Very useful discussion. Thanks to you both. I convinced my wife of the general strategy to be as physical asset poor as possible as an inheritance strategy, and to put any asset of non-trivial value into beneficiary or TOD/TODD designations. This was all done to minimize probate pain and the possibility of arguments between our children. I've had a very competent and client first lawyer tell me that a will is the better way to go because it reduces the chance of conflicting, lost, or out of date beneficiary documents. I can see the trade-off, but I am so anti-probate and anti-lawyer I have not pivoted. It also helps that neither I or my wife have complex social relationships. Comments most welcome !

Regarding auto insurance of the deceased, you need to notify the insurance company as soon as possible. I don’t know the exact number of days required.
