A few years ago I saw a spider. In my apartment. Instead of removing or killing him, I led him stay! He made himself a little spider web in the corner of my living room and was catching mosquitoes all summer! Then in the fall. I noticed he disappeared. Then, the mosquitoes reappeared 😿

I love this. Great points as well. Hope for the best, but expect the worst! Giving them enclosures that offer some depth really helps so much. My girl is a total sweetheart, although that's not the norm. She may always get more cranky. Great stuff, Kat! :)

I saw one of your videos about how once you (Tom) put your OBT in more of an arborial (spelling??) enclosure that it helped a lot with the instant threat they perceive when there is not much space between you and them. I thought that was genius and now I wonder why more collectors don’t try that themselves! I am about to purchase my first tarantula because I just broke up with my fiancé who never let me get one while we were together and I think it will help me focus more of my energy on positive and educational influences with my son and we can learn and enjoy it together. Oh and Kat I love u and ur page so much!! U have a lot of creative videos and it’s good to see Women can do the same things guys do and sometimes even better!! 😉😎 Wish I lived closer because we could be BFF!!

I've noticed mine was more docile in taller enclosures. I think its because when I would open the lid I didnt disturb the webbing. Anytime it was in a more shallow enclosure where i had to disturb some webbing it would threat pose, but never when it was in an enclosure that didnt disturb the webbing. That's also the only time I've gotten the threat pose. So I experimented with two types of enclosures for two if my obts, one with where I could get in and not disturb web, and one were it could web up the top and I would possibly disturb it some. And sure enough the one I dont disturb the web, no threat posture or any signs of being defensive. It might be subjective but I think that's a big reason that so many people have threat responses from them.

I've had mine for a few weeks now, and she's been nothing but shy and sweet 💖 She prefers to hide mostly. If I catch her out in the open she either covers her eyes with her knees or creeps slowly back into her lair. She won't even eat if I'm watching.

Mines still a sling .shy but a great eater. I've noticed if you have enough room from the substrate to the lid of the enclosure that if your not tearing its webbing apart every time you go to feed it will remain pretty chill. Imagine someone open your front door and tearing up your living room everytime they did, you'd be pretty pissed to. It's all about respecting their space. Great video Kat!

You'll be amazed by the Irminias speed and willingness to bolt out of the enclosure. With exception of a few wild caught specimens, I've had far less trouble from old worlds as oppose the P Irminias. Most old worlds I've had have been quicker to hide when approached and take some provocation to get defensive. All the PIrminias are prone to bolt for gaps when the enclosure door opens so don't underestimate them, personally I don't see them as a lead up to old worlds, they have characteristics such as willingness to escape, speed etc that rival any old worlds I've had. It's never happened to me, but apparently they have a severe bite on them also. I'd rather deal with omothymus or poecelotheria types based on past animals I've had any day. 👍

Nice video tk 👍👍👍. Mine I got as a 3/4" sling RCF in October 2019 and it's pushing the 2" plus size now. Rehoused it twice now. First was when I got it home from a 60 dram pill vial to a 32oz deli cup. Last week from the deli cup to a exoterra funarrium small. Love the colors of the red orange on the RCF and the blue on the pads of the legs. Fun to look at when you see them lol. Only time I get a threat posture was during the rehousing. I have been keeping the webbing below the lids so that I'm not disturbing the den and so far so good. Open it up for feeding no problem without any defensive behavior. Hopefully she(🤞) will start exploring the new home as she has been in the hide with just her butt or legs sticking out lol. I would have to say that they are a very shy species that get very defensive when disturbed.

I would really like to have an OBT among other old worlds. The orange Is beautiful but my wife isn’t comfortable with me having old worlds and I respect that. Keep the OBT videos coming and I will live happily, vicariously through you. Plus that just leaves me open to getting ALL of the new worlds. That will keep me plenty busy and sufficiently drain my bank account.

Agreed Kat. The one I had 10 years ago had it’s own little legacy of a journey before it made its way to me. It got out of its enclosure at the store it was being sold at to where the owner told me he had to tear the store apart to recapture it. Then later the owner told me he sold it to a kid at an expo, and the kid brought it back to him some short time after, saying it was too mean. Then I come along, already having two H.macs at home, a cobalt blue, a Vietnam Black, and some poekies, bought this sassy little fireball, not knowing at the time it was the same one the owner told me had escaped in his store. I named him Syracuse after the football team mascot, which was an orange. It did throw up defensive postures, but it didn’t bother me the way it did from my, at the time, Haplopelmas; especially the Vietnam Black. Those are scary spiders. I could handle Syracuse fairly easily. He never tried to bite me during handling. He was skittish as you would expect, and I don’t endorse handling nervous and slightly more venomous spiders like baboons. You just don’t know for sure what kind of day they are having. They are still a fine gateway species to the keeping of old worlds. I found the OBT’s lesser mentioned cousin, the Fort Hall/Dodoma baboon (Pterinochilus lugardi) to be milder, but then again every individual is different.

I got my first ever tarantula a month ago and I got an OBT.. I've always wanted a tarantula so when I went to a reptile show/expo I was planning to bring home one, just wasn't sure what one of my top 3 favs I was going to end up getting. Maybe I a dumb for choosing a OBT as my first, but I felt I could handle it. Especially since It's a sling and I could learn and grow with it. So far so good! She is mainly just shy and doesn't even like me watching her eat. I hope her attitude doesn't change for a long while! I wanted to name her Shelob but I already had a giant house spider I've had for two years with that name. So her name is Ungoliant or might change it to Cydaea. Wanted to name her after something cool~

When I’m in Australia that’s the only T you can buy. Or the funnel web. Or huntsman. Or red backs lol. Not too many options but common sense prevails. It depends on how nervous the keeper is also. Meaning if ur jumpy and all over the place when rehousing this will translate to the spider as all spiders live by feel and vibration. Great recording.

My OBT is so chilled ahe never kicks off at me and noamlly she just stands there if she gets provoked by my self . This could happen from doing her water or feeding her rehousing her etc. She is really not that bad and I have had her for 5 years now.. They are a beautiful tarantula to keep and they are a old world tarantula so you expect them to be a bit if a handful.. ģ. Really enjoyed this video and the cover of one of my favourite types of Tarantulas tbh Also when rehousing them gove then a place to hide and they will go in to that it helps with then running and going crazy when you are rehousing them .. they jsut what to run away and hide what u can understand.

@@bensbugz5574 If they are comfortable they will start webbing almost immediately. It's a good way to judge if they feel safe in their environment. I always give mine a way to go down and hide under something and they have been a pretty chill spider. Just understand that for a new world they are considerably quick. This makes for amazing feedings but stressful rehouses. They can catch feeders out of the air and rarely refuse food if they aren't stressed or in premolt. They do kick hairs pretty readily but only if they feel cornered. They have only struck and threat postured their arch nemesis the evil paint brush.

@@bensbugz5574 Temp isn't a massive issue with Ts. As long as you can wear a t shirt then they should be comfy. GBBs live in a desert so they see some extreme temperature swings throughout their life. Scorching highs in the day to bitter cold in the evenings Also don't worry about humidity. They live in a very dry area. They'll get most of their fluids through food. Just keep an appropriate sized water dish and sprinkle some water on their webbing so they have options. One thing I can say is make sure they have plenty of anchor points. If it is their permanent enclosure at some point you'll be dealing with a blanket of white as they build impressive web castles even as slings.

With my adult female OBT, she only gives me a threat posture if I startle her in the open or if I get too near her burrow to remove food bolus. Usually she just goes deep in the burrow if I even see her at all. As long as I'm gentle, she's a sweetheart about it all. Now the female curly hair I have... I used to have an OBT before I downsized my collection (I moved cross country) and I was a little timid at first. but honestly, unless I caught her out in the open or I was rehousing.. she was fine. Their temperament is awesome.. but quite honestly, I've had NW's that had more sass..

I love obt's so much I have 2. My first one is either dark or brown colour form, he was labelled as a King baboon but is definitely an obt. My new one is a Red colour form. They are named Cheeto & Bunny. Mine are both slings so no defensive behaviour. I feel like they dont deserve their bad reputation. Maybe my opinion will change when my 2 grow lol. I think they just get understandably upset if there webs are disturbed xx

It was a year into keeping for me, thought I could handle it, was fine and chill rehoused it a few times then one day it got too much, it just depends on the individual, with these Ts you should expect the worst can happen, even if it doesn't it's best to be safe than sorry, but after that Asian fawn I am ready

i LOVE obts I have four and theyre so beautiful one of my absolutely favourite species and yep youre completley right theyre basically predictable and that makes them easy to keep and look after. i feel like partve why ppl think theyre so fierce is just their nickname orange bitey thing, like ok they got it bcus theyre defensive but then I think the name makes ppl think they are determined to bite everyone and everything. which ofc theyre not no one should be put off keeping obts I think its silly. tbh I am so done w/ all the "beginner" and "advanced" crap and ppl saying stupid stuff like you have to have years of experience before you even think about getting old worlds etc its just a load of rubbish. ok, probably avoid mad asian arboreals until you are used to dealing w/ tarantulas in general but apart from that ppl should just keep what they want. be respectful of how fast they can be, take sensible precautions when youre rehousing etc and watch vids of experienced ppl to learn good techniques, and be extra careful of ones w/ bad venom. but literally any sensible person who isnt an idiot can easily deal with p much any tarantula theyre only spiders theyre not tigers or crocadiles /rant 😂

I love that video from Exotics Lair when his OBT grabs the blade of grass and won't let go and Exotics says "Ok fine, you have it. I'll go get another one" So funny! 😂🕷️🕸️

Completely agree. I've had numerous OBT's/Baboons in the past and always found them easy to deal with. If you disturb them then yes they are defensive and stand their ground but that's all they'll do. I've found Psalmopoeus much more difficult to work with as they are significantly faster and display actual aggression. Pokies I've found to be quite pleasant mannered to work around and are generally quite timid if disturbed.

Be smart and respect the OBT and you’ll be fine. Totally agree with you.

Madeleine forster I must say i have learned much about spiders from all of you in the hobby. It wouldbe difficult to keep them myself with two playful cats in a small house. They are not as dangerous as a British wasp which are aggressive spiders are not and are really comical in the way they run and their threat postures God bless you all in the hobby

Interesting enough my most "aggressive" tarantula is a male sub-adult B. hamorii. He jumps at his food - or sometimes at the tongs - halfway through his terrarium and gives me a threat-pose whenever i fill up his water dish or try to cut down some plants or stuff like this... I have two OBTs, but they are from early 2023 and are still slings...

I'm not sure if I'm just lucky or particularily gentle and agile, but even my most defensive species have never given me any trouble when rehousing. Omothymus violaceopes, psalmopoeus irminia, heteroscodra maculata, tapinauchenius sanctivicenti... never had one bolt, threat pose or anything. They'd all go gently in their cup, then slowly walk out in the new enclosure. Had plenty of hair kicked at me by my brachypelma auratum though 🙄

I must say. Half a year of keeping before I decided to get my 1st Old World. No - I didn't get an OBT. I went to a breeder whom I got to know before and lets just say he made a remark "Finally someone who doesn't buy an OBT as his first OW" so I figure a lot of people do get them as first... On the other hand I'd rather get an OBT than some OW arboreal atm. I don't feel I'm ready for those yet.

My OBT is actually a sweet heart. She’s really shy and pretty well behaved. I get more threat poses from my e.murinus and t.vagans.

Hmmm. I have 10 new worlds (one a decently feisty brachypelma) and had never really considered an obt to be something I'd enjoy but... This definitely has me rethinking.

When I first got into tarantulas, I seen this and didn’t want it. Then I got a rose hair and a pink toe. Then later on I found out that they were kinda boring. Now I’m getting back into tarantulas, and I’m thinking about getting one of these because they are pretty. And the bad behavior will be more interesting compared to my other ones.
