I had a panther and he was wonderful. I didn’t think it was that much work (but then I have dogs, cats and a large macaw), I misted his enclosure several times a day. He learned while I was misting to come and drink through the mesh from my sprayer. I used a fogger (which to be fair constantly clogged, but that was OK) and when he was in his youth and middle age I fed him crickets and silkworms with tongs, and then in his old age, I fed him exclusively hornworms from tongs (so a bit pricey in his final year) When his balance started to go, I simply put up Hammocks so he wouldn’t hurt himself if he fell in the day or in the night when I was asleep. He had a lovely, big enclosure. He was extremely social and honestly quite enjoyed coming out for a visit - If I just put my hand gently inside the enclosure, he would wander over and hop onto it. Yes, I did have to take him to the vet a couple times, but so what ?! I have to take everything else I have to a vet. I travelled with him, and he simply had another enclosure at the cottage. I miss him dreadfully. That being said, you are right, the shorter lifespan was heartbreaking even though I bought him as a juvenile adult (around 1 yr old) and I got six years out of him. It wasn’t enough. Now I have an ornate Uromastyx

I consider myself extremely lucky for getting a chameleon as my first reptile and keeping her for 7 years, back then I didn't know vets existed for reptiles so I never took her, It probably helps that I had wanted a chameleon for almost 5 years before I got one watching care guides and reptile videos in general. I will definitely be more prepared for the next chameleon I get.

Don't worry, most of the time the reptile experts quote on quote don't know anything and they just charge you hundreds to be seen. I once brought a turtle there and the woman couldn't even tell me if it was a male or female it was female I was just testing.

We had 3 chameleons. One died of old age and the other 2 lived for 4 to 7 years.. However. the experience was so expensive and time consuming that I got s Redfoot Tortoise! That was 33 years ago and Spud is the best reptile I have ever owned. Gets along with family and family dogs. I agree totally with your video. I love Chameleons but will never own another.

Spud has a room!!!!! He is a great pet and was very close to our Chihuahua. He has outlived 3 dogs and it is sad.

The day my Veiled passed absolutely destroyed me ( he was a rescue and I had to nurse him back to health and he grew to about 20 inches… he was so quirky haha, truly loved my time with Loki ) … But this lizard looks soooo cool! In the 1980s we called the Green Anoles (Anolis carolinensis) American Chameleons. I had several as a kid, I even raised some babies, because the females arrived pregnant and laid eggs. I love Anoles, they are all-around great pets if captive-bred. I would never keep a "old World" Chameleon, everything you said is right. Real Chameleons are just too fragile, live very short lives, and are prone to health issues even under the best of care.

I was there too, it was interesting to see what reptiles have waxed and waned in popularity since I got my beardie almost 13 years ago. Crested geckos seem to be reaching market saturation. I wanted a veiled years back when they seemed more popular, but I don't think I'd have enough time to put towards taking care of one.

when I was a kid, they used to sell Grewn Anoles as American Chameleons because they can turn from brown to green and back again , of course the knowledge of reptiles wasn't like it is now with 3rd graders asking for reptiles by their Scientific Names while the Pets Mart employee stands there with a blank look on his face scratching his chin in udder confusion, saying "wha..."wha..."uhhh...?"

I think the false chameleons are way better for most people. Their head reminds me of a dinosaur, and they can be in a communal setup together. They seem like a solid option for people, especially if they are newer keepers

Yes, tough learning curve but once you get it down it's fairly easy. My biggest problem was egg bound females. I also don't have a lot of confidence in most vets when it comes to chameleons.

My false chameleon lays eggs without a male present, they are avid drinkers and often need to be hand watered to avoid dehydration, along with misting twice daily to keep the humidity high.

I always wanted a chameleon,but where I live we miss electricity really really often.I have some tarantulas and a beardie and I had to buy a big generator because last time we didn’t have electricity for a good 3 days.It is already stressful not having electricity when you have children and animals that need care and you need to reorganize your whole house when that happen.That is the main reason I didn’t get a chameleon

Compared to the Cuban false chameleon, yes chameleons require more work. I wouldn't put them as a "beginner" reptile. That being said, a lot of your points while valid are also a vast simplification which is one reason I'm not to fond of comparing entire reptile species to a singular species as there is a lot of variation within a species. Even if you just stick to a handful there's a huge difference between the Jackson's delicate sensibilities and the much more hardy panther. One point you raised was their shorter lifespan on average. It really depends on how much you invest in your husbandry. For instance if you go online 5-7 years is about average for a panther according to the internet yet I still have my first panther from 10 years ago who is still doing well. A Meller's on average is supposed to live around 12 years yet mine from 14 years ago and he was my first reptile ever (yeah, not my best move). One huge factor is how they are from hatching to being sold. Whether the breeder separates them early, or cohabs them until a certain point, whether they get handled at all or all the time, whether the breeder is trying to make a business out of it and is less emotionally involved or if it's their passion. That early start will set the tone for the rest of their life. There's also a huge difference in what's available for enclosures now vs even a decade ago. Another point you raised was how involved it is. Which, thanks to timers and automatic systems isn't as much as it used to be. With a little creativity you can get that dripping system without having to constantly refill water, yay for filtration systems and false bottoms. Or you can go the good old 4L milkjug with a valve from the dollar store route. Misting/fogging systems again are pretty easy to get a hold of and set up these days. I still hand mist a lot of my enclosures. Sure it's slightly more work then changing a dish ever other day or as needed but popping a refilled jug back onto of a enclosure isn't exactly hard either. You mentioned the steep learning curve. Which thanks in large part to people like Neptune the Chameleon, and Bill Strand, among others honestly isn't that bad. I would argue that one should do extensive research before ever looking at breeders and since there are now many many guides on YT or other places that break things down into every possible component and the pitfalls/traps not to get stuck in if researched enough it's certainly *different* but not so hard that if you make a few mistakes you've screwed your reptile and either killed it or irreparably harmed it. As far as eggs go, just get a male until you're used to dealing with the chameleon itself and then when you've got that down to a science maybe then add the harder to care for females. Can't get egg bound if you aren't producing eggs after all. And most species of chameleon it's the boys who have the dramatic colors anyway. As far as not being able to hunt very well. Okay, that one I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. While they aren't particularly fast it's amazing how they can contort themselves to line up that perfect shot. Whether that's standing on their back legs using that prehensile tail to do their best t-Rex impression (I so wish I could add photos to comments right now) so they can get at a bug above their head without actually having to climb for it, or twisting themselves around and upside down like a ballerina on LSD because they can't be bothered to just turn around and face the other direction like a normal reptile they can certainly catch prey. I've never cup fed any of my chams and tong feeding for chams is actually not recommended because it can damage their tongue. As far as humidity goes, one fogging machines and automatic misters, two live plants make *all* the difference. I actually have to leave my cage doors open every so often when I go out with the a magic lizard because the humidity gets to high otherwise without even trying. Mind, I also use a hybrid enclosure of mostly glass with a mesh top and front. Because Canada in winter sucks and my house is a drafty POS that can't seem to contain heat. As far as vet goes. Because chameleons are masters at hiding illness the easiest way to avoid high vet bills is a)find a teaching vet clinic. Many of them will give discounts for basic physical exams that are there just to access the current health if you don't mind a couple students looking on or a longer time spent at the vet so they can explain things to said students. I do an exam at time of purchase, 6 months in because I get babies, and then every year after. But the flip side of that is I've only had one chameleon that needed medication. Many of the problems that have come up are so minor because of checkups and thuz being caught early that it's either been slight husbandry adjustments to get them back on track, adjusting how much of which supplements I give until the problem corrects, or adjusting the diet to lean more to one kind of bug or another. A lot of vets too will give you a troubleshoot solution (ie give some extra hornworms for hydration before bringing them in for dehydration. Sometimes chameleons are just remarkably stupid and refuse to drink enough kinda like that kid who guzzles pop and wonders why he's on a caffeine crash) before telling you to spend $100 bringing him in. And b) keep a log book of your daily temps, humidity, and supplement schedule. If they're under a year add what they eat and how much. Your vet will love you for making their life so much easier. And I've had vets who've given me a cheaper bill because they didn't have to play guessing games or wonder if this really is abnormal or just a paranoid owner. Yearly exams also mean a vet knows what is considered 'normal' behavior and the chameleon isn't in immediate stress mode just because you're at the vet. But all that being said, I wouldn't recommend a chameleon for those who aren't willing to invest the time and effort. Or who can't be bothered with more then a halfassed setup. I drop about $1000 on each setup alone, mind most of those are one time costs too so... and then there's the expense of the chameleon itself. It's not the kind of reptile where you can really just add as you go. Also the more cover you give a chameleon the more you'll see it out. Also I just find chameleons who have been properly socialized from the very start to be so much more interactive and engaging. They can even be taught tricks if you find that one food they will do anything for (moths, it's always moths). My third youngest can do Jesus lizard, fistbump, high-five, shake a paw, and unlatch his own enclosure because he's also an asshole who lives to give me heart attacks. Hence why I have an actual key lock on his door now. But to answer the question...I'll take one of each 🦎❤🥰

I have two Cuban False Chameleons and they are pretty awesome and easy to care for. I did have to take one to the vet for a tail injury but that was either from his tank mate or hurt himself on something in the enclosure. Hard to tell.

Soooo... Back in the 90s, my mom kept a pair of CBB veiled chameleons. The female lived 5 years and never went to the vet, the male almost hit 10 without ever going to the vet. Even with her terrible husbandry (we kept the male in a wire rabbit hutch). My mom used up all the chameleon keeping luck in the world. No one else will ever have this experience with their chameleons.

Jackson's chameleons, at least in the area I'm from, are usually wild caught or farm bred. They're invasive to Florida and Hawaii, and that's where most of them are coming from.

So I have a much smaller collection but my beardie goes to the vet annually for a wellness check, just like my cats. She gets her parasite load checked, teeth examined, weight charted and observed if she's developed any MBD(which so far she has never had.) My snakes and cresties never go to the vet but I worry that they should. Would you be willing to make a video of reasonable expectations of taking reptiles to the vet?

Not relevant to this vid, but I have a juvenile ball python and she loves to escape. I have her in a 40 gallon that I found cheap, and bought a lid from a pet store that fits. We have put weights on the lid, towels to close off any gaps but she still finds a way out… Any pointers.

Want to keep chameleons for a big reason. The beauty of the color change, one that although falses can change color, not as pretty imo as a carpet etc. But I also want it as a display only animal, that will not be handled. I've come from having easy reptiles in the past (Nicaraguan dwarf boas, caulker cay boas, also have a full sized red eared slider in a 100 gallon tank rn), and now I'm more into saltwater aquariums (Coral reef and seahorse tanks) so I think I might be ok learning how to care for chameleons. But yeah, the cost of entry is definitely not cheap.

They're surprisingly easy to breed when given an awesome bioactive enclosure, easier to cohab together (obviously, never 2 males), easy to care for, and so much more. A much better alternative to true chameleons, in my opinion!

@Connor J Casto With proper care, they can live upwards to 15 years under captive conditions, and it's certainly possible given what more experienced keepers and breeders have told me. Averages are just averages, especially when you put in many factors (i.e. humidity, diet, lighting and heating, individual animal, species/subspecies, etc).

Most Jackson’s still aren’t captive bred. Most come from Hawaii. Jackson’s are one of the hardest to find truly captive bred.

Oh my god, I know there are tons of species of chameleons. I don't know how many are really kept his pets, but I'll tell you whenever I would go to Petco or PetSmart to get something for the kitty. I like to look at the chameleons and it's almost always available chameleon. It's occasionally a Jackson's but I don't think I've ever seen anything else at one of those. I think I saw something mislabeled as a panther chameleon once, but it definitely wasn't a panther chameleon

I've had a Jackson's and now a veiled. They are a lot more work than any of my other pets. I don't know how old my veiled is due to buying her at an expo but hoping she has a long life. But I am thinking she may be my last one -are there any other reptiles that can be kept in the screen cage she's in? Mine's fully bioactive and has so many beautiful plants that I hate to think of just dismantling it after her.

I wish I had known about these before I got my veiled chameleon don't get me wrong my chameleon is pretty cool but they do need a lot of work with humidity etc and it was probably a month after getting mine I was watching a reptile video and found out about the false chameleon and the false chameleon is pretty cool and more handable where my chameleon won't let me hold it at all he'll eat out of my hand and that's it but I'm planning on getting one I just hope I can find one and I just wanted to say so far I've not had any problems with my chameleon but that's thanks to all the KZbin videos about care and I've been able to provide it with the best care that I've been able to learn

Chameleons will drink from a bowl if you train it with a dripper over the bowl and make sure the bowl is clear.

Playing devils advocate a bit, but I wouldn’t want anything that resembled a chameleon instead of a chameleon…. I loved owning a panther chameleon and would again. But if the commitment was too much I would get a completely different reptile - a false chameleon would just remind me that I don’t have a panther chameleon (possibly my favourite reptile)

We have a veiled chameleon. I do like that he is good at communicating and he definitely has a lot of opinions. However, he's a pain in the butt. Getting him set up correctly cost us about $700 and is the reptile that takes the most energy and effort to take care of.

well no, there is no need to take a reptile into a vet unless they are showing signs they need medical attention. Unlike dogs and cats these animals don't need annual shots, boosters, heartworm, flea and tick treatment, etc.

Very interesting video, thanks. I heard on another channel (one that does reptile rescue) that chameleons don’t like to be picked up or touched. Someone surrendered a chameleon (veiled, I think) that was in such bad shape that it looked like a piece of burned paper. It was hard to watch, BUT they nursed it back to health, so happy ending! Anyway, they stated that besides requiring high levels of care that chameleons don’t like contact with their keepers.

I love my chameleon, but even I concede that he's not the easiest to take care of. He can't hunt "eye issue" he keeps killing his plants "laying in it" he has been to they vet multiple times, but I love them to much to ever give them up.
