Do Not Put The Right Hip Behind You

When you throw the right hip behind you on the backswing, it has to come back forward under the body in the forward swing and that will cause your back to lose tilt. That loss of tilt kills your posture and makes it much harder to hit the ball. So we show you how the right hip should move in the backswing so you can avoid this death move.

Crazy! Never been told that or shown that from a pro. Makes. Ton of sense.

Thanks for watching - once you get your spine posture to be more constant which is clearly related to how you move the hip sockets through the swing you will find the upper arm rotation motion can be very simple and VERY fast.

man, you are telling some facts there. Especially if you look at modern-day strikers, such as Aberg, their movement in their Hips is, I wouldn't say limited, but put in a range, where not many variables occur. I have been doing this incorrect for a long time and now beginning to learn how important this move is for consistent striking. Cheers

Thanks for the comment - what I see in swings like these show how much they leverage very fast rotation of the upper arms around a very stable spine posture. I think of it as the hip positions clearly define how the pelvis is moving and the job of the pelvis is to provide a stable platform for the angle for the spine. Once you maintain the stable spine tilts through the swing then your obliques have the torso moving in a simple rotation and that means the shoulders have a stable rotation. Once you have that you can really let the upper arms rotate very freely and that is VERY fast as you look at just how quickly the elbows go from one side or the torso to the other. This isn't about how fast you can spin the hips open, it is about how stable you can make the spine as the trunk does its rotation with obliques so there is a very simple and fast motion the upper arms can do.

Please define your vernacular of “forward” right hip movement. Forward = towards the ball? Or Forward = towards the target line? I’m curious about the hip movement pattern with a taller and more upright swing plane golfer. Finau is my height 6’4” but I bet his lie angle is standard or even 1 degree flat

Sure - what we are trying to show is from a down the line view how little you see the right hip socket move away from or back from the target line and then how little it moves towards or into or forward to the target line. From a face on view you will see the right hip socket move towards the target with the whole pelvis - quite a bit during the transition in particular. But from the down the line view there isn't much of the back and forth back away from the target line and forward into the target line. This is a great way to help make sure you can maintain posture and not have to bend your spine during the downswing. Hope that helps clarify

I think it needs to be right hip back but dont straighten leg n then pressure into ground n left hip back

You see some people that drive the right hip back. It's just our experience with all the lessons we do that driving the right hip back away from the target line almost always leads to the right hip coming back under the body towards the target line in the forward swing. That will change the spine tilt to be more vertical before impact leading to the loss of posture. Some people will then try to get the hands low and bend the spine to the right as the right hip comes under the body. What we really want people to avoid is bending the spine during the downswing. If the right hip comes under the trunk back to the target line and you bend the spine to the right to get the hands low that puts a lot of stress on the discs between the vertebrae - not good for back health.

Max turned his hip just like you. Almost identical to what you said not to do.

Not sure what point you're referring to in the video. What we tried to show for both swing is the dot that shows the location of the right hip socket at setup and through the swing and the circle around the dot that shows from a down the line perspective how little the right hip socket moves away from and back into the target line during the swing before impact. There is a difference between where the right butt cheek is as opposed to the hip socket. To be clear - we are trying to isolate how little the hip socket has the back and forward motion in these swings that we showed and subsequently how well the spine posture is maintained.

In other words, turn your hips a little on the backswing. And turn your hips a lot on the downswing. Genius.@@AltaViewGolf

If u watch video from the backside of most pro golfers you see what appears to be plenty of right hip movement back and towards the target line?

There is a difference between what you see with the right butt cheek motion as opposed to the motion of the hip socket itself. From a rear view you do see the butt cheek move - there is a rotation of the backside of the pelvis as the pelvis closes 30-45 degrees to the target. But that doesn't mean the right hip socket has to dive back deep. Think of the hip socket more of a relatively fixed distance from the target line. The butt cheek will rotate around that, and you clearly can see that from a backside view and the left hip socket moves more towards the target line which gives you the pelvis as a whole rotating to the right so you see the butt cheeks rotate. But what we were trying to show here is how the motion of the right hip socket itself isn't one where it dives deep on the backswing. On the swings we showed from Xander and Max the right hip socket move much at all back away from the target line as shows in the illustration. Then because of that motion on the backswing there is much more limited motion of the right hip socket out to the target line on the forward swing prior to impact - thus they can maintain their spine tilt and not bend the spine. So I agree - you see a lot of motion when you look at the backside - but it isn't the hip socket driving back away in these swings we used for the illustration.
