Does decreased drag in the new Hope Pro 5 have real world riding implications? That's the question we set out to answer with a bit of help from The Sprag, our new test pilot.
We also take a look at what Hope has done to update the Pro 5 hub over the Pro 4, which has been one of our best selling hubs for the past six years.

There's a shop in England that knows a great mod for the Hope hub engagement to give it even more than originally comes with! His videos on KZbin showing some of how he does it for us! Loads go to him to get it done to make the hubs even better! The engagement springs are stiffened up and 2 of the tabs are cut down so it's 2 and 2 first 2 fins grips then the next 2 grip so all 4 don't grip at same time this gives it alot more points of engagement. And proved it's not the size of the spring but the tension of the spring that makes it better! And why we all go to him with our hope hubs

Pretty much what I expected, the drag from a hub is so insignificant compared to the drag from wind resistance, tyres would make much more difference than a hub.

Love it. Can't say I am as surprised: faster engagement means more pawl surface area, usually. This will always (?) increase drag. Or so it seemed to me. Still, I love this kind of thing and I appreciate all the work to test!

I think you must mean The Stig's trail shredding cousin. Great video, with good info. I bought some Pro 5 hubs in silver, just waiting for DT Swiss FR541 in 28 hole format to become available before I build them up. If you could do a cost conscious build your own wheel video, that would be great. Including for example, which wheel stand represents the best value for money. Thanks anyway for the fun video, new sub.

I would have liked to seen another test where the chain was removed for both wheel combos- this would have taken a look at whether the larger bearings in the hope 5 made the difference. I suspect that the combo of the larger bearings (with more drag) and the new seals (less drag) the net result is basically the same.

Front rotor could be the one dragging (if at all) but it’s a wash at result time. As you mentioned, this isn’t science per say, but scientific enough to apply to average trail riding and if/how long hub drag is affecting wheel rotation. Spend the majority of your time single speeding on trails and this is practical information. You coast and carry speed more and no matter who argues that you’re imagining it, drag is perceptible in this exact manner of coasting.

I have Hope Pro 4/ XM481 on one bike and Hyrday/Trail 270 on another bike... One wheelset is heavier and less drag, less engagement... and the other is the opposite at 1650 g and 690 POE.... I love the test completed here... I wonder if it could have been better or more pronounced if the bike was up to a higher speed for longer.... maybe that's when drag really starts trimming time via summation of high speed revolutions and incremental inputs of drag added up

OK. Stopping to comment at 11:41. Similar distances but one is faster.... The tires (tyres) have a fixed amount of rolling resistance on that surface. The fact that the speeds vary would indicate a faster variable somewhere - if the hub is the only change, that has to be it. So - Hope 5 is faster than Hope 4, BUT that is not more impactful than a tire that rolls with less resistance per surface. I'd like to have seen a test with a tubeless wheel at the same inflation. Good tubeless plus Hope 5 = dangerously fast and sexy sounding.

I appreciate what you did here. However, Im amazed when a sponsor's product doesn't perform, or at least doesn't perform better suddenly the test you performed is under question. "The results weren't what we would have expected ... So here's 10 things wrong with what we did". In actuality I'm sure hope hubs are perfectly good hubs, new version or old. I also suspect that the drag from a quality hub has about zero impact on a typical mountain bike.

The best way to reduce drag in a rear hub (or other moving parts) is to remove all the bearing seals and flush out all the grease. Don't put the seals back on again, just ride it like that. IRL however, unless you have a race mechanic at your disposal who'll rebuild your bike every ride, its nice to have seals and grease in fact I'd rather have well sealed bearings than tiny improvements in rolling resistance that you won't notice as soon as your tyres are dirty, let alone if the wind blows!!!.

Fancy bearings vs regular bearings are less than 1 watt difference when under load. And the fancy ones require more maintenance as that 0.3 watts is gained by having less sealy seals and or lighter lubricants. Impossible to measure outside of a velodrome.

And sorry sram but the xd driver idea is just plain dumb i will be sticking with hg freehub bodies and lastly the alloy freehub body is as strong as firm butter from the fridge go steel or stay home so i will still be using my pro 4 for while longer oh lastly they need to make the drive ring in the hub body replaceable .
