Do Power Supply Testers Work
I get asked all the time do PSU testers work in troubleshooting problems with power supplies? They work pretty well in telling you the power supply is dead. The LCD versions do give information on voltages from there LCD screens, which can be useful. But over the years, I have found that testing with a known good power supply is more accurate.

Purchase a PSU with a 10 yrs guarantee and if problems appear the manufacturer will send a new one.

A bad power supply can take other electronics with it, so that may not be enough assurance.

Testers with LCD are better and can help you if combined with a PSU splitter like PHANTECS which has enough connections to supply two motherboards from one PSU. In this way tester is connected parallel to mobo and indicates all voltages under real load coditions as mobo 24pin and 8pin (cpu) are supplied from output 1 and teser watch these voltages from output 2. Even more you can connect an osciloscope and measure ripple and "noise" of PSU under real load coditions. But the most important is a stable wall power source (Use of interactive PSU or voltage regulator as in many cases a lot of problems starts from bad quality public grids and services in many countries).

Agreed. The PSU Tester will sometimes reveal that the PG signal has failed but the PSU is otherwise working. Using a known working PSU is just easier. Check the fuse in the plug obviously or use your own good power cable with a 5A fuse. If everything works immediately with no issues then customer has an issue with their own mains power delivery to the PC, so a bad cable/fuse/multi-way socket etc 🙂

Yeah, them power supply testers are OK for testing dead PSU, that's about it.

I did not get it. Does having a PSU in working conditions but that beeps on the PG signal in one of those testers ok? I returned a SF750 beeping under PG with 110ms, but I got a brand new one doing the same thing. Other PSUs won't do that. I'm at a loss. Should I return it again?

I agree, those testers don't load the PSU enough to find tricky issues with power. I'm surprised someone doesn't make one that does.

Just swap out PSU, real easy and best way to test.

The best way to test a power supply is using an multimeter. Swapping the power supply is not the best way because there are situations in which some times the power supply work and sometimes not

Well Brian for my two bobs worth those testers may show voltage but how are you to know if the PSU is capable of supplying the current??

AN TESTER WOULD POWER PSU, NO NEED FOR AN JUMPER. ALSO A LCD ONE WILL TELL IF THERE IS AN OVER VOLTAGES ON A RAIL or UNDER VOLTAGE. IMPORTANT

They sure don't apply loads! The newer ones w/LCD screen have a single tiny wirewound resistor for load. The old clear cover ones that had a row of green LED's at least had 2 much larger wirewounds. (In fact, the one in your video just might be the same type with the 2 bigger wirewounds). One would think someone would make a tester which applies at least a rudimentary load to all buses.

I recall seeing switching power supplies intended for industrial control applications where a minimum load was often specified. Not sure if that applies with computer power supplies and what the test ramifications might be.

I might crack open a tester one of these days and see how hard it would be to tap some load resistors onto it. That would be more useful IMO for troubleshooting a PSU. That said, I do use those LCD testers to check a PSU that is new to me, before I plug it into a good motherboard. An over voltage could ruin your whole day.

You speak the truth! my tester said the PS was good but it wasn't. I thought it was because the tester doesn't put any load on the PS. Don't waste your money on these cheap units.

PSU testers give better results when the PSU is under load as the no load status is of little value. Intermittent faults can be little pH**kers to track down. What many users do is not have a PSU with sufficient over capacity. I work with max load plus 30% which gives sufficient overhead. Like you I module swap with good known units. All the best . J

this is exactly the issue i had with a psu on a pre-built .... my computer would turn off by itself or wouldn't turn on at all ... i changed the power supply and the issue went away .... however, when i tested the bad psu on the tester it passed ... i couldn't believe

4:49 I would add that "if" possible do the bench test with the onboard video by narrowing down your points of failure. If your motherboard capacitors are swollen or busted, then there is a chance you have surged it. It would be a good idea to replace your surge protector when you replace your power supplies. I wouldnt rely on them - the only true test is a load test - a ropey psu with a higher than spec ripple will cause random lockups and or crashes as well as damage if left too long and without the a scope your not going to know - the best bet for most people is do what you do... substitute with a known good

You have to a digit volt meter when the voltage rails are under load . You have to measure the rails under load, otherwise you are wasting your time That's called "load regulation" That power supply switching noise is causing problems with your camera LOL YES a digital volt meter !!!!
