"Does my wife find me extremely annoying?!.... Definitely!!" 🤣😅😆 My advice is wear less expensive or daily beaters for vacation. Even a less expensive dress watch... or if you must wear something really nice just bring one watch that is versatile and bring several strap change options. Bring a watch that if something were to happen you would be okay to take a loss.

Simple rule - never use a hotel safe, unless they have at least a full inch of steel all-around and NO bypass. As a deterrent, set up a bunch of well-hidden cameras (there are some that look like alarm clocks) to catch inside jobs. Hotel safes made from cheap steel are simply cut open nowadays, or just wrought open with a crowbar. Also, one point missing in this vid is that customs authorities, if you travel abroad with multiple watches, might ask you to at least register them so they can check at exit that you take them back, or they charge you at least sales tax/VAT on import, to be refunded when you leave the country.

Good topic here. Totally agree with the secondary lock...just begging to be broken into. If I'm traveling for business, I tend to keep my watches with me at all times, which is easier to do if I'm in regular meetings where I need to have my PC. If I'm traveling on vacation, I'll limit the number of watches I bring unless it's an air B&B where I won't have room service. If some stranger can enter the room in a regular hotel, I'm not counting on the safe to protect my stuff. Had a bad experience years ago where there was an inside job and they stole my credit card only to replace it in a different location. My wife thought I was nuts for throwing a big scene, until the new computer we didn't buy showed up on the credit card statement.

Ok listen up people, this is a PSA for frequent travelers that's a bit wary bringing valuables. From my experince of countless times I habe to travel to other countries for work or even when my wife and I travels and we brought several of our watches, important documents and her jewelries I always store them in a SDB of our banks. Especially if you travel to relatively bigger cities and you are a client of internatinal banks e.g Citi or HSBC. Even if youre not a frequent customer of the dedicated banks they will gladly facilitate. If youre a bit skeptical of the procedures, you can always call ahead to the branches. Dont hesitate to contact your local branch either, they will always be helpfull! This is an important measures to take specifically if you travel to countries that for lack of a better word- less stable from a geopolitical standpoint. Ive done this countless times when I traveled to Hong Kong, South Africa, south Americas, east Europe, Russia and even the south east asian countries. I dont mean to offend anyone from those countries, but better safe than sorry.

My main worry about using hotel safes when on international travel is the loss of my passport and other important documents which I tend to keep in the safe. Loosing one's passport is much more troublesome in many cases than loosing an expensive watch or watches. You have to make a police report, than go to your embassy for emergency travel documentation, plus you would be grilled like a criminal as to how you lost or had it stolen at the embassy. Problem is, if you carry your passport around with you, chances of having it stolen are probably greater than if it was kept in a hotel safe.

Staying at hotel always puts your items at the mercy of hotel staff once you're not in that room. And I did realize those hotel safes all have a backup fail safe which as you acknowledge only makes sense. The hope is you have a honest people working at the hotel. There is only so much you can do in the end. My general rule is simply not to make it easy for them or as you inferred with having an additional lock, not to make things seem enticing. I have traveled with people who have a lot more trust on hotel staff than I do and will leave items like sunglasses, watches on nightstands, tables etc when they leave their hotel room. To each, their own I suppose. Using the safe works, or hide your items where they aren't easily visible and hope for the best is what I do.

A couple thoughts. I always hang the do-not-disturb sign on the hotel room door. There is very little chance that anyone will enter and be tempted. Secondly, be very concerned about attracting violent thieves with your watch in a foreign country. They may decide to demand it just for the chance that it might turn out to be valuable.

Until recently I didn't have any watches that I would be sorta crushed if they were stolen. I've always had a number of nice watches, but typically I just travel with one. My last trip I took a watch roll, but I was driving, so I could hide it in the car. If I was traveling by air, my biggest concern would be losing the watch(es) in the security check somehow. Lastly, I'd likely travel with the best watch (not a Rolex) on my wrist, a nice ( but inexpensive) casual watch and a beater in a watch case. Recently, I've heard of a scam where girls ( sometimes prostitutes) will lure a guy, back to his hotel, slip a pill in his drink, take his watch and wallet, then leave. I think the additional lock on the safe is probably effective for a night or two, because anyone who was slipping into the room to hit the safe is likely not carrying the tools they would need to defeat the supplementary lock; it might be too loud and take too much time!?
@gordonanderson62163 жыл бұрын
Another snag with the padlock thing that I can envisage is the possibility that the room maid or some similar person, who probably has no intention of stealing from you, may see it, and surmise that you don't trust them. If they do, expect your toothbrush to be used to clean the toilet rim.

I personally don't see point to bring multiple watches. If I'm going somewhere, valuable or inexpensive, just bring my best watch that is capable for foreseeable use and the one to make memories with on that vacation or general travelling. Not worth the trouble and worries for all the factors you mentioned and probably a few others I can conjure up in my head. Additionally, depending on where you are going and/or coming from.. might you get stopped or harassed by customs if u have too many valuable watches on you and they want proof you did not buy them new abroad otherwise they want to charge u duty? Idk, I can see that being a potential issue. Lastly, if I travel, I probably don't care about having a GMT*. I don't have to travel for work and has and will always be for recreation. As such, I never need to know my home time or other time zones. I'm at where I'm at and don't care what goes on, timewise, anywhere else in the world. I'll be on vacation, right? Time for yourself and leave whatever you left behind .. well, just leave it behind. * I will say having a "traveler's watch" would be more useful.. one that has that ability to jump hour forwards or backwards, the ones in many modern Omegas for example, would be good to quickly set at new local time zone without having to hack the movement.

Definitely something to consider. My last vacation, I took 6. I kept them in watch rolls which were with me in a back-pack in transit. Some hotels have safety deposit boxes which can only be accessed with two keys you have one they have one. Usually it’s at the front desk or close by. Otherwise just insure your watches as part of your home contents and pay a bit more to insure them when away from home . It’s going to cost a bit more but give you peace of mind and protection in case you get robbed in the street . I would not bother insuring stuff like Zodiac just the really valuable pieces like Rolex , AP, Vacheron , Patek . The other stuff is only a few grand sending hand so I would not bother .
