When I found out that a lot of insects and bugs don't like the smell of peppermint... I just about bought up all of Dr. Bronner's peppermint oil soap. And from Mother's Day till about Thanksgiving that is all that I use. I wash with it my body my hair I even put it in my laundry because there are some days where you think you're not going to be in the garden and next thing you know - you're out in the garden. So I wanna make sure I'm prepared. Now every once in a while I'll look down on my arm and I'll see a mosquito there and I slap it but for the most part I very rarely get mosquito bites!!

Love this show and have watched every episode. I follow several garden shows on KZbin and love your unique format, humor and the chemistry between you two as well as the knowledge. I also follow Roy Diblik from WI. Carex - I have been thinking about replacing the grass with carex because the parkway is not on our irrigation system and we have to remember to water it. I have seen other people in my neighborhood do this as well. It would be fairly inexpensive to replace if dug up by city. Btw Rick you kicked AI’s hiney in the limerick department! You really are a master with rhyming! My 9 yr old even says let’s watch that guy who says those funny puns. And many of them make it into our own conversations. Thank you very mulch!

In Utah, the right-away is called a parking strip. When our city raised the street and installed curb, gutter and sidewalk on our side of the road I had a chance to plant the 4’ wide by 250’ new bed in perennials, bulbs and ornamental grasses. We too get snowplows piling up the area with snow in the winter, but most everything comes back, for 19 years now! It’s beautiful! Now with our drought conditions, the city is paying residents to switch out their turf grass for perennials. I’m also lucky that the major “utilities” running underground are in the parking strip across the street, where my neighbors have given up growing anything because the city keeps digging it up, that side is mainly just covered in gravel.

Thanks for being factual and clearing up these garden center frauds. Two university studies proved the Pelargonium don't work. In fact they noted some mosquitos would actually sit on the foliage for upwards of 10-20 minutes and groom themselves!

Rick, I love my Hose Link but you have to have room pull it out straight from the reel. It doesn’t work as well if you are trying to pull it out from the side.

That looks like a great hose! Do you have the retractable one? Retractable hoses are a gardening game-changer! 😄

@pwcolorchoice Yes, it's retractable with just a little tug. You walk it back to the hose reel, and it winds it up all. I got the 80 foot one with 5/8" hose. I am a disabled gardener (and 64) so this is a game changer for my independence!!!

I have lime Rickey hydrangeas and they are taking over the garden bed. Should I cut back the new stems each year to keep them from shading out the other plants in my garden bed?

You can cut the plant back to shape it if you'd like! You will have to do this every year as the plant will continue to grow until it reaches that mature size. If you're able to transplant it to a location where its mature size would work well, you could do that and replace the old location with a smaller variety as well ☺

My Proven Winners hydrangea leaves are turning yellow with green veining. I believe the plants needs more iron. I've applied Iron Tone twice but I'm still having a problem. Any ideas to help my hydrangea? Second question: How much water does my hydrangea need?
