thanks for this video Jean... I have been following your and other Bali residents lives for a couple of months now and completely agree with your outlook... even though I am an organised and quite laid back person, I have far too much pressure in my life.. brought on by, unfortunately, a spouse who considers material possessions to be the measure of happiness and completely missing the good life we have with two beautiful young children... I have been based in HK a long while... things not the same in HK anymore as well... so... listening to you comments and watching your lifestyle has me investigating how I can simplify life, so long as I can still provide quality (education etc) to the kids moving forward... thanks... look forward to the next video!

Hi Mark, thanks for the kind note. I’ve been stationed in Hk for work before and personally found it a very mentally trying place! Like you said, the mentality of many there didn’t really resonate hehe. Recognising the root of the issue that’s making you unhappy is already a good step forwards, I’m sure you’ll find your way through this feeling and make a better plan forward 🌻

Great video. Happiness is not just about chasing materialism, but about leaving the place better than the one we inherited. Those who do self reflection will find more meaning in their lives, and making time for the right priorities will help one achieve happiness.

Jean, Thank you for your video and for your thoughts. "Dolce far niente" is an italian phrase, "the sweetness of doing nothing". In modern society status of being busy = successful... it is amazing how conditioned our minds are. And we start feel guilty when we not busy.. It is amazing how much inertia our mind has, it could take so much time to realize that nothing wrong with doing nothing...

Achievements Society hold up as goals you should strive for, help society, your welfare is seldom a consideration. Finishing a well run race. Who says you will? In my life time I and my wife were always top performers, yet she got cut twice once after 20 years, simply to improve the bottom line by outsourcing her department. But the final race she ran lasted 17 years… sadly she was only 3 years short of the finish line. So close we were planning our next chapter… if only it was that clean and neat… she died of a heart attack at 62. She never realized those dreams despite following the rules, succeeding at the goals given her along the way. As for me… flying off to some inexpensive tropical island camera in hand, sounds really good right about now…

I completely agree we need to spend time noticing the little things in life, the butterflies flitting around, the sunrises or sunsets, etc. The color change of the leaves. In the US we are too busy and are doing our best to keep up with the Jones's whoever those people are. We all need to take a step back and enjoy the small moments more because that is what makes life worth living not rushing and being constantly busy. We only have 24 hours in a day same as everyone else no matter how much you try to squeak in.
