Add Lufthansa to that. MY husband had the same problem - he was denied boarding because he didnt have a transit visa to pass through Frankfurt even though the transit was meant to be just over an hour. We lost money by getting a partial refund and having to buy ANOTHER ticket by Ethiopian Airlines. Note that he has a Residence Permit for UK but thanks to BREXIT, the UK is not included in the countries that are allowed who have resident permits of EU countries. And I agree with you that the airlines are deliberately NOT being transparent about your need for a transit visa - or even asking you to check whether you need a transit visa. A casual google search would say you do NOT need a transit visa but when you search a look deeper, thats where you find the information. In our case there was NOWHERE on the Lufthansa website where it mentioned Airport Transit Visa.

My passport doesn't need an Airport transit visa but the South African Agent at KLM refuses to sell to me a return ticket because i was a zambian i wanted to go to Quito Ecuador and the only place where they have a cheap ticket flight to that way was South Africa i wanted to buy a return ticket they refuses me to buy a ticket to KLM i called the KLM direct the white lady ask me about my nationality i tell her I'm a zambian she check she said i don't need an airport transit visa for Amsterdam because All the flights that are going to Quito Ecuador have a layover or a connection in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Quito Ecuador provided by KLM flight only, but because i was a zambian and a foreigner the South African ticket seller at the counter refuses to sell to me that day😢 he was black like me and African they all refuse to sell a ticket to me to KLM

Currently going through this at the moment and it’s disheartening. They always conceal this information while booking the flight and after booking you then find out it’s a requirement.

Just saw the video now . I fell foul of this there silly visa . I got my transit visa alright , issued by the Dutch embassy ( Netherland) . You can imagine my chagrin when I was coming back to Uk and the check in staff refused to board me saying that the visa is not Schengen visa and as such I cannot pass through Paris ! Long story short , I was made to buy another ticket for my journey back . Mind you I bought my round trip ticket from KLM directly o. I complained and sent in all necessary info , receipts only for KLM to get back that the case is closed ! I have contacted an Aviation body here in the UK to pursue this . We are still on it , they have backlog of cases .

The Airlines too are culpable because the ticket was bought from them , my journey ( the return leg was routed through France . And it was expressly stated “ your return leg will be handled by one of our partner ( star alliance ) . If I had been told that Air France will not board me , I wouldn’t have bothered . I paid over 809k for my ticket back !

Same thing happened to me. I was traveling from Brazil and I had to route through Paris. I was told that I will be refunded in 18 months 😢 I hope I get refunded Thank you for sharing your experience

Nice video. One challenge however, countries in Southern Africa (Botswana, Namibia, South Africa) mostly are not required to have transit vsas, but yet boarding those planes especially when flying to a visa free country, is a big issue... how do go around this issue? Thanks

Hey Sassy, I share your sentiments. Transparency is sacrosanct in the airline industry. Sometimes I am of the mindset that the withholding of pertinent information such as an airport transit visa is meant to cause travel delay and/or disruption to certain travelers. I wish I'd seen this video 3 weeks ago. My Nigerian cousin asked me to book a flight from London to Curacao for her, so I naively booked one that passes through the USA, not realising that she'd need a transit visa (she wasn't aware of this either). After we'd booked, one of her friends told her that she'd need the visa. So we started the process of applying, only to find out that she wouldn't be able to get an appointment till three months after the flight date, and that the visa would cost $160. She then tried asking the airline if they had any flights that don't pass through the USA, but they didn't. So in the end she ended up not going, and hence threw away the £1000 that she'd spent on the flight. 😭 This whole idea of transit visas is so evil. Why should having a Nigerian passport mean that a person will be charged $160 for the right to stand in an airport departure lounge for 2 hours?!

I have been using the KLM since 1982 and I thought that I'll buy these same for my wife as she always travels with other airlines. It was my biggest mistake of my life. My wife was rejected in December and I was required to pay £900 ( to change the ticket to end of January/mid February) in addition to the initial ticket price paid of £780. In the end, we have to choose shift to 6 months later then asked to pay £148 plus a Schengen Visa cost of between N90K to N120. We have vowed to never use the KLM or Air France again - ever. Our normal BA/Virgin is probably the best option and the worst scenario, one could use any of the other African Airlines like Egypt Air / Air Morroc / Towanda Airline OR via Adis- Ababa. I think that KLM / Air France are going to loose a lot of customers because the extras cost on Schengen could be used towards a direct flight.

The exist of UK from the EU was responsible for this development. Before, a valid UK visa will get to cross thru EEA/Schengen area without the need for transit visa. Unfortunately, it’s no longer so.

With Ur BRP you need transit visa from UK to Lagos, if you are traveling with Eu airlines.

Nope, the UK isn’t part of the Schengen area and no longer part of EEA. Please, get urself a short stay visa from the French embassy if you plan to explore Paris during your stopover.
