I really related to Lunas struggle, not in the same way as she did, but I used to be very different for the worse. For whom the Sweetie Belle Toils was full of Luna feels, it was Luna helping Sweetie Belle deal with her jealousy toward her sister. Sound familiar? This ep carries on that struggle, only now its more an issue of shouldering too much burden because others have suffered enough due to her actions. What makes this a crown jewel ep for me was beneath the staggeringly good comedy was a heartbreaking tale of self affliction lest she move on and forget Nightmare Moon. Compounded by the fact she may have brought ruin to Equestria again with this Nightmare curse.

I won't lie... I cried at the finale of this episode. That moment where Luna explains what's been going on... Favourite moment of the episode, it just made me really emotional. I think this episode gave Luna some really interesting character depth. Even though I would've liked to see more of it. Part of me kinda wishes it could've been a two-parter. We could've seen more dreams, more jokes and creativity and we would've had more time to focus on Luna's feelings. But as it is, this was one of my favourite episodes of the season so far.

This...episode...was... PURE AWESOMENESS!! I'd say the best episode since "Tanks for the Memories" and the best episode of the whole show yet. I was glued to my TV the whole time it was so exciting. I loved Princess Luna and her being upset about what she's done and Twilight teaching her to forgive herself, the ponies' dreams and even Rainbow admitting she was scared that was so adorable. Not to mention Lyra and Bon Bon being in the same body like that looks a little like CatDog.

I enjoyed Pinkie and Rainbow's dreams the most. Pinkie's because it makes sense her mind would wander and she'd end up in all sorts of places in her dreams. This is a stretch, but I'd imagine she subconsciously fears danger where there is none, given that her imagination can get her into stressful situations before (Party of One she believed her friends hated her). Rainbow's because the sheer saccharine with a dark edge to it, plus Rainbow apparently hates even the tiniest bit of free-form jazz. It also makes sense that Big Mac might want to be a unicorn. Imagine spending your whole life engaged in manual labor then suddenly having an ability where it isn't necessary... you can just think of what you want and it'll get done, and (if you're introverted like Big Mac) you're given new ways to express yourself. That's a huge burden off your shoulders, even if it's one you usually enjoy, and it would give your life completely different meaning.

I was laughing my butt off when Alicorn Big Mac appeared. That stopped as soon as Scootaloo came on screen. I teared up. Twice we've seen Scootaloo in a dream. Both times she's dreamed she could fly. Holy crap, that's depressing.

It was a great episode, in my opinion, Though, I felt that Luna's forgiveness was a bit rushed. I agree with the idea that it should have been an overarching idea throughout the season, something that Luna would gradually overcome. Big Mac was freaking hilarious. No doubt about that. But Rainbow's nightmare? Good lord, may I never see a demonic sunflower ever again...

Luna's always been my second favorite character, behind Spike. I love this episode, it's one of my favorites! I love the raw creativity the animators showcase, and I really liked the concept. I'm always looking forward to any kind of return for Nightmare Moon, almost as much as I keep waiting for Sombra's return, and this did not disappoint me in the slightest. Truth be told, I wish that this episode was in two parts, at least in some way. I kind of wish that the Tantabus had escaped the dream world, and then turned itself into Nightmare Moon. But that's just me. I like seeing Luna finally come to terms with her time as Nightmare Moon, which honestly can't be easy. She spent 1000 years as a bitter, evil, and angry villain who became that way not through her own free will (that's how I see it, and it makes the Elements of Harmony look better). I also like the message of this episode: "You can't take on your personal demons by yourself."

I believe that the episode was a grand and fantastic way of ending the first half of Season 5. Luna really impressed me from the fact that this specific issue is something that I can relate from her. Trying to forgive yourself can be a hard thing to do, and you do tend to punish yourself as a means to re-enforce yourself as to not making the same mistake twice, but in reality, it does much more harm than good, and it takes a special group of friends to allow you to look inside yourself and resolve your own inner demons. Not only was the issue greatly addressed, but the humor and dynamic concepts of the ponies and dragon's dreams were very satisfying and vibrant in of itself. Overall, a solid and relatable episode that runs its course and has fun while doing it. A definite 10/10

However, I slowly start tp accept it, granted it's not what I like to talk about publicly, but I am willing to help others who have gone through what I went through so they don't share the same fate and guilt that I felt and still do feel today.

This is by far my favorite episode. My favorite scene was the entire opening. At first I thought her parasite was the cause of her becoming Nightmare Moon and I found that very interesting, but now I know it was something she created. I also agree with you on having Luna overcome her issue too soon. It would have been best to see her improve over time so we can see her struggles through out the series, instead of pushing the past behind her in one episode. This episode is one of my top favorites of this season, right next to Make new friends but keep Discord.

Sega Stars Also I do wish that Spike could have been on the ball with the issue at hand, instead of acting like the issue at hand was no big deal at first. Spike knows that these girls are the element barers, so ANYTHING that happens that only revolves around them could be related to that, even if his hypothesis was wrong it still would have been a very interesting thought. Spike needs more character points, especially after Princess Spike. He's not getting good character development IMO.

I did think this was a very good moral, especially for older viewers. This is definitely now up there in my favorite episodes and my best personally moving episode. Forgiving yourself can be very hard for a lot of people. I was nearly in tears after watching this episode because I've struggled with punishing myself in the past if I felt I made someone I cared about unhappy or even hurt them in some way or not living up to my own expectations of myself. I've been getting better at stopping myself before I actually take action but I don't talk to my friends very much about it. This episode and your review has reminded me that the lies we tell ourselves and the pain we subject ourselves to as a result of those lies aren't worth it. And many times it takes a friend to tell us the real truth.

Well, the Mane 6 dreams seemed rather direct and obvious about them and was mostly what you'd expect. Pinkie Pie being utterly random, unless she's gorging on sweets. RD being badass, Twi in a Library the would make The Librarian from Discworld jealous. AJ with a prize winning apple. Rarity about fashion. (Though but disappointed all the dresses were just copies of the same one rather then a bunch of different designs.) The only big surprise was Fluttershy, but that does make some sense. Wanting to be pampered and cared for the way she does with her animals. Or just really really wanting to be a 'pet'. Mayhaps somepony shouldn't have told her about Fifty Shades of Hay. Best gag? Either Princess Big mac, or Sir Spike riding on a giant meowing Derpy. And finally Luna. It was simply amazing, glorious and, just a wonderful lesson and look at her character. The depth of her regret over what she had done. How bad she is punishing herself, even when everypony else has forgiven her. My only issue with it, and the ep, is how quickly it was resolved. It was really anti-climatic, and felt rushed for her to just... get over it.. that quickly. But other then that, so damn awesome.

This episode is certainly a great episode and a fitting one as the last episode before the mid-hiatus we're facing. Plus,a Luna episode too which most of us have yearn for a long time now.A lot of cute moments and most certainly filled with a lot of funny moments and now that Big Mac being a princess is canon(dreamscape at least) Peter New can finally joke about him more frequently, not that he isn't doing it already XD Interesting seeing as to how Luna helps other ponies in dealing with their nightmares and give life lessons in the process but in the meanwhile she creates her own nightmare to punish herself on a daily basis. For a reason,I see it as if see haven't talk about her past with the friends that she have and reconciled about her past mistakes just about yet. I would love to see an episode where we can see Luna being more happy and be more active.Be it where she's the center of the episode or not.I understand that she's shown being happy in the end.But still,we haven't seen much of her smiling out of sheer joy. As I have recently uploaded a similar video, I feel that giving my thoughts here isn't quite needed, but I believe that this was one of the season's strongest. I agree that it was highly entertaining and immersed in it's creativity, and I really enjoy those types of episodes for how much they can explore in the weird insanities of everyone in such short time and have it be really funny at that, and the lesson this episode was going for is easy to put yourself in and gives a great angle. Even if it's not nearly as extreme as Luna's, it really helps that, while guilt may be needed to prevent, it is only forgiveness that can boost you and continue your growth, something I find easy to relate to.

Another really brilliant episode. Amending Fences was probably as close as you can get to a perfect slice of life episode, and this was as close as you can get to a perfect blend of adventure and slice of life. It suckers you into thinking that you're going to get a grand adventure with a big baddie, and then wham, it turns out it's a character episode. One of the best elements was seeing everyone's dreams and what it says about them as a character. Rarity and AJ were both focused on their work. But Rarity was focused on the creations, and the creativity behind them, while AJ was focused on the work itself, and the product of that work. Both are hard working, but the key difference is that Rarity is a creator where AJ is a producer. Twilight dreamed of acquiring more knowledge, no surprise there. Pinky's was interesting. The way her mind just bounced from one idea to another, but each was fully formed, full of detail. She's not scatterbrained like she often appears, it's just that she's operating on a much different level. And then her dream was the only one to feature anyone else, showing that even in her dreams, she has a strong connection to the ponies around her. Rainbow's was absolutely perfect. It fit her character to a T. Fluttershy. I have to say I'm kind of surprised that they put this in, because frankly there's a LOT of subtext in this. On the surface, she's a caring pony who devotes herself and her energy and time to taking care of others. That puts her in somewhat of a position of authority. For someone who is naturally not assertive, that can be draining. So the desire to have someone else take care of her, like a pet, is absolutely understandable and realistic. But the interesting thing is that for anyone who is at all familiar with certain subcultures, like the one that is (extremely poorly) depicted in 50 Shades of Grey, it's something that will sound very familiar. Big Mac makes a lot of sense. He's the older brother of a sister who is famous throughout the land, while he barely expresses himself. Wanting to be more makes sense for him, right down to mimicking the transformations she and her friends have gone through when they take on evil. Lyra and Bon Bon - wow. Another image with a ton of subtext. The two of them fused together at their lower bodies. I think we know who the next wedding in Ponyville is going to be for. :D Derpy, I have to admit, this one stumped me. I don't get the imagery of her being a giant, what that could represent to her. I think it was also telling that when they were choosing what to be in the dream world in order to fight, none of them chose either to have the elements, or to switch to their rainbow power forms. Rainbow and AJ chose their comic book form. Maybe that just fit the dream environment better. Maybe they weren't sure if the others would join them. Or maybe they wanted a form where their power was internal instead of external. For Fluttershy, of all the forms she had to choose from, it's interesting that she choose Flutterbat. Of course maybe she was afraid that she wouldn't be able to trigger her Hulk form, since she had to get mad for it to work (at least in the comic world). Maybe she was too shy to let others see her like that. But it's interesting that she chose a form where she wasn't in control. And then there's Spike. I was waiting for him to go full dragon on us, but instead he became a knight, which at least in our world, is the exact opposite of a dragon. Showing he's still not over his dislike of other dragons.

I love this episode it was so deep but really funny at the same time! I believe the animators don't get to decide anything they just do what they're told. There was a lot to do in this episode since they had to setup and resolve this conflict all in one episode, since while Luna's regret and demons have sort of been touched upon they've never really been brought into the light until now. Still I think they did very well with this story and their is a lot of symbolism etc that you can interpret but you can still ignore all that and just enjoy the episode too. I sense I will be making many Focus On videos about this one episode. lol I'm still in shock that supposedly the next episode won't be until October...Sniff "What sort of Analysis can we draw from each of the Mane 6's dreams" Can I back to you on that. lol I'm definitely be doing a video on that at some point, but I have a few other videos / projects I have to do first. But in short it was very enlightening to say the least. "Do you think learning about letting go of your own self created punishments is a worthwhile lesson" Absolutely. In Lunas case their was no need to punish herself and in fact caused even greater problems for the ponies. Everpony was willing to forgive Luna, except for Luna herself. She needed to learn to let go and accept the forgiveness of the others. I think situations like this often do happen in real life where people are just too hard on themselves and in a way need to let themselves be forgiven. Good work as always and congratulations on getting these out so fast! BlueStar

I really like this episode because you learn a lot about all the characters, even the background ponies, and the whole town got together to fight the nightmare. It wasn't just the Mane 6.

I noticed the tune that the flowers in dash's nightmare sang was eerily close to the song barny used to sing at the end of every episode... and I screamed.

Mlp has always been about the strong archetypes for me. This one truly delivered. In the end this monster isn't borne out of her grief but self loathing. And this monster isn't defeated but retreats inside her again. Luna will never be free of her darkness. She will never over come it. But when she accepts it she regains her balance and becomes at peace with her inner darkness. She is no longer tormented and her sub conscious no longer tries to subvert others. Wow. Kid show everyone.

One of the things I very much liked about this episode -- and there was a _lot_ to like about it! -- was the literary reference in the title. Among the themes that Philip K. Dick explored in his book _Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?_ (probably best known through the loosely-based movie adaptation -- _Blade Runner_) there are major sub-plots about self-acceptance, empathy, guilt, shared suffering, and and self-worth ... all concepts which seem to relate quite closely with this episode. One quote in particular seems extremely appropriate to Luna's mental state at the start of the episode: _“My schedule for today lists a six-hour self-accusatory depression.”_ As always, kindly remember: y'all are awesome! Stay awesome.

Great review as always DrWolf! Now I have an off-the-wall question that I would like to have your opinion on about cutie marks. Now we know that a cutie mark appears when one finds what they are destined to do, and the ponies then send their lives cultivating their talent and sharing it with others. Now, what if a pony experiences some form of an accident to the point where they can no longer perform what it was they were doing. For example, a unicorn, who had a special affinity for magic and studying and researching new magics, all of a sudden, due to a experimental accident, loses there horn, or at least there ability to make magic. How do you think somepony like this would be able to cope and move on? I really enjoy your videos and look forward to hearing from you!

I hadn't done any research on when the hiatus would start so when I woke up this morning I got scared and thought it started today. When I actually saw the episode I felt ok with it starting next week.

This is, by far, my favorite episode of Season 5 to date, and it's probably one of my favorite episodes of MLP. For one thing, I LOVE dream episodes, because it allows the writers to get creative with the premise and can do things that can't normally be done in a normal episode, and in a show where the premise is based on magic, the possibilities are endless. As for the story, it really got deep towards the end when we learn that Luna had to learn forgiveness for her past actions, which is actually a very interesting moral and great character development. Overall I enjoyed this episode, and I definitely loved Rainbow Dash's nightmare, I couldn't stop laughing at that scene.

I just gotta say, the climax of this episode was one of the best of the whole series! It was just so exciting and surreal, with fun jokes and cool action that ended with emotional payoff. That is how you do a final battle!

You know can't wait till an episode of celestia comes in coz we haven't really had a personal episode of celestia well maybe one or two but I still want to know all about celestia what amazing power does she have other than raise the sun. And what was that place where celestia took twilight to become a alicorn?
@raw66689 жыл бұрын
Do you think Luna is the only Alicorn to will things into being through dreams/other devices? And even a bigger question, has she actually created things with the power, intentionally and unintentionally? Like could some of the monsters and plants in the Everfree Forest are actual dreams constructs created by Luna during dreams or is that pushing it?

Amusingly, here's what I could interpret from the big dream. - Lyra and Bon-Bon...well, once again, besties. Joined at the hip. - Applejack and Rainbow Dash both dream of being heroes. - Spike dreams of being a chivalrous knight figure. - Scootaloo dreams of stronger wings. - Filthy Rich dreams of putting his money to good use. - Big Macintosh clearly dreams of being something much more. - Rarity...Rarity's bit was just awesome. She amplified her sewing skills to mend the _fabric of reality!_

Regardless of how I feel this episode compares to others in the season, I will always be grateful for this episode because it gave one of the funniest thing in the show's history: RD's dream and nightmare sequence.

Probably the best episode they could end on before the hiatus. I read by someone that the hiatus is so we have enough time to draw fanart for everything that went on here.

At this time in my life I'm struggling with a very similar problem to Luna. I'm constantly thinking of all the stupid mistakes i've done in the past, from the mundane to serious, and i feel i have to punish myself over it. Before it was just mentally berating myself but now it's developed to something worse. I used to keep silent because i didn't want to drag my family and friends into my issues. But once i started opening up about my problems, people were very supportive and helpful. This episode resonated with me a lot and knowing these kind of thoughts infect many others I'm sure it will for them too. That's what i love about season 5, they're tackling bigger issues other cartoons of their demographic would avoid. I think this has to be my favourite episode of this season thus far, maybe even the whole series.

Yay, finally an episode where Luna gets to do something awesome! Happy Happy Happy. I avoided all spoilers once I found out Luna was going be the focus of this episode. And I am so glad I did. I was surprised at just how well executed it was. I laughed so hard at so many points. This is easily one of the best episodes of the series. And Princess Big Mac, totally made me smile, especially with his transformation sequence, which reminded me of sailor moon. And Derpy is still best pony.

I felt that bit with Rainbow Dash fighting the changelings was actually Hasbro's nod towards My Little Portal. Anyways I too enjoyed this episode and it had a very deep moral. Thanks for clarifying the episode better

I would've added a scene where, in the giant shared dream, everyone teamed up together to use Rainbow Power(c) to try and stop the monster... but then have it not work. IMO that would have given more impact to the idea that Luna has to stop giving the creature she created so much control. It would've made the episode better. But, as it stands, I really love it. I'm not a big Luna fan, but this conflict is definitely one that was coming sometime in the future, and it was handled pretty darn well. :)

It's truly impressive to watch this episode and reflect on how often we allow ourselves to succumb to self-fulfilling prophecies. Luna created a physical representation to never let her forget about how she "believes" she doesn't deserve forgiveness for what she's done. As humans, we create other ways to punish ourselves for matters that we need not do so. Sometimes we do it without even realizing it. Your review of this episode is spot on. It was very fun and creative while still ensuring the core message got across.

Totally agree with you Doc, the conflict Luna goes through is VERY relatable for many of us. We're very hard on ourselves when we make mistakes, and tend to not let go of our mistakes, when really, being hard on ourselves for our past mistakes doesn't help anything, it just creates negative energy and makes you unhappy. Gotta let it go and be happy :)

Equestria daily has spoilers on the site. Sunset is returning to home in the last half of season 5. no episode number. all that is shown is the portal in Twilight's castle and sunset stepping out of it and celestia is there. so that picture means no more episode until October. which would put the season 5 finale just the weekend before X-mas. and season 6 is winter/spring of 2016 meaning any where from late January to April. so judging the possibility and the season 5 finale trailer anamatic shown at comic con how do you think sunset shimmer would fit into the finale?

I feel the Tantabus was a very interesting idea, a good portrayal of how someone's emotions can get out of their control. Focusing on negative emotions can dig someone into a bit of a hole, one that can be hard to dig themself out of. It often does take a good friend to remind them about the good in them, even when whatever problem they face hasn't already been overcome. Did this episode scream Persona 4 to anyone else?
@TheRealSparkplugTheFox9 жыл бұрын
I think you forgot to add the part where the tantabas went back into luna insted of vanishing, it shows she still has the guilt and is going to have to work through it insted of it just vanishing (guilt doesn't just go away) this may be the working through the guilt early on you wanted to see but afterwards

In the beginning, I wasn't enjoying the episode very much, but as I kept watching it, it became more interesting. It's amazing how I can relate to princess Luna (the way she feels about her past and the sorrow she puts herself into) because that's pretty much what I do to myself (except the part of giving myself the same nightmare, obviously). Perhaps that's why I loved this episode so much, even though I got a little bit sad watching it.

I loved that episode so much that I did my own review on it. I'm not asking that you should watch it, but feel free to. Anyway, the idea of self-guilt was a good message. My favorite part of the episode was watching Dash's nightmare. I hope we could meet at a convention at some point.
