My grandfather was a 727 captain. He said that you barely noticed if one of the engines failed, and he on several occasions went around or above Mach 0.9. I really wouldn’t call it underpowered

Not underpowered at all... This bird can cruise at .92 mach comfortably and If it conditions were well enough, It could reach .95. Pretty close to VNE tough.

Love the title in contrast to the purpose of the 727, lol. The entire design of the 727 was for it to be overpowered. It was the literal predecessor to the 757, one of the most iconic overpowered airliners ever made. By today's standards, sure, its not particularly powerful, the JT8D engines it used can't compare to modern engines, but compared to its twin engine counterpart, the early 737's, it boasted significantly better performance.
