I would not use Bunq since you only get a Dutch IBAN. Normally not big of an issue if you use it just for paying. Yet, many German companies do not like / allow direct debits on a non German IBANs. Normally, not allowed under EU law but still happens frequently since it does not work with the IT systems #noIBANdiscrimination

That the banks require SWIFT/BIC in addition to IBAN for SEPA transfers causes so much unneeded hassles ...

Something important to know about N26 is that if you’re not meeting the minimum standards for opening a bank account due to bad credit score, N26 does offer you a debit card but it costs about €8/month though.

Transferwise supports any number of sub-accounts, unlike N26. In N26, it is just 2 sub-accounts for the free version.

Even though I found it easy to open a bank account in Germany, it cannot compete with Canada. I opened an account with RBC and the customer service is outstanding. They speak zillions languages. As a French, it was not real plus for me in Quebec, but for non francophones or anglophones, it is a gem. Here in Germany it is a little more challenging,e specially the online service which is only in german. Same as for the tax return stuff. Probably the only country in Europe that ignores that the two official languages in Europe are English and French.

Sorry, but your aren't quit correct with EC-Karte, girocard and maestro. EC-Karte is the old name of a product now called girocard. This one is the big thing in Germany. If anybody accepts card, they accept girocard. Maestro is a debit card of mastercard. And this one isn't always accepted where girocard is. Be sure your card has the girocard symbol. That's the one that counts.
@lifeingermany_4 жыл бұрын
Julia Claire you’re right! What I was trying to get at with my point was that none of these 3 terms refers to a creditcard in any way. Just trying to make that clear separation! 🙂
@juliaclaire424 жыл бұрын
@@lifeingermany_ it's important to understand the difference between a girocard and a maestro card. My butcher only accepts girocard. And cash. In Germany there aren't many real credit cards. Most cards come with a monthly bill that has to be payed - you don't get a credit for more than six weeks. And more and more VISA and mastercards are converted into debit cards. If you need a credit you usually have a 'dispo' and don't use a creditcard. Pay attention, the interest rate may be high.
@lifeingermany_4 жыл бұрын
Julia Claire ahhh I know! And that can be so annoying sometimes - it took me a while to understand the difference. Our trams payment machines only took Girocard as well, but my bank debit card wasnt accepted. That’s a video in itself 😂🙈. Most of the expat-friendly banks automatically give you one debit card and one credit card nowadays. Either MasterCard or Visa depending on the company. I have an Amazon credit card simply for the points and I end up making a lot more money in points than the interest fees or the cost of the card which is great! 🙂

If you are from Brazil: In order for you to open your N26 account, you need your physical VISA document. Here there are two types: the physical document, which you must get if you live here for more than a year; and the one that is like a passport stamp, you would normally get this if you did your visa in Brazil, or, as is my case, if you got the residence permit for only 6 months. (I went to extend my visa and this time I only got the stamp, and I will be here for another 2 years haha, it depends a lot on the state of mind of who will attend you). In the second case, you CANNOT open an account with N26.

Hello! thank you so much for the educative video, it means a lot to me since i am preparing to move to Germany next year but my question is that do this banks offer cheque books for current account as well. I'm abit confused since they are online and meaning they hardly have branches so this means there cant be cheque books right? In UAE where I am living at the moment we use cheques for virtually everything from rent to school fees etc.
@lifeingermany_4 жыл бұрын
adebola otunaike I don’t believe you would get a cheque book at any online bank here in Europe. However, you will also likely never have to use a cheque books here. Monthly fees like school, rent, phone bills, etc. would often be taken directly from your bank account (you can set up automatic payments). Daily expenses like groceries, clothing items, etc. can be paid in cash, debit, or credit! Even deposits and down payments are paid now via direct bank deposit. 🙂 Hope this helps!!!
@RGambo3 жыл бұрын
Yuck! In Europe, cheques have ceased to exist almost two decades ago, when the Euro was introduced as coins and bank notes. We have SEPA (Single European Payments Area - not only EU or countries withe the Euro, but all of Europe up to Iceland) and transfer money from your bank account to any other bank account in Europe. You only need the IBAN (International Bank Account Number) and for cross country transfers additional the SWIFT/BIC (which is insane, given that the IBAN includes country as well as bank and account numbers). You can either do this via online banking or a self service terminal. The local or regional organized groups of Volksbank and Sparkasse have ATMs and terminals in almost every small village throughout Germany. Some of the functions work only in the area of your Volksbank or Sparkasse, but you can withdraw cash (and in Germany, you'll definitely need that) at every ATM of that group in the whole country and it either costs nothing extra or only about two Euros). Postbank might do, too. Other banks also build groups, but you have to remember all banks of that group to know where your are NOT charged an arm and a leg (okay, probably around five Euro) for beeing at the terminal from the wrong group. And these other bank groups have even combined far less service points than Sparkasse or Volksbank alone. And for finding a branch of your bank, that is even worse.
