To many people think their Rolex is so special when 99% are mass produced and not really collectable beyond the Name on the dial. Sure if yoh have a truly colectable Rolex then best not to refurbish. Not exactly. The concept is slightly different. It is like something that the aging process leaves on an object, of any kind, that is brand new. It is not necessarily a "damage." They fixed the broken winding stem, replaced the crystal and did a complete adjustment. Although they suggested replacing the dial, I declined. My existing dial is a gorgeous blue that I really like. My only regret is not replacing the date dial as the white background on mine is a slight bit discolored from age. The watch came back looking fabulous and I am very pleased with the results. Oh, as the jubilee bracelet was stretched, I sent that to a private repair service and it was restored for less than 1/2 the cost of a Rolex replacement.

@@BrockMcGoff I wouldn't buy a Datejust these days, but how much did it cost you (in total)? If it was 5 years from buying it to getting back from service then that's way longer than waiting. 'Waiting' is a moot point anyway, but pretty sure a DJ would not have much of a wait (5 years ago or now). It's still nothing like new (apart from the bracelet and dial which literally are!). Power reserve is a big one (guess you will say you don't care). As you mention cost, you now have a bracelet you don't need, a weird mix of parts, and the resale is shot. New would have a five year warranty, v two years on a service watch. You said you bought it because you liked the jangly bracelet and dial colour...... then re bought both! I did this to my dads old 1970's Tudor Oyster Prince Date Day 7017/0 the rolex case was scratched, the crystal was heavily scratched on the cyclops so i couldn't read the date well, it needed the movement serviced and some parts replaced. Fortunately the parts were available and i had the case polished up to remove the light scratches that were on it. The same principle as in the video. I wanted to wear the watch myself for the next 20-30 years like my dad and be able to put my own scrstches and wear on it and have my story told, i still have the old crystal(s) i had to get another due to me clipping the edge of a door frame and the tudor isn't sapphire so there was a small crack, so back to bucherer and paid for a new crystal. I did however keep the dial, turns out that even though bucherer is owned by Rolex had Bucherer sent it to rolex coming back to Germany they would have had to remove and replace the dial as the original which is in the watch has tritium hour markers and which means re-entry to germany the watch would have been stopped at the border and sent back and would have lost it, fortunately Bucherer has their own service department with Rolex technicians. 5-6 weeks later it returned and really happy i got the service, hopefully another few decades of time keeping with some servicing in-between will keep it running. Well done on your choices, you made them for your reasons and not what other peoples opinions would want you to do. I have also just bought my own automatic watch for the first time, an Omega HB-SIA speedmaster, having the tudor and being a Rolex case thats all the Rolex i want or need, can't be bothered with trying to get a new rolex, saving for a house so a rolex and the hassle of AD's not selling one as one is not worthy is not worth it, if i wanted one perhaps i can just pick up an old one thats used and needs a service.

Scratches and any type of marks on a watch only matter if they were made by YOU, they keep a history. If they belong to someone else, you did right, wipe them and start making them by your own. Enjoy it, it´s an amazing watch Cheers!

Good for you, I’d take working lume and water resistance over “patina” any day👏

Great video , I too have a 36mm Datejust and would like one day to get a full service and dial / hands replacement as my hands are non lume and the dial has lume ? The hands are replacement I suspect from a non lume dial , I would also like a jubilee bracelet to go with it , what’s the chances of that ? Are you able to request a bracelet as mine is on a leather strap .

So for the replacement bracelet, did you get the extra links or did you get it only with the links sized to your wrist?

They sized it down but included the extra links. It's a full bracelet.

You made a good choice on the dial colour in my opinion 👍 I’d have opted for the same.

Thanks! It was a tough one 😅

I’m a Jubilee die hard fan but I agree it looks more “dressy” even though it isn’t a dressy bracelet. Your watch looks incredible, congratulations

Just an advise, it's your watch, so do whatever you want to do with it, don't listen or be affected by other's opinion. We all have our own style, if you like how it looks, then that should how it look.

My Dad handed a watch down to me, and I had it refurbished/serviced, couldn’t be happier. If your dad gave you his truck and the windows didn’t roll up, you would get them repaired. This whole “Original Condition” thing assumes you plan to sell the watch, which I’m never doing with any of my current watches.

This looks really awesome, love the dial and bracelet choice. Do you get to keep the old dial?

This thinking of not restoring vintage watches comes mostly from collectors who own and buy watches with historical value. Watches for which originality is a big part of their value because they show what a watch that is no longer produced looked like when it was new or nearly new. For watches that you want to wear, this does not apply. Of course you feel more comfortable wearing a watch that has a secure bracelet and has gone through a pressure test. I don't see anything wrong with what you did, Brock, because this watch is one that you want to wear and use. Wear it in good health man! P. S. A good lesson for people to take from this experience might be that if you want to wear your watch daily, going new is probably better than going vintage. With the price you paid for the watch, plus the Rolex service, you would have probably been able to purchase a new Datejust.

Well said! I'd also recommend buying new if you have the budget and don't want vintage. But the total price of this (preowned + service) is still a couple thousand less than new, assuming you can get one from your AD.

Great video Brock, tough choice indeed but at the end of the day it’s all about wearing your watch and being happy so congrats on taking the step

As an enthusiast, I enjoy the look of a vintage patina watch, but it’s your watch, so do what you like. Don’t let anyone tell you what to do with YOUR watch.

I really like this combo. Nice watch.

Absolutely destroyed! Kidding. Whatever gets you wearing the watch. I'm curious what would have happened if you sent this for a "full overhaul" from a shop like rolliworks...
