I see my music like any product. It's not really for me it's for those that want to use it and buy it.

We are in good company. Mozart spent his entire life composing on commission, meaning that he had to tailor his writing to the tastes of the aristocrats. Near the end of his life he was promised the position of music director at the Vienna cathedral, which would have freed him up financially to write whatever he wanted. But then he fell ill. He wrote a letter to his wife lamenting that now that he could write original music (or some other similarly shocking choice of words) he had to die. These dilemmas are as old as the dirt. We are in good company.

Thank goodness! Love this video. One of the things about me is I love being told exactly what to do when I am producing a track. I love it. Even if I don't get the job, I still am guided by what the client wants from me. I am the kind of person who needs that if I want to do well. Even as an artist, producing my own music, I still like to be told sometimes what I need to be doing. Bring on the next video! Kick me in the teeth harder! I'm not knocked over yet.

Another positive point, even though this is do not sync: even if you don't get a particular job or a gig, there's still plenty others out there that you might be able to get in this business. It's all about if a particular track fits the brief.

In the 3 Personality Traits To Be Successful video, for me, I feel you established the idea of create and let go. I understand your points in this video. But as you've explained to be successful, we're in service to the client, and my feeling is our tracks are products, not children. Am I wrong? Humility and Non-Attachment.

Are Libraries the same thing as Sync Agencies?

Nope, they are different and they operate on different terms. I personally work with Libraries only.

I have a question. If you're signed with the library and your tracks are there in perpetuity, what happens to your tracks if the library goes out of business? Do the tracks still remain with the library, or can you take them out and shop them around again? I understand if the former, because that's what I signed up for.

Most times a larger library will buy them out so your tracks would then move into the new company’s catalogue. I’ve never heard of a Library straight up closing without selling its catalogue to someone else.

While this is not true of every composer/songwriter, I've learned that a person who thinks their music is so precious and they overly worry about someone stealing it. . . they seldom have anything worth stealing. We're writing production music to serve a need. Enough said.

Damn, I have to admit I think you're onto something there. Certainly rings true in my experience.

Back in 1975 when I was eighteen, a friend of mine had a small recording studio. I started hanging around because I wanted to learn recording, and we became friends. His name is Larry Johnson and soon he went on to becoming Johnny Cash’s sound man for 15 years. Anyway, back in 1975 this hard rock band booked an afternoon session. And the singer/guitarist/songwriter was overly concerned about who was also in the control room with Larry. He wanted to know if we were musicians who might steal his songs. Before all this someone had told us they were pretty good, so we were expecting to hear some good local rock. Me and Larry’s two other friends had to sit on the floor of the control room where the singer/songwriter couldn’t see us laughing uncontrollably. He’d have to pay someone to take his songs. They were that bad. (Boring power metal chord changes, lame cosmic lyric, vocals from karaoke night, etc.” At eighteen, I learned a lot from Larry who was nine years older than me. And this is the humorous but true lesson I took away from working with him. marshallpayne.com/ @@SyncMyMusic
