market. This being said, I believe that certainly in 50 years, this watch will be one of the most desirable so long as Rolex and "vintage" are both going concerns. If you have Batman funds stashed away, and would like to take a 50 year gamble to see if you can outperform inflation- pick one up :)

Asked you said vintage Rolex vs new Rolex dj? Which be better if newer dj? Well here’s my opinion first 80’s to 90’ up to 2000 etc. they are good dj! But it’s depends on the conditions what you are buying? 2nd is how can you buy a new Rolex from the dealer ? It’s way too far waiting lists to buy! It’s like your dreaming winning a lottery to buy a new rolex! If there’s available any Authorize Rolex store why not to buy a new dj? Etc?

Thanks for the advice. What about vintage Speedmaster vs modern Speedmaster. Is there any noticeable difference in quality (other than the bracelet)?
@andrestenstrup10422 жыл бұрын
My advise is if you buy vintage Rolex datejust. Start trying a 36 mm watch first. It does not have to be a Rolex. Rolex datejust with strap, feels/looks smaller than if it was on a bracelet. It is ok to buy cheap, but you can expect a full service of it, and if you do it at an AD, then it can be like new for perhaps 700 to 1.000 US dollars. The crystal can get some scrates, but they can be polished away, or a new crystal is about 50 - 75 dollars I think. The downfall of saphire crystal is that fingerprint often easely gets on a saphire crystal. Not on a plastic crystal. And the vintage Rolex after full service is 100 % waterresistant so you can swim with it, and service is only needed every 5 - 10 years. But is is important that the service is very good. Therefore I recemend it to be done at an AD that replace worn out parts, gets a new crystal, new crown and gasket, so it is 100 % warerrestant and runs within 3 - 10 sec a day. MIne from 1968 has 5 years straigh run + 4 t o + 6 sec a day. I expect it to runs fine for anouter 3 - 5 years before service might be needed. An AD give you 2 years watenry on the watch in Europe. I have however heard that many AD in the States won´t service vintage Rolex watches. Atleast I headt that a lot 30 years ago. I do not know about now.

This video seems more like raising awareness of what to expect when buying any vintage watch rather than persuading people NOT to buy one. Vintage rolex are not 'cheap' by any stretch they may however be more cost effective than a newer model.
@JohnPWatches6 жыл бұрын
It's really aimed at the new collector that sees Rolex advertisements, tries one on brand new at the AD, and expects a 1601 to be the same. Believe it or not, it happens very often.

People need to know what they're getting into before buying ANY watch, especially vintage. That's not specific to DateJusts. I've yet to hear a reason not to buy one if you know what you're buying and you have the money. I could understand if you were saying they are overvalued or there's something wrong with a DateJust that people aren't talking about... but everything you said applies to vintage watches in general. If you expect a modern watch when buying vintage, you deserve to be disappointed for not doing your research.

I hope this video becomes part of the research for those new to watches.

basically the argument is 30+ year old datejust is is poorer quality and will have more wear than a new one, like that isn’t obvious?
@JohnPWatches5 жыл бұрын
It is not obvious to beginners or those that are not watch collectors. Not everyone wants to be collector, some people just want a Rolex- casual wearer. We still receive calls about this- people ask the difference.

Some people comment said this video is pointless but It’s not pointless it’s make sense for some people. I got a friend his dad is a Rolex vintage collector and every watch he buy he will do research on the watch history of the previous owner from the ad to make sure there no abuse from last owner and not badly treated watch . Also my other friend wanted to buy vintage Rolex because it’s cheap and I heard it’s was a 60s Rolex Dj. Dial and hands already wear off,hands already had Chip off with stain. Also the movement may not function well. Don’t buy this kind of watch just because it’s cheap. You will regret after buying it and down the road you will always heading down to service the watch.

I have a date just 1985. Don’t feel I am sacrificing because it is not a newer watch. Young generation thinks everything must be better and faster and more innovative. It’s just a watch. Enjoy what one can afford. For most people, a Rolex old or new is not an achievable purchase. You suggest one should get a newer Datejust. Well, what if I can’t afford a newer one? Especially since they are overpriced in today’s market. Yes, the bracelet may not be so good, so change it out to a nice leather strap. Rolex looks great with a leather strap

I just bought a 1980 16013 14K gold. Bracelet stretch is very minimal, but ya the jubilee is kinda cheap feeling, and the clasp is stamped. But the entire watch down to the bracelet and the dial and crystal looks brand new, not a stretch anywhere and the movement was serviced in 2019. I paid $3800 for a two tone Rolex so I don’t think that’s bad at all.
