Thank you. I had planned to put a deck Spring 2020, but Covid. Then I was going to put a deck Spring 2021, but lumber prices. (pulls hair out) My house is single level, but is almost a full story off the ground in the back & there's a door underneath the house that can't be blocked, so I'm a little stymied.

Beautiful work. I have a 3 level house, with the lowest level being a below ground basement suite. Right now, there’s a small uncovered patio there that we’d like to replace with a covered outdoor kitchen. Would there be any limitations, or anything I’d need to consider given the basement suite and its entrance are there?

We use to have a deck when we bought our house but it was cheaply and unprofessionally done so my husband got rid of it and was going to build one himself. It's been 5 years since, now I'm handicapped which causes me much pain to go down two very high steps to get to the yard. Have you worked on projects for people with knee issues?

I wonder if people do the deck or pavers right off the house because they want to utilize their grass space. I notice in a lot of your and designs, you remove a majority of the grass. But for families who want a nice big grass area, what do you recommend? Thx!! Love your designs!!

It really depends on what my clients would like. I could still design the space to maximize the lawn it would be easy with pavers. The deck would take up more space. I hope that helps

The deck over the pool is cool, as well as some decks on slopes. But if I heard right, they were, in UK, made popular only by the TV garden renovations of Alan Titchmarsh. All about creating a WOW on TV within 2 weeks of work, therefore resort to building instead of gardening. Decks have a shorter lifetime than ground hardscapes. In my opinion, lawn is the space to use for play, party, garden office. Move items around a bit, so it can regenerate. If the burden is too much for lawn, a semi-hardscape patio, such as gravel lawn/meadow, or irregular slabs with low vegetation in the joints, is the way to go.

Between our underground utility access & the roots of our Huge Blue Spruce tree, we opted for a deck & boardwalk. The Concrete sidewalk was popping due to the tree roots, so we tore it out & did a floating deck. All decking was done with composite materials. The downspout was run underground with pvc & supplies the spruce tree with rain water & snow melt. We also had it done the summer before the lockdowns (2019) & our jaw still is dropping at the price we paid compared to what it would cost now- More than double! We still have a lot more landscaping to do. Hardscaping/retaining walls, the walkout under the deck needs dug out because we extended the deck when we built it. Now it's Ridiculous how hard it is getting anyone out to give us bids & when they do come out, they never get back with us. How do you convince a landscaper that your project is worth their time when you can only afford to do it in stages?????

I would have liked to hear your suggestions for family with members with mobility issues. Doorways and other exits from or to the home can't be too narrow or too high above grade. Areas for fire pit, conversations, food preparation etc should be at adaptive heights without multiple changes in " deck" heights. Thank you for your consideration.

I'm currently getting designs for our entire block and I'm interested to see what they come back with... I note that most of the homes featured in this video and many others drop down to the destination(s). I'm in the opposite situation where I have limited space at ground level and have to go up a hill past two large retaining walls to create usable space. hopefully with a clever design it won't seem like too much an effort... maybe I should put something interesting (or maybe a rest spot) for the uphill journey haha
@BackyardDesignGuy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nel, let me know if u need help with designing the space? I love working on design dilemmas like it sounds like u have. Waterfalls are common with the situation you are describing.
@nelclarke40172 жыл бұрын
@@BackyardDesignGuy Thanks for getting back to me, I didn't think my comment would be noticed. I appreciate your offer, I'm in Australia though and currently have a landscaper developing plans. We agreed on having a water feature of some kind and plants cascading over to soften the retaining walls. The side where the 'steps' have to go is actually on an easement so I can't have a permanent structure... going to go with sandstone steppers, with a deco granite path circling up to the flat part of hill at the back. All I can really visualise up there (mind you the highest point is taller than our 2 storey house) is a fire pit/lounge area... maybe a hammock in the trees. Not sure if that'll be enough incentive to make the climb but I'm open to suggestions. If i had a bigger budget I'd so be putting a hot tub up there!

These designs make me chuckle, the seating space away from house but also is close to neighbors. That means no privacy during relaxing discussions.
@BackyardDesignGuy2 жыл бұрын
Interesting point of view. I personally have a freestanding structure away from my house and it is not an issue with privacy or conversation moments. If u don't do the structure away at least consider doing some destination..... Super important ❤

It’s unfair to compare that tiny uninspired deck to that massive stone patio with living area. I built a large multilevel deck on a sloped lot with two living areas, and it was, and 30 years later, still is, the talk of neighborhood. My only criticism is that a deck requires much more maintenance than a stone patio, and has required structural work as the steel fasterners have rusted over the years. If I had a flat piece of property (like my patio-builder neighbor) I would put in a stone patio. But you are comparing apples and oranges.

Dude!!! What you do goes MILES past landscaping and is ACTUALLY construction of new buildings and would require much more licenses and code checks and actual licensed employees than the majority of landscaping companies. What you do is considered general contracting. It actually hurts Landscaping companies cause now you’re doing everything that used to be shared. A client can get a new patio, a new open air Building with power and plumbing and have it all landscaped. I like seeing what your doing but I had to share my mind since Im a landscaping company BD.
@BackyardDesignGuy3 жыл бұрын
Its time to give the client what they need... Outdoor Living ... Who cares about a few different licenses just get them and provide your clients in your area with what they really want and need in this modern world. A true Outdoor Living space that will provide a life time of memories for their family and friend circle. It is really time ... Yes, its more then landscaping and is closer to General Contracting but that is what people want and need
