At least it seemed (to me) to be autogaining. But no oversampling is an odd place to fall flat, even Analog Obsession has oversampling and those are FREE. Anyway, there are enough "air band" tools like Luftikus or Slate Fresh Air (both of which are or have been free) out there, three digit pricetags on this is just not happening.

What rubs me the wrong way about the BSA plugs is they’re literally just copycats of plugins that already exist. Oxygen is probably the most egregious considering Fresh Air is free lol

It's just a guy making chains in pro tools, and then he asks a dev to put it in a plugin. I don't really understand the process, it seems near impossible to come up with something new and interesting that way. I just learned C++ for plugin development and I mean, that's honestly an easier way to make fun plugins than just endlessly recreating things that already exist in pro tools... You gotta play around and mess with the guts of audio code to come up with fun stuff, because happy accidents never happen otherwise

Sometimes I wonder, does it really matter with all this alias talk? If someone uses this only use one on a master bus or on 6 busses, will this really matter? I wonder how many professional engineers made tracks with all these different plugins and how much alias they added over 40-160 tracks, and at the end, we love the music.... but it seems we get so caught up on the 'technical side' of things like alias. (I get caught up too) That's why I'm posing this question, does it really matter?
@mrcoatsworth429
@mrcoatsworth429 9 ай бұрын
That is a good question and the answer is probably no. There is this guy, Dan Worral, who seems to be somewhat of an KZbin audio community god. He's an expert with these technical questions. Then I saw he has his own music on spotify and I checked it out. I didn't think it sounded good. Maybe just not my style, but I was very underwhelmed by the mixing. So there's that.

Aliasing is really bad if you can hear it, that's about it imo. I just made my first synth plugin, and without anti-aliasing, it sounded very distorted and weird if I played treble notes. So that's a case where it really matters - I don't wanna have a synth where you can't hear which notes you are playing. But if you don't hear anything funny and you just see something in a spectrum, honestly who cares at that point

I agree for the oversampling. However, I think that saying that what the plugin does can be done with other plugins is not an argument. An engineer can use a plugin or a machine not only for the technical things that it allows to do, but also for the way it does it. For example, you often talk about the UI. There’s a lot of plugins that do the same thing but with a different UI, and sometimes is the UI that makes the difference. In the case of Oxygen, I think that the approach is way more musical and natural compared to other exciters, and I think that it’s actually a more important thing than it seems. Good video, by the way.

I agree that doing things other plugins can isn't necessarily an issue. But the reason Wytse shows this, is because they provlaim to be unique and also charge premium prices for it. And that's the whole issue.
@sm5574
@sm5574 Жыл бұрын
Dan Worrall does that, too. "I don't see any reason for this to exist." I mean, you could say that for half the DAWs out there. The question is not why it should exist, but why you may want to buy it, and those reasons may go beyond simply what effect the plugin achieves.

That's the point of these videos. Using a plugin and listening to what it does is just one part of the video. Another aspect is whether the claims and price tag attached to it are worth it. Maag eq4 from Plugin Alliance is available for 29-39$ in any sale (which happens many times every year). Slate Fresh Air is absolutely free. Any stock eq with an adjustable high shelf, along with a decent saturation plugin (Softube Saturation Knob is a free one) will give you the desired effect at a much lower price point. The point of the video is that if you understand how something is being done, you can probably save some money by doing the same thing with tools already available to you and use that money for something that is actually worth it.

It sounded good to me, and seems you also didn't object its sound in tests, so is the lack of oversampling truly an issue? If it sounds good, it is good IMO. Foldback can even introduce some richness and enhance presence (very highs start to be present in high mids and translate better to phones laptops etc), obviously not always. I use Decapitator all the time and it is known for its lack of oversampling - but I can tune it so it is perfect for my sounds!
@qoiet6049
@qoiet6049 Жыл бұрын
The question though, is, why you would need something that is a high shelf eq paired with an aliasing saturator. You could use a basic eq (the shelf is not particularly complex) together with decapitator (which aliases less than this)

I think they are using the term “unique” loosely in the colloquial sense-as in “uncommon,” not in the literal formal sense meaning “proprietary”. They mean their process is not the same thing that most people do, rather than that they are the only ones doing it this way. Doesn’t save their plugin by any means tho
@theAshesofDecember1

I own a number of bsa plugins because I’m a fan or Jordan. To say that any one plugin is unique is a bit of a misnomer, and for everyone saying other plugins can do this, it’s true. The difference those guys do is package a number of tools together in one tool to create and simple, one knob solution instead of needing to stack comps and eqs together with saturation to achieve the same thing. They’re tools of convenience. And for those that say they’re priced too hard, I do agree. However, they regularly have sale prices. I don’t think I’ve paid more than $20 per plugin.

There is nothing new on any plugin, nothing is particularly exciting and my initial thoughts on these are always "Oh wow, i could load up 2 plugins instead, have more control and can do the exact same or even more". Also stuff is always missing, like a blend knob here, oversampling there... And the prices for the pure lack of creativity, uniqueness, functions and features, are absolutely bonkers. Also the plugins are just 2 steps in one plugin done. You still have to do the 2 changes in here, but now it might have reduced the amount of plugins you loaded up by 1, even tho I doubt the processing power will be less... Good video 👍🏻 Unfortunately the dude that runs or probably is the company is known for being a pretty greedy person not caring much about the users or even his own community. As he started to show off his first two plugins there was an insane sh*Tatort about the pricing and he just replied to a lot of comments in a relatively rude and careless way. He went from a person with good mixing advices that I used to watch to instantly unsubscribed with just the way he handled his user-feedback. Cheers!

No oversampling in modern plugins it's at least crazy. There is no debate for oversampling...it was 6-7 years ago, but last years there is no serious developer that creates plugins with no oversampling. End of story...

I"m sorry but this plugin gets my digital sounds to sound analog after downward compression. I leave "control" alone as it compresses too hard imho...but saturation and oxygen knobs are usually cranked up all the way unless they begin to sound digitally harsh then I dial back a bit.

Oversampling isnt a necessarly a must. Its simple as that: i liked the sound. Wether or not you can replicate this nice sound, you havent prooven. In my oppinion there are very subtle things that make me want a "preampdisortion /distortion" Eq-plugin. And i liked this one. Oversampling is done with Linear Filters, and for some reason i really dislike Linear Filters. I found myselve turning off oversampling on other Plugin just cause i disliked it more than i liked the cleanness.. Anyway. I like the sound, and dont think im biased, i expected some cheap ass hyped Compressor-sounds. And imediatly found, ohh, ohh, it added a nice weight to the Highs. thats my OPPINION. NO CLAIM . PEACE

There's free plugins with oversampling, if one dev can do it, so can the company asking for expensive shitty plugins

@@loco3975 aahm, i said: wether or not you can replicate the nice Sound this plugin has, that wasnt prooven. I didnt say anything other than that. You reacted to my response as if i said you cant replicate a Equalizer with a bit Distortion. That wasnt what i ment, atleast not clearly, i spoke about reaching this class of SOUND. So, again, wther or not Whitesea can replicate such a HIGHCLASS of SOUND, he hasnt prooven.

Oversampling is a must. Especially if you are mixing professionally.

@@matt_nyc_audioengineer i found myselve turning oversampling OFF when i had the CHOICE in a Plugin. I didnt like it.. so: what you like, i probably feel different about it. I like hard hitting transients, and linear Filters (equalizers) impair Transients. Im not saying this cause somebody said it, i say it because i listend, and felt that way. Again, there are also pros to oversampling, the smooth clean sound, but this tiny amount of smeard Transients. hmm, not shure if its worth it for me, just to gain a bit of Preampdistortion .

@@erewrw1906 For sure to each their own, it's a highly personal thing. I feel quite the opposite lol. I oversample any plugin that gives me the option. Yes, it can take away transients but I just compensate for the loss. Aliasing to me makes a record sound dull and boring. No matter how good it's mixed to me if there is to much aliasing it just sounds..... flat. That may be a better word. There is such a thing as too much oversampling, especially if you don't know how to compensate for it.

This guys plugins are so barebones and basic I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re reskinned freeware with a pretty UI and attempted aspirational marketing. Nothing they put has any use in a well rounded plugin collection

Oversampling isn't something you should use by default. There's been a few times when I've turned it off, or down because it sounded worse to my ears than when on. Depends on how well the Dev implements it I suppose. Also, if you mix at higher sample rates, you don't need OS altogether and plugins will sound better in general.
@adsm6464

But not even having the option in a high frequency specific plugin priced at $100+ is a bit dodgy all the same, your point is solid though.
@davejohnsonmusic

@@adsm6464 Jordan from BS uses all their plugins and he's got pretty decent album credits. I'm pretty sure if the lack of OS was going to be an issue for him, he would've had the devs add it. I think he partly wanted to start this software company, so he could make plugins that would simplify his own workflow, by using just one plugin that does a few things. Agreed they are probably way too pricey for what they are, but he's been running sales on BS products pretty regularly lately, so you can snag these for way lower than retail. This is his first venture into the plugin business, so I'm sure he's going to continue to make some mistakes and adjustments along the way.
