Thank you Jesse. Understanding you must be service minded can be a hurdle if you are an artist and needing to express for your own creativity. Fortunately for me on this DO NOT SYNC episode, I use this aspect when it comes to being a "copycat" as a prime way to discover new artists. Not just for briefs, but inspiration and in keeping the finger on the pulse.Traversing to #7!

I’m looking forward to 7. I work better alone. And I hate most people. Working in solitude is fine with me.

I know a bunch of music producers that do well in there genre but feel like they have made the same track over 100 times because thats what their audience wants. Drives them insane. And on the point you make about who this business is about....every entrepreneur is in the business of making their clients money not making money for themselves. We make money only if we make our clients money.

Thanks for this Jesse. I recently hit a burnout after attempting to make trailer music for a solid year, putting in tons and tons of hours. I do think with trailer music, there’s a lot more room for pushing the boundaries and being creative, in fact with trailer it is encouraged most of the time as opposed to just background tv cues. However I recently found that the best workflow for me is to focus on my artist music and write sync music alongside that. My thought process has shifted to allowing my artist music to really be where I get to write whatever I want and be as weird and expressive as I want, building a beautiful cathedral of personal expression, and sync music is more of just writing what I think will serve the industry… not trying to do anything too fancy, just build a table with four legs. I feel much more healthy and fulfilled this way. Eventually perhaps I’ll figure out how to really be expressive and just unique enough within media music to give me an edge, without being too out there and challenging musically, but I think I need to learn how to write the clichés first… like you said it’s not about any one of us it’s about serving what it is we need to serve.

Glad you found a workflow that works for you!

This is true. You rarely hear creative lofi in fsst food commercials. It's usually commercial pop, rap snd dance music.

Still with you buddy. Making copycat of reference tracks is so much easier for me than trying to be creative all the time. As a sidenote, another thing that will kill your creative spirit is majoring in music in a music college. While that might help, the academics and stuff of music theory and all that has left a sour taste in many peoples mouths even more than sync.

What you say, just makes me realize, that I don’t want to persue any income from music. Just wanna make precisely the music I like and give a phuck about all the other stuff.

Interesting. I guess I was under the impression that custom music (write to brief for an ad or show) was separated by music production companies from writing music for sync libraries. From what you are saying, and also in the previous video, it seems there is little to no difference between music production companies and music production libraries. Come to think of it, this makes sense since custom music that is not used gets added to the catalog of music production companies, essentially creating a library. Keep the punishment coming 💪

I like making what my libraries ask me make. It takes the thought out of it. Im good at imitating music.

What about those who just want to make sync focused music that they enjoy and submit it to libraries hoping it’ll get a placement as opposed to trying to meet the requirements of a brief? Is it still possible for those people to make a living off sync or does it not work like that? Loving this series keep up the great work!

It's certainly possible to still get placements that way, but when you submit to briefs you dramatically increase your earning potential since those often come with Sync fees.
