To speak on Lyn Mode and story: 1. Lyn Mode is still helpful to this day due to how different things have become. In my experience, I found it after playing the 3DS games, and Lyn Mode helped me learn about Rescue mechanics, Canto, a lack of a hub or overworld, and the use of different promotion items depending on class. Even if a lot of it goes over the basics, I still say it’s worthwhile for new players whose only experience with FE is on the Switch, for example. 2. In my opinion, there are two ways to get hooked on a story: the plot and the characters. While the plot isn’t as rich as some other games, the characters more than make up for it. I still remember laughing at the interactions and banter between the three lords, thinking Raven looked cool and (on a second playthrough) being shocked that he was recruitable, getting emotional at the CG of Eliwood crying over his father, etc. That’s something I think all the FE games have going for them: even with plots that are barebones or just suck, the characters can make up for it through their individual moments, personality, and supports.

Kishuna's gimmick is so damn cool. It's a shame FE hasn't revisted the idea of an unit being so wack that it forces the player to play outside of their confort zone just because they happen to be on the map.

The Magic Seal feels like something they very much would/should have done in Engage, even as just a thing for one map, have there be certain zones on the map where a unit can't use tomes... on the other hand this might've conflicted with Micaiahs inheritable that gives Silence-immunity...

@@noiseisgold3n42 Kishuna never trivalizes a whole map. There's always space to work around him, so your magic users can at least do healing, either at long range with Physic or up close. Even if you've invested into every magic user possible, you have alternatives.

As someone who played only the 3ds games and 3h, fe7 was my first "old" fire emblem game, I instantly fell in love with it, I think it has some of the best stretch of maps in the series from 16 to 22, also the character moments really got me, Eliwood hanging onto his father's hand as if to will him back to life after the events of Dragon's gate is really powerful imo

More complex mechanics does not necessarily equal better. For me, FE7 is the quintessential FE experience, where all the core FE mechanics are present, but none of the distractions. If I were to rank FE games, FE7 would probably be in my top 3. This is probably a hot take, but I would much rather go back and replay FE7 than 3 Houses, for example.

With this being my the first installment like most of us across the ocean, FE7 feels like the purest form of Fire Emblem. Lyn mode was a solid tutorial to introduce new people to the game to prepare you for the brutal reality of permadeath, and the mechanics like the weapon triangle and flier’s bow weakness are at some of their most basic compared to mechanics in future installments that changed them for better or worse. And of course with it being the first game, the characters are so nostalgic for a lot of us. I love picking this game back up again and again for its sheer simplicity.

A stealable one in the Fog of War in the Uhai Map on the Dread Isles. Finally, the last one on Cog of Destiny,which again, you can steal. So there are actually 6 Light Runes. Something neat about "Mark" I noticed, is they actually could affect Gameplay in minor amounts. Depending on the Tacticians Rank and Birthday, like their month (and bloodtype in JP) could add bonuses to units who share the same affinity in things like evasion, and hit rate. I thought it was kind of neat you could use the tacticians birthday to benefit a group of units in Eliwood/Hector's story mode. I think the max was about 10% if the tactician rank got ten stars?

Love FE7 to pieces, as it was my introduction to the series, but I'd be extremely skeptical of a FE7 remake. They'd probably make the avatar a playable unit, and they'd turn shove Lyn into everything. I like Lyn... everyone likes Lyn. But because everyone likes Lyn, a remake would basically turn her into the fanservice icon she's become, instead of the bright-eyed sacaen daughter of the plains that she once was.

One aspect you didn't mention enough about Lyn mode: it is just a cool story with charming characters. It is simple but it is effective. And, importantly to me, it introduces all characters and they all feel like they matter. Because the cast is so small, most of them continue to have input in the narrative until the end, and all of them have their epilogues. One of the biggest appeals of Fire Emblem is that every unit is a character with its own personality and story and Lyn mode showcase that very effective. You are familiar with every character by the end of the mode which is is fun. I think part reason Lyn mode get such a bad rep in the fandom is because the community as a whole holds Hector Hard mode as the only "true and valid" FE7 experience. A lot of the discussion around the game is based exclusively on that mode to the detriment of everything else. I've even see people saying that playing Lyn mode before HH is cheating, which is ludicrous. That kinda of discourse inherent devalue Lyn mode as something superfluous and irrelevant for the game, instead of it being integral part of the game. Speaking of which, Hector mode is the true experimental mode I actively dislike. Not because the mode itself is bad, of course, but because I think it actively harmed the game. The main problem is that it is just not different enough from Eliwood mode. It is functionally just Eliwood mode+. A couple of chapters are different and some of the cutscenes are changed but the story is largely the same and you have more gaiden chapters to play with. The end result is that after you unlock it you don't really have much of a reason to play Eliwood mode again as Hector is basically the same but better, so the main mode of the game gets overshadowed. To makes matter worse, I don't think Hector mode actually holds up as a narrative either. Because the story is largely still the same, even though the protagonist is supposedly now Hector, the story is still largely about Eliwood. It is just an awkward situation all round. I think they realized this because because by the next game they tried again to have multiple protagonists, but their different modes are actually different enough so you can have more of a reason to play one or the other.
@lpfan4491
@lpfan4491 Ай бұрын
Honestly, the best way to play the game is to patch the game to make route select accessible from the start and have hard mode apply its bonuses to Lyn mode and Eliwood mode too. I actually think Lyn mode is fairly fun to play, but the forced tutorial on normal mode actively makes me want to sleep. And Hector mode is just not fun. It inconsistently ranges from "essencially just as easy as Eliwood mode" to "actual hell", so there is no reason to play it in my opinion outside of the exclusive content.
@heatth1474
@heatth1474 Ай бұрын
Honestly, I never finished Hector hard mode because it is too annoying. But when replaying I find hard to justify not playing Hector normal because of all that exclusive content. And the fact that the much of the exclusive content don't really have anything to do with Hector just annoys me. The Kishuna thing is a big example but even minor stuff like Karla? Why would she be Hecor locked? You can still recruit her boyfriend and brother as Eliwood. It is like they just decided to pick some characters at random and locked behind the extra mode.
@lpfan4491
@lpfan4491 Ай бұрын
Something amusing about Karla is that they really wanted to make extra sure she is routelocked. 1: She obviously only appears on Hector, that we all know. But... 2: Speaking to her is also Hector locked. If you romhack to make her appear for Eliwood, you cannot interact with her without further editing. And... 3: If you interact with her, then the event after the battle between her and Bartre...is also Hector locked. The interaction just awkwardly ends without properly resolving if you don't patch that event too.

@@GreatBeanicusI've never been a fan of often the fanbase at large forgets that the GBA trilogy was a sort of "return to basics" step for the franchise that reestablished momentum for the series when they came out. Hell the main villians themselves are all individually the major tropes the series has seen divided into each game. (Zephiel the evil conqueror, Nergal the evil cultist, the Demon King the ancient evil.) With the exception of Fates, these games are pretty much the last games in the franchise that stick to simplistic lore and worldbuilding and that's something that needs to be remembered, especially since Intsys wrote the stories the way they did because they understood the limits of the GBA.

I didn't realize that the simplicity of the GBA FE games was something that was widely critiqued. I started the SRPG genre with Final Fantasy Tactics when I was 1o or 11 or so. That was a hell of a deep end to jump into, but I loved it and while I had some... false starts on finishing FFT, I had done so before playing FE7. I was 15 when it came out and I got it shortly after. I had also played a handful of other SRPGs by that time, including Shining Force 1 and 2, which are pretty similar to the GBA FE games. I found the simplicity of FE7 to be pretty fun, and I tend to view it as a measuring stick for the complexity level of other games, although I'm of the opinion that a well executed simple game has a lot of value.

FE7's self-insert being as hands-off as it was is, especially in hindsight, very refreshing. Every chapter having one character that can pop in and say something to you was a fun little surprise. Was gonna call it mini-game but there were little to no hint who would come and say hello each chapter. I think the best way to do paralogues is to reward people for doing all of them. Especially if the reward is backstory for the main villain. It's not like FE6 where you miss out on crucial story if you don't get all the paralogues unlocked and done. And backstory for the villain is a more interesting reward than the little snippets you got from three houses' paralogues. Although that might be because accessing all of FE7's paralogues is a bitch on account of actually killing Kishuna.

I had to look up ways to unlock all the goodies in Hector Mode. The fact that it was technically still Eliwood's story, but added so much extra content blew my mind that this was a game I'd played as a kid in the early 2000's and it was only years later I'd learned there was THIS MUCH content that I'd missed as a kid because I was a foolish kid Lyn mode gets some unnecessary hate, but I loved how it functioned as a a nice introduction to a band of characters, even if only Lyn and the twins really participated later. People complain Lyn mode waters down the whole game experience, but I like to look at it this way: without a tutorial to teach 12 year old me what a strategy game was, I never would have gotten into the series (or genre as a whole). I'm not unique in this. There are many people out there that must have loved the game because FE7 must have sold well enough that they realized localizing future games was a good idea, transforming FE into the well-known IP it is today. So much so that we can argue and disagree that there are too many representative characters in the Smash series

Quintessence? DO understand! I'd have thought Fates and Engage with their wacky stage hazards would've had something like Kishuna reappear and even expanded upon with areas where physical attacks don't work, but I guess not. As someone who started with FE7 and played it many many times back in the day turning me into the ultimate FE enjoyer I am today, I used to be someone who looked down on it for being the popular pick despite being more of a mixed bag than what came before and after, same with FF7, but thankfully I and a lot of others mellowed out over both over time. A well researched and articulated video, even if it might exacerbate even more that FETubers "are GBA worshippers." One more understated quality is that this might've been the only time in FE when dragons were presented as a real apocalyptic threat, whereas in others you start slaying them left and right by the first third. The game not only told you that it's the end of the world if the dragon's gate is unsealed, but also directly showed it with the brief glimpse during the first trip there and the Fire Dragon being a formidable final boss, save for Luna. This directly contradicts with FE6 though, so I can see why it's understated in the first place.

Lyn mode might be on the overbearing side of tutorials, but I think it's easy for "in-group" mentality to make people forget just how abstract some of Fire Emblem's mechanics are, as well as just how oblivious some people can be. For the series' first attempt at a guided tutorial it manages to cover almost every basic mechanic and lean into some suggested strategy, without fully dictating every single move (though it does a lot of that). Later games eventually had better tutorials, sure, but before this we just got "here are some units, go capture the objective," with MAYBE some gameplay relevant information hidden in houses or villages. In a world moving away from paper manuals as the primary method of information delivery, Lyn Mode was a welcome sight, even if I personally feel the early Eirika chapters in FE8 did it better.

It’s been like 6 years since I first played fe7, and it’s still one of my favorite games of all time. While Genealogy of the Holy War is my personal favorite, Fe7 is a close 2nd and the Fire Emblem Game I play the most. The story is simple yet effective and shows a great journey and this is coming from someone who doesn’t need great stories to enjoy games. And the characters? Easily one of the best cast in the series. Eliwood is my favorite lord alongside Sigurd and it’s such a joy seeing the interactions between the three lords. I also really love the map designs as a good chunk of them reward fast play. That’s my personal favorite way to play Fire Emblem, which is why Fe4 is my favorite game. Overall great video and I agree with everything stated!

One thing I also think that's missed, is that FE7 is the first game to have more progressive sliding difficulties as well as a selectable lord. I feel like ENM - > HNM -> EHM -> HHM is a much more balanced and nuanced difficulty slider than something like FE6 normal to hard mode or FE9's difficulties. Heck, I don't even think FE11 with its 5 difficulties does it as well as FE7 in this regard. In my eyes, it would take until Fire Emblem Fates Conquest to reach the same tier of perfection that sort of reached in FE7 with you having a fully customizable lord (I don't care what people say about Corrin's character, Corrin is an amazing lord from a gameplay perspective), and progressive difficulties with none of the difficulties feeling like particularly large difficulty jumps. As for corrections, I think the only slight one I'd add is this: the Lyn mode argument for the Japanese doesn't even have to happen, because you can skip Lyn mode in the Japanese version if you link FE6 up with FE7. So IS was just bringing their A-game for FE7 in general. I like FE7, I think it's a good game, and a lot of the pushback I think that happened against it was that people did that in a form of weird elitism because it was the first game that was easily accessible to play. My first Fe was FE4, and I still think that FE7 is one of the better ones in the franchise. To a certain extent, I get why it hasn't been remade, it's still good and there's still places you can access it. If it got remade, I'd love to see it done keeping most of the same features but adding in some of the stuff that was in the original plotline like letting Lyndis use Durandal. That's such a cool thing that got dropped.

All I'm just gonna say is as someone who isn't that super big into the series and only played like a handful of games, I still like Lyn even after all these years later. Although I will admit it is interesting to see some concepts from this game that either do come back in future games or aren't in future games. That being said though the next fire emblem game has to be better than engage.

FE7 was, as planned, my introduction to the franchise, I played it to death, and I still love its story and characters (Rebecca my beloved). Over time, I played a lot more FE entries, and the more I played, the more I realized how FE7 is a sacred middle ground were everything clicks and comes together. The Tellius games have likable characters, but also new mechanics that felt underwhelming and a slower flow of battle. The 3DS entries focus too much on avatars, supports and "raising" your units. FE6 is a great transition from Kaga to the modern formula, but the characters don't have too much depth and thought. FE8 adds skills and has great characters, but the game is insultingly easy. The biggest downside of Blaze it Sword is from its terrible support system, but that was also present in 6 & 8, other than that (and its REALLY hidden gaiden inside a gaiden), it holds up as one of the most decent entries.

I had started a text based Role Play site based on Blazing Blade. It started super basic where eventually the story had evolved far beyond the Elibe games went. We included classes from Sacred Stone then eventually added things from Awakening. Over the years it felt more like a real progression than the actual series took. As fans of the series we recognized the positive of the series and added it to our formula. Out of the Fire Emblem RP sites it was one of the top ones for years, IMO we did a better job of keeping elements from global classic FE with a mixture of modern FE that both could enjoy if it was a game.

It's still so good to this day, I really don't get why people are so mean to FE7. Like, yeah, it's a little simple, sure, but it's so solid at the core of what the franchise is, the characters are really fun, and the plot, while maybe not super interesting, is good enough to carry the runtime. And as you said, the Hector mode flip to keeping it focused on Eliwood's quest, but putting Hector's emotions to the player's attention is a great thing, especially if the player wanted to learn more about him where they might not have in their first run. Admittedly, I'm also fully in my nostalgia bias, since it's literally the game that made me love SRPGs, so I mean, it deserves the praise for making the genre a little more visible here, whereas people might not have played Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, etc. FE7 is ALWAYS a game I can come back to, do a run, and just relax. Hope you had a good NYs, Ghast!

The narrative of Hector mode, the optional (and hellish difficult to unlock'em) and that freaking Luna that can simply rekt everything you worked for without any solution better than prying, is what i remember of that game, everytime i think about it. Even today, after having played many (too much maybe) times the game, checked many times the wikis, searched both for news personal challenge or simply informations, i still discover something about a character or another. To think a game made in 2004, on a GBA, is *that* good and durable is just... wonderful. What i'd like to, is to see/understand the original version. Because for every games, there's sometime a LOT of things can change, and those changes can be quite big (Think of Black Knight from PoR and the warp powder, or even the meaning of Heritor of Arcadia from Shadow of Valencia). Having the comparaison between the original vision of the creators, and what we get, finding what work have been done, understanding the point of view, the intention, and how it's influenced our vision and understanding of the licence, would be amazing.

On the gaiden storyline. I mostly agree it is a coo aspect of the game, but I do think it is harmed by the stupid obscure requirement. I actually think the "get Nills to level 7" one is the worst. It is the easiest one if you know about it, but it is the one it is hardest to find by yourself, I think. It have been a while so I might be misremembering it, but I remember to always have to grind before seizing the castle at the end of Lyn route to get Nills to the right level, even if I used him in ever chapter and every turn. And I was never a max efficiency player, I wasn't beating any records regarding turn count, but still, there was never enough experience if I play the game without grinding. I am honestly not that against obscure gaiden requirements (though I think they should be hinted in game), but when you have to do something counter intuitive for no reason something have gone wrong. It is made worse by the fact that many of the other requirements involve low turn count, so functionally the opposite requirement to leveling up Nills. I also hate how the full thing is locked the Hector mode for seemingly no reason.

FE7 was my introduction into the series proper (after Melee of course). I remember play that game ad-naseum followed then by FE8. We even got the Nintendo Power guide book to FE7 which is how we learned about the gaiden chapters and split map and recruitments. I'm pretty sure that's also where we learned about abusing the rescue mechanic to grant a character pseudo-infinite Ninian's Grace for arena abuse. I'm pretty sure it was a trick featured in one of the last pages of the guide.

I love this game so much because this introduced me to the series. Lyn will always be best girl for me in Fire Emblem. If I ever got to live the day that this game is remade on a better console, I hope they would not change this much. Same story, same gameplay but with better battle animations (Not saying that the GBA sprites are not good, they are GODLY for that console) and give us those fully animated cutscenes. Jaffar one shotting Leila and Eliwood using Durandal on Ninian will be epic.

The maps where I had to deal with Kishuna's sheer presense are still etched into my memories more than 20 years after playing FE7 on release. I'm practically *_begging_* them to bring back boss units with weird gimmicks like Kishuna, or to go further back Gharnef's bizarre immunity to everything but an extremely specific weapon/weapon type. Not saying everything needs to be balls to the wall crazy, but I feel like they'd be amazing if properly foreshadowed to allow the player to adjust for even the *possibility* of running into them later.

Blazing Sword is the third Fire Emblem game I played (after Shadow Dragon and 3 Houses) and it is by far my favourite. There are a lot of critics of this game, but it's always stood out to me as being the perfect mix of rich and unique, while not being overly complex or relying on a single unique gimmick. 3 Houses, for example, is definitely not a bad game, but they lean too heavily into the explore the monastery time, and in order to push the "different routes" approach, they reuse way more content (maps, story, etc.) than I think they should have. Replaying it can feel boring, especially slogging through the pre-timeskip where the missions are all the same despite the game implying that the different houses got different missions. The new things that Fe7 tried out seemed much more polished to me, and were supported by the existing mechanics in a way that I feel was much more natural and led to more replayability. I'm glad you brought up Lyn mode, because while it is a tutorial and can feel like annoying for veterans, my first time playing I was annoyed at the basic "here's how you walk, here's how you attack" tutorial being forced on me, but it then showcased a lot of more complex and new mechanics that I wasn't familiar with and would likely have missed. Even on a later playthrough where I went back to the normal mode for a run, I was reminded of a couple things I had forgotten about. I'm really happy to see this game getting more positive attention! Thank you!
