This would cost an arm and a leg, though. At least from the examples you’re showing. 50-100k easily! Do you have any examples for the struggling, middle-class labor communities?
@kkgibbs17 ай бұрын
As I watched this, I was thinking of plenty of low budget ways to accomplish some of these projects but it will involve lots of back-braking labor to be done yourself. If that isn't an option, it's going to cost a pretty penny.
@tommieboi7075 ай бұрын
@kkgibbs1 I'm going to try and tackle the project by myself. I can tell that it will be backbreaking just like you said. But I would save a ton in labor.

My backyard is not pretty but it is very efficient. I enter it through the backdoor of the house. If I look to the right, I have reached at my destination. If I look to the left, I have reached my destination. Ten feet straight ahead is the end of my destination, a tall, stucco block wall. I even have a speaker (I turn on the radio inside and open the window).

Hello from Austin, TX. Let me tell you about insects... Spiders, scorpions, mosquitoes are a constant battle. So I try to focus on not creating a bunch of hiding places for spiders/scorpions with too many soft surfaces, etc. This may not sound glamorous, but bug lights are helpful at night. Tiki torches and citronella help, but are not a solution for mosquitos here. We usually have to pay for professional yard spraying that is supposed to last the summer season. But, I've been trying out the Thermacel systems and I think they are working.
@andreadamewood4155 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Samantha. We have spider, mice, and mosquito issues here!! We definitely have to keep hidy holes and fabrics to a minimum! Which type of Thermacell products are you using for mosquitoes? I have a small backpacking one that works well enough for a small eating space. I'm curious which ones you've had success with for larger spaces.
@splashluvallover Жыл бұрын
I use the thermacell mosquito repeller. It’s a little device about the size of a beer can and it works pretty good for repelling mosquitos. And it’s inexpensive! About $20 a piece. I have a couple and I just turn them on and set them on the side tables around my gazebo.

marigolds, peppermint, basil, lavender, to name just a few plants that repel several bad guys and invite good pollinators to your gardens. Also, maintaining nature with an eye on spacing, drainage, etc. (I have several areas with hardscapes and retaining walls.) What I don't understand with these modern versions of how to make your outside like your inside, is the appreciation for nature and enjoying it by being mindful of things like privacy and natural shade and the 'ecosystem' of your property and making it beautiful by utilizing it's shape and orientation (with destinations) and using basic things like retaining walls, stepping stones, etc.

Thanks for sharing! Here in Wisconsin I just fogg the yard with 'cutter' brand spray when I'm about to have a gathering. Then just fire & those bug candles. Usually find nice looking candles at 'At Home' or 'Homegoods'

Great ideas, thanks for including small yards! One cautionary tale though. A relative paid good money to install a water fall with a small collection pond similar to one you featured. The sound of flowing water was so loud it hindered conversation! And then there's the mosquito issue. There are inexpensive store bought fountains that can serve the same purpose that are quieter, cheaper, & can be moved to different places which can be nice! I hate not having flexibility (I get bored) & my patio is rarely the same each summer season!
@BackyardDesignGuy2 жыл бұрын
Thank u for the tale. That was a mistake from the one who installed the water feature. They should have used a lower flow pump. I do agree with the small fountains. They provide a nice trickling of water. Have a wonderful day

Glad you popped up on my feed today- just what I needed to get outside and do some yard work. In the Midwest, on a farm, and the weeds have taken over! Very buggy here- buffalo gnats- they bite and I get big swollen places. Biting flies, no see-ums,mosquitos…seems there’s something to bite me all season long. The imported Asian ladybugs even bite in the fall- and humans are not a food source for them😡. I’ll consider any bug advice. Lots of wasps here but don’t bother humans if not threatened.

I'm in Australia. If I ever get a spare million that I can afford to waste, I might implement some of these ideas. I'm on 3.5 acres of sheep paddock. It's hard compacted clay, full of holes and lumps. It's a nightmare. We only have tank water so, not enough water to waste on watering grass and gardens, especially when we just don't get enough rainfall in our area.

TY for bringing up the neighbors sightlines. I'm looking for a design that is water wise, but fits in the hot desert of Las Vegas, baby. We have three seasons hot, hotter, and hottest. Yup, a pizza oven, and egg smoker and a bbq. I can run gas line and have an irrigation line that can be run from a central controller. Water wise plants that do well, the good ole Pomegranate. So I am still lost as I am considering too many choices, perhaps.

We get alot of scorpions, vinagarons, centapedes, sunspiders which are new since last year it's a spider mix with a scorpion, so ugly as all the others and we get so many spiders of all kinds and we just live 7miles out of the city, but omg, it's horrible to be outside once it starts getting warm. I always thought ppl with money just spray around thier property for insect control, it's very hard to enjoy the outdoors and we always get them critters in the house as well, I can't figure out where they come in from...
