Isn't a "hacking" distro ironic? I'm pretty sure I can install the tools I need myself without the drastically increased possibility of a built-in backdoor... (Hell, they pointed it out in their installer.) Say I want to test new tools, can't I install the packages from source or with a package helper? Who honestly needs a whole distro? I read Kali, for example, is less hardened so security features don't interfere with tests. But I can disable those with a few switches; it's all documented on the Linux man page. Are we assuming I need a _less_ secure system so I can get super-duper hacked? Is there actually a solid use case for "specialized" distros? No terminal??? Is this an excuse to make "not doing your job" such a terrible experience that you do your job?

I 100% agree with everything you stated. I just run a script that grabs the tools I regularly use from Git. I have been wondering what the point of these distros are, too. I was looking forward to seeing if they pre-setup things like Metasploit. Do they already have api keys configured for tools?...things like that.

Maybe this distro just caters to a different psychology lol... If you can't make me work then you don't deserve to use me. Arch Linux or not, I think it's better to convert an existing Arch Linux install into BlackArch instead of using the distro itself.
@sfselekta20 күн бұрын
LOL it just may cater to a different psychology, and I am not worthy. From what I have experienced, you appear to be correct in converting Arch to BlackArch. I did read up on the strap script, but at that point, I began to think the video should be, 'How to turn arch into blackarch,' and that may not be a bad idea. I have scripts to grab the packages I use off of git, so it may be a cool comparison between the two.

I am a blackarch enjoyer but I either use the OVA or Docker image. With docker I use the novnc image for a graphical environment. BTW I am pretty sure the VMware / virtbox modules are to be used as a guest OS which enables integration with the respective VM client.
@sfselekta20 күн бұрын
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, dude......OVA. Yeah, I should have done that. Well, looks like I have something to do in the next few weekends. I did not even think about that, and that was the issue lol. I was thinking that the VMware modules were for ease of setting up a lab to pentest on. You may be correct, and now have we wanting to try it again.

It works. I have just done a clean full blackarch install from usb using full iso offline option and a network connection. (The same way you csn just install Windows. )no virtual box or preinstalled arch.
@sfselekta20 күн бұрын
I know that the slim ISO does work, but I am not a fan of the preinstalled tools or xfce. I did not think to try the full iso offline, may have to try that. I wanted this distro to work so I can use it as a jumping off point to begin discussing the tools and OSINT. I was just perplexed as to how a terminal emulator was not available after the install said it was successful. Thanks for the heads up! There may be a BlackArch review redux in the near-ish future.

@@sfselekta With peace and love, you ought to put in some effort to learn how to use Linux before you go trying to use it as a vehicle for teaching others. This is a half hour showcase of your inexperience of even the most basic of its core concepts. Maybe check out overthewire. And finally, those who live in skiddy houses shouldn't throw stones. Don't be condescending when you yourself clearly don't know your ass from a hole in the ground.

Would you know where I went wrong? I have been wondering if it was during the 'blackarch groups,' or maybe I did not give it enough storage space to install everything? I was just frustrated that it said the installation was successful but then did not have a terminal.

why didn't you just install a terminal emulator? I imagine installing black arch isn't different from arch linux which also doesn't install a terminal emulator unless you tell it to. it's just how arch linux works.
@sfselekta15 күн бұрын
There did not seem to be an option/chance to install any additional packages during set up. With this being a distro like Endeavour or Manjaro, I would think they have the desktop environments set up seeing as they let you pick what DE you want. But that could also be my bad for assuming that. Also, something could have just borked during the process even though the install said it was successful. I guess my point/question is: why have this installer and not just add the repo mirrors to a normal arch installation?
@nilkonom14 күн бұрын
@@sfselekta they only let you pick a window manager, not a desktop environment so there's no terminal included. i see why that would be confusing, however the website says the netinstall is a minimal installation. if you want all that preinstalled, you should have used the slim iso. But you're right, the netinstall is kind of pointless since that is just arch with an extra repo.

If you have a few hours to spare, then manually installing arch once or twice is very helpful when one is learning about the fundamentals of linux. That being said, you are always free to use some distro based on arch with a proper GUI installer for that streamlined experience. No time is being wasted this way, just click throught and done :)

If you don't _want_ to know how to use Linux, you might not succeed with Arch. But it's not difficult. I honestly had more difficulty with Mint.
