For most brands grey market (new) is the way to go. For mid tier brands like Omega & Breitling where 40% discounts are the norm, it’s damn near the same price brand new vs used. That’s always been the case with Rolex, except very recently during the “shortage”... which I think is the point of the shortage. This applies to most Patek models as well, except models currently in short supply like the [overrated and overpriced] Nautilus. A good brick and mortar grey dealer will provide both an in store warranty as well as the original warranty card, even if they don’t advertise that they provide the factory warranty.

This is a great video John. I agree, if you are careful buying pre-owned it is always a great way to hold value...the same thing applies to cars. Another brand I have noticed loses value is Blancpain. Thank you for another interesting video :)

@treedillinger58016 жыл бұрын
Cars don’t hold value. Unless you’re talking about something very rare and you never drive it and you’re a mechanic and do all the work yourself, you’re talking about losing 90% of the value in 7-8 years. From then on they’re worth less than nothing, as any repair exceeds the value of the car.

In a sense you made the case for buying a new Breitling at 30-40% discount. One never made money on them, but at 40% one has a tolerable cushion and a decent watch, some with wrist presence, especially with the mesh or jamming with the always sweet Navi..

@ricchrono59075 жыл бұрын
I seldom buy brand new watches, the only brand new ones i have was a moonwatch 35th anni panda, and a zenith chronomaster open heart. the zenny I got it off with a discount, somewhere along those lines you mentioned and have been getting a lot of love from me, it's my grail watch. I suppose i would agree with most of the stuff you said and i respect the intention of giving headsup to people who might be dishing out 10s of thousands dollars to a watch. but at the end of the day, buying a watch has always been a lust over needs now. my way of seeing it, as long as you can get it lower than the norm at that time, and you really loving that piece to death, by all means just go for it. oh nice work by the way John, I like this vid of yours more than the other, the way you presenting the ideas is more natural, probably cos you were driving and there are more things for you to worry about instead of speaking perfectly hehehe. keep up with the work and stay true. respect.

I know what you mean, but to see a watch with a G-force gauge made for race car drivers is just mind blowing. The watches are prohibitively expensive to the regular Joe market like us, but the materials used and the creativity in engineering them is impressive. I liken the boutique to a museum of watch innovation or an art museum.

Of course (as you mention) this only matters if you are selling it. If you’re a flipper. All irrelevant if you are not. Go in with your eyes open and buy what you like. If you do sell and take a bit of a hit, who cares. Buying nice things costs a bit of money. Cars and tech cost money, why shouldn’t watches. It’s become an obsession over the last couple of years to only buy what gains value (hence the current Rolex tug fest).
@albertcheng11685 жыл бұрын
No it still does matter. Why would I spend 20 to 40% more to buy retail over new grey market? There is no reason unless you want to boutique experience for thousands of dollars more.

IWC tend to hold their value more closer to how hold it is. The older the model is, further from release date, the less it becomes worth. Great watches, just the trend.

Any watch that is high in circulation will depreciate from their new price. You'll never be able to sell at retail price unless the watch is a limited edition that isn't available and even if they aren't they may still not hold value. Watches are terrible investment as a whole. The only way to make money is to buy them cheap from unsuspecting sellers and flip them. I found a Rolex Skyrocket for $200 when it's worth $2000+.
